Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since season three, Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars. But simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they are working towards.

I can’t help but think about Margo’s first interrogator who turned out to be on the right side at the end but didn’t live to see it. Is Ilya really going to try to smuggle Lee’s wife to Mars? Things are starting to get going, let me know what you think.

Seemed like margot was in a pickle she was believed to be Canadian with a phone number to coup backing KGB members. She didn’t tell anything about herself or the woman she met which to me is wild considering she was tortured for hours maybe days. Great episode USSR part is getting wild Mars is always wild wish we’d get more moon time.

Margo's first interrogator was indeed with the hardliners... was it a right side? That's questionable :D But yes, he found a person who had a strange phone number on her and it turns out she is connected somehow to KGB. He had every right to be suspicious. And as a supporter of the coup, he was executed by the colonel after he gave out all useful information. Unlike the first interrogator, the Colonel knew that it wasn't the 3rd Directorate but the 2nd, because the 3rd is connected to military matters and that cover phone used is a part of the 2nd Directorate, counter-intelligence and internal security.
Colonel was a member of OMON (special military police units of the Soviet Army). He wears a black beret, which was worn by Marine Infantry and OMON units, but since he is wearing a black arm patch as well, it clearly makes him a part of the ground forces, not navy, hence OMON. And it makes sense that they were the ones to attack the police units in a situation like this. They were basically the special intelligence units of the armed forces aimed at keeping the internal security should any other branch decide to do stuff like this.
EDIT: His right arm patch, that's GRU, the Main Intelligence Directorate (Главное разведывательное управление - hence GRU). They are basically Army's Foreign intelligence units. They mixed a few insignias there (as GRU I don't think he should be wearing a black beret, but it is possible that some did) and he should not be involved in internal intelligence. The thing he and his soldiers did fits better with OMON units (and Gorbachev DID use them to crack down on early dissidents in the late 1980's and the start of 1990's so it makes sense that they would support him here). In short, a bit of a mix up on the showrunners part. It makes the most sense that he is OMON, but he does wear GRU patch variant on his right arm.
Smuggling goods on spacecraft is already a big no-no due to various restrictions and calculations of orbital mechanics and why every package is screened and specially packed. To smuggle a huge crate like that, out of the question. To smuggle a human. No. Just flat out no. If you forge her identity, give her papers so that she becomes one of the regular passengers, yes. But to smuggle her the usual way - hell no, and I hope they don't even try that way.

@@bethlevine1000 for some people it does but not the same as actual painkillers. That’s the thing about Cannabis, it affects everyone differently, it can’t really be prescribed for anything. You just have to take it an hope for the best. People have all these different strains saying “Oh this one’s good for this or that” when all that’s really different is the levels of THC and CDB. I say CBD is the REAL healing agent. It has no potential for abuse because it doesn’t get you high. In fact it blocks your receptors from THC. So if you TRULY want it for medical purposes and aren’t lying to people or yourself that you really just want to get high then CBD is the way to go. But even then THC doesn’t always even cause euphoria. It’s like Russian roulette. But anyways it’s the cbd that’s supposed to have pain relief properties. It can make your body feel kind of numb. But what it ACTUALLY does really well is anti inflammatory medication. And because it reduces inflammation it can reduce the pain of the affected areas.

The Aleida and Bill scene was the best part of this episode (besides all of the Margo stuff) and a perfect example of character consistency and good writing. These characters are exactly who they were two seasons ago (aka 20 years ago) and their relationship…marked by disagreements, mutual respect, and vulnerability…was on full display. And who didn’t laugh when he said, “At least you didn’t pee your pants,”? A running “joke” that should be as familiar with them as “Hi, Bob” is with Danielle and Ed. Excellent, excellent scene.

What a mess of an episode.
    1) Kelly should be rich enough to fund her science project. She owns a substantial share of Helios shares (from her mother) and it is mentioned that Helios' value is more than the GDP of Texas. The US GDP is more than 10 trillion dollars, as mentioned in the newsreel, and Texas is ~8% of the US GDP. This gives an estimate of Helios's value of around a trillion, give or take. If she owns just 1 % of the shares (remember that just 27 people, including Dev, own more than half of the shares), she is worth 10 billion dollars. Even if Helios were to be worth a mere 100 billion dollars and Kelly is worth 1 billion $. She clearly can fund the Seeker project and still would own a lot of money.
    2) Dev is far, far richer than Kelly but seems not to have any security or entourage gatekeeping access to him.
    3) The Helios takeover was fun to watch but quite unrealistic in its execution
    4) The interrogation scenes of Margo: The substantial sharing of information with Margo is quite unrealistic. The fact that a specific dial code is associated with KGB is ludicrous

I think Miles starting a union thing could still happen. We have 7 more episodes to go. I enjoyed this whole life of crime thing but it can’t be sustainable forever especially with more players in the mix.
Margo’s stuff was great. That’s all to say.
Honestly, watching Dev go off at the. board meeting was oddly satisfying for me. Dev was all about exploration and scientific development in the previous season and it would seem that he fired those who didn’t support his vision from 8 years ago. It could possibly be a good thing for Kelly’s scientific pursuit. That being said, he does now think of the business aspect as well so he won’t be blindsided again so there may be conflict there. We’ll just have to see.
Just going to ignore this whole Ed/Svetlana thing. We already been down the romancing-someone-my-child’s-age road with the Baldwins once. And although I doubt it will play any part, Ed isn’t just her coworker, he is her superior. But pre-season articles did say the relationship would play a part down the road so either she gets hurt or she exposes his tremors.
This is actually my favourite episode this season despite passing of time issue someone mentioned in the comment.

