Very nice video. Yeah, you have to be careful with some people in Liberia. I had to learn this the hard way. With some people, if they find out you have a soft heart, they may take it as an occasion to take advantage. Very sad. It's like you want to do more, but you are very suspicious. I can't understand the concept of biting the hand that feeds you. Especially when you need the support very badly. That guy is definitely wrong. He probably thought by telling you the truth you would probably not hire him. He didn't know you were a soft-hearted individual. I can understand he wanted to make extra money, but he did lie. People just have to be careful when they do business over there. Getting a driving license is $40 over there. Someone told me it cost like 100 or 200 something. I guess someone was trying to take advantage of me again.
He probably, was trying to get a higher salary like most people. If you had agreed to the first salary, may have dropped her for you. That still would be unethical.
He could have just told you the truth, even if it was him just working seasonal until she gets back. I don’t think it’s wrong if he wanted to collect two checks to make extra money while while his Madame is gone because he’s looking for something to do. But he should have told you and allow you to make that decision but he was being greedy and deceitful.
I'm telling you. It has been really rough. People just quit out of the blue. At least in this case I found out the behind the scenes story before I hired him. Because he would have just quit too.

There's nothing wrong with what you did. If I were in your situation, I would have done the same thing. Yes, having two jobs is not an issue, but lying to gain the second job is. He lied to you and Mary. If I had been Mary, I would have fired him for lack of integrity. A large portion of the population lacks integrity. When you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. And everybody who believes you did something wrong is also contributing to the problems in Liberia.
There is nothing wrong with a person having two jobs. Especially, when his boss was out of the country. At least he was trying to keep busy. Most people work 2 or more jobs in the US and employers do not have problems as long as there is no conflict. Which in your case was not going to be a problem, if he was honest with you from the beginning. Might not have even come to this, because I am sure you was looking for a full time driver. Dishonesty is a major issue with Liberians back home. Too much lying, stealing, scamming, etc when opportunities represent itself. Secondly, it was the best thing he did when he spoke his mind over the phone then in person. Be grateful that you are safe, at home and alive. Be careful with our people back home ooo.
