How Howard Stern became a new man

  • Over the past 13 years, Howard Stern helped SiriusXM satellite radio grow from a fledgling experiment into a 33 million-subscriber empire. But Stern, who made a name for himself as a potty-mouthed shock jock, has evolved - as a celebrity interviewer and as a person. He talks with Tracy Smith about his new book of interviews, "Howard Stern Comes Again"; his psychotherapy; a health scare that demonstrated he "wasn't Superman"; and how he and his wife are guardian angels to a thousand rescue cats.

Artie was on dope and self-destructed. Period. Jackie went "on strike" at least a few times, where he would refuse to come into work -- in order to get a raise. Howard warned Jackie (in advance) the last time Jackie's contract negotiations started if Jackie went "on strike" again, Howard was not going to "go to bat for him" with management. I miss Jackie, but he was warned in advance. I do not know the entire Billy West story, but I thought he left the show to move to L.A. and voice cartoons (if that is not the whole story, I'm guessing Billy wanted a raise). If you do not like what Howard has turned into lately, that's fine, just don't be "re-writing history."

Personally, I miss the K Rock days! I’ve been a Stern fan for a very long time (since 1986). The only reason I got satellite radio was to listen to him when he left terrestrial radio. I have since canceled my Sirius subscription. I know everything doesn’t stay the same, but the show didn’t get better, it got worse unfortunately…. In his older age, he became more of a ringmaster than the focal point of the show allowing his interns to entertain the audience with their ridiculous and immature antics … It just doesn’t work for me. The best part of the show during the K Rock days was his rants, fighting the FCC and screaming at the media on air defending all of the controversy he created. I guess he had to grow up at some point.

My theory has always been that Howard goes to therapy so often because he has a debilitating fear of death. He just can't fathom that he's a human being who is going to be worm food sometime in the next few decades, because he's been treated as a God for so many years he's bought into it and has a really unhealthy God complex.

This is probably the best interview he's ever done. People always mistake this guy for the one behind the microphone the same way they typecast actors. Lurch would never be anything other than Lurch in his acting career.

FINALLY! Stern has become interesting and maybe worth listening to. I tried to listen to him years ago and it I felt like I was listening to a bunch of immature 13-year-olds trying to out-do each other. I'm sure those people miss Stern as it was a great platform for them, but the grown-up Stern is far more compelling. I'm late in coming to the Stern party, but I'll give him another chance. I can see that the Peter Pan bois are still alive and well in the Comments section. I expect that they will leave this life not having evolved to know and experience life beyond adolescence.

I remember how disappointed I was when it was announced Howard would be the new judge on "America's Got Talent" (yes, I watch AGT, it's good summer fun). I was then surprised to see how compassionate he was toward contestants...free with constructive & kind criticism, not too sharp with the negative. In other words, nice (& funny).
He quickly became my favorite judge & I was genuinely disappointed when he left. He was an asset to the show & I and my family still miss him when each new season rolls around.
I'm happy for him & his wife that he's doing better these days. And I admire them both for their efforts on behalf of animals. As someone who's always done rescue work, I love them for being a positive force for animals.
    Thank you, Howard. 💙

The Howard Stern Show of the mid-late 1990's was phenomenal. The CZcams clips I've seen of him lately are depressing.