There is a pretty simple reason why he turned to crime... Because of his family. Imagine you took a job to support your family because YOU are supposed to support the family. The job took you far away making communication tedious and the pay is shit. You can't just quit and now your family has to support them selves. You failed. But this side gig can help make more money Right now.

On the Soviet Union story - Gorbachev was both the General Secretary of the Communist party and the President of the Soviet Union, as well as few other high positions (President of the Presidium of the USSR, Chairman of the Supreme Soviet etc.) In the show, they say that the hardliner just got to be the President of the Soviet Union after the agreement has been made. Now, if you know anything about USSR, you should know that the president is more a figurehead. The real power, since the days of Stalin, lies within the General Secretary of the Communist Party. If they stay with the historical organization, hardliners just got the presidency and some other positions, but Gorbachev is still in the government but other positions. I am not sure if they will go that deep or just keep it superficial, hardliners won and that's it. From what they tell us, that should not be the case.
As for KGB, Second Directorate was Internal security and counter-intelligence. Third Directorate was connected to military counter-intelligence... which isn't really what we are being told in the show. Correct on 2nd, but not the 3rd.
Miles story is a bit dumb. Even with the expanded base of Happy Valley, there isn't really a way for that level of smuggling operation. Supplies on the space missions are heavily screened and specially packed. Due to various problems relating to motion, dynamics and balance (I won't go into details) you can't really pack things that are not planned and calculated for. The amount you could possibly smuggle is so low that you could definitely not build a network on it.
Also, the whole speakeasy setup is unbelievable. That base is wired with sensors top to bottom, every section is mapped. For a secret door leading to a speakeasy where dozens of workers go fairly often, which also runs a distillery... I mean, how stupid does everyone have to be? In a base like that, there is no way that it could remain hidden. Or that a smuggling ring like that could remain a secret from the officers on the base.
So far, the most interesting story is the one going on in USSR (but I sense they don't have the skills to make it as complicated and interesting as it deserves/could be - and we might get a superficial version of it). Dev, Kelly and Aleida, could go either way. I don't get it why the worker in the company would be the one of the biggest shareholders though. Ed and Sveta, a bit forced - simply because of the Ed's age. He is 74 at this point in the story, she is in her mid 40's. Both are highly trained professionals. This kind of a relationship is not in character for either of them. But, we will get it either way I guess.
I honestly hope that USSR storyline will bring about something interesting, because, so far, nothing of note or sense is really happening. There is nothing else for me to invest myself in really.

The Second Directorate of the KGB was responsible for counter-intelligence and internal political control. The secret benefactor turning out to be the new head of Roskosmos comes as a surprise. I find it odd that a hardliner coup would succeed in the FOA timeline. I mean, Gorbachev's policies have been going much longer than in OTL and the Soviet citizenry must have been getting used to all the freedoms they've been enjoying. Once Korzhenko (who by his name must be Ukrainian, so interesting detail) starts clamping down on the people, there may be additional turmoil. Or not. Tiananmen Square and many protests in places like Iran show that if an autocratic government is ruthless enough and has enough support from the military and security services, it can violently put down unrest and wait for international outrage to subside before getting on with their business as usual.
Not sure how the USA under Gore will take it, as Gore has just had his "Mission Accomplished" moment of this TL happen by declaring the Cold War over earlier, similar to George W Bush's moment when he declared major combat operations in Iraq over. Also, reflecting on it now, I think the Saudi royal family deposed is the FOA TL's alternative to 9/11 happening in OTL. Without fossil fuels being a big thing and shoveling money to the Saudis, who had family members in turn shovel it to Islamists who had combat experience in Afghanistan against the Soviets in OTL, there is no Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda and a far less influential Islamist movement as a whole. Also, Iraq is presumably still under Saddam Hussein who annexed Kuwait in 1991, but, again, with fossil fuels being less important Saddam is enjoying his conquest far less than he might with oil revenues drying up. The Middle East has likely become a political backwater verging on Third World status with the lack of oil revenues and all the development and projects it allowed in OTL.

@@kicokyaw1039 Soviet political structure is extremely complex and complicated. I don't know what are they going for, but in USSR, president was not a prominent position - more of a figurehead.
In short, while there were no other parties in the USSR's parliamentary system, there were different currents/branches, and they competed for power. Gorbachev could have just given away a portion of the cake to another current in order to prevent a full uprising - which even if he wins, his reputation and legitimacy would be damaged.
That's how it worked in USSR. One branch would push out the other, sometimes slowly, sometimes very fast and completely, with more or less blood involved.
Most of the time, a side that grew in power (building alliances, appoint their men at key positions over the years etc) would at one point revel their cards and find a bureaucratic way to remove the other side, at which point the other side, realizing that they have been outplayed, would make a deal (as to not end up dead after the power shift) and step aside quietly.
The other option was to oppose to the change, in which case those low level conflicts would happen, a few folks would lose their heads and a bit unsteady period would come until everything is reset. When the "rebels" revealed their play, it was usually a done deal, so it made little sense to oppose it - it could only harm you, the party and the international standing of USSR, which is why it rarely happened.
But what did they plan for in the show - I have no idea. If Gorbachev gave the new guy just the presidency and some agency positions in order to appease the hardliners and kept all other positions of (real) power, then he is basically still the man in charge. But I don't think that the show will go that way, it becomes too complex for a western viewer. I think they will just have this as a coup and the new hardliner government takes over completely.

With the new President. We are still not clear on the composition of the government. In USSR, President is not really a prominent role, they were more the public exponents of power. Hardliners have a president now, but we have no idea who holds other, more important offices in USSR (Presidium, General Secretary, Supreme Soviet...), we are just told that Gorbachev made a deal with the hardliners and that the new guy is now a president... that's all. If they made a deal, that means that obviously Gorbachev still hold something (if not, why make a deal?) and we don't really know who holds what.
I can tell you though that the lady who's the head of Soviet space agency at the moment is WITH the new president and hardliner faction. They are advocating for a worse relation between USA and USSR, and now Margo will be forced to work with the people who will go against her own country.

Particularly when you’re in flight or fight, and because he’s been through so much, all of it comes flooding back whenever he does something dangerous. He lost all of his blood tied. And all of his closest friends and THEIR family as well. He has literally sacrificed his entire family aside from Kelly and yes he treated her like his own, she’s still not one of the people he started with. That’s why she’s not enough for him to leave Mars. It sucks but it’s true. Kelly was Ed and Karen’s love child, and that connection died with Karen.

Not sure if the Soviet coup make sence in the show timeline. If economy still booming, there no political turmoil and state geopolitical positions are stable, what the reasons for hardliners to take power by force after ~20 years of Perestroika? Especially prior to elections when they can legally get in power with less bloodshet. Its like if neo-maoist wing of CCP suddenly took power in China during their economy boom in 2000's, it doesnt make much sense!
I really hope the next episode will at least a little elaborate with the build-up to the coup and not left with the remark "thats Russia, lol" 😕

    • @Wustenfuchs109
      @Wustenfuchs109 Před 7 měsíci +1

Its like saying "How come extremely religious coup happened in Iran when economy was doing good?!". Economy is not the only thing people care about in vast majority of the world where ideas still are/were more important than the standard of living. A westerner, growing up in capitalist democracy is not likely to fully understand that. People are more interested in keeping their way of life and societal values, what ever they might be, compared to better living standards.
In the show, the economy was booming in USSR, that's true. But it came at a cost of their idea what a society should be. Wealth gap increased, society moved more towards predatory capitalist policies to capitalize on the whole economic boom - and it is normal that people didn't like that.
Just like how people of Iran didn't really care that much about economic boom because it came together with, in their view, decadent western practices and societal norms. So, an extremely religious coup had popular support. Afghanistan, same story.
If in some alternative universe USA could provide better living standards to a majority of people by going full communist - do you think people will care about their better living standards, or care that the entire societal structure is all of a sudden changing?
Economy, political turmoil and geopolitical situations are not the only or the most important things for the internal political struggle of the nation. Society is built on values - and when those values start changing, you will ALWAYS see a backlash. It is just a question whether someone with actual power will capitalize on that or not and try to revert the changes. And in this show, they did.
It's not that the coup does not make sense, it is just that you live in a society with certain values and to you it does not make sense to see a coup in a country successfully promoting those values. But just because they are your values and you find them good, does not mean they work for every society and everyone's idea of correct values. Don't take this in a wrong way, I am not accusing you or something I am just trying to explain.
That's the shortest way of explaining what a different culture really means. Vast majority of people can't fully grasp the concept - because it is not an easy thing to do. Especially when you are not fully and directly exposed to a different culture.

    • @Ocelot835

@@Wustenfuchs109 For starters fundamentalists didn't came into power in Iran by the miitary coup in amount of few days, there was a whole year of social instability and revolution occurring before, that figures like Khomeini used in their own advantage.
Then, this still doesn’t explain why counter-reformist members of Politburo waited almost 20 YEARS of Perestroika policies before deciding to do something about it. The social changes inside the show USSR did not occur in a matter of few years at that point, the whole generation was already born and raised by the new principles. So what exactly triggered hardliners to overthrow existing government in violating coup now but not earlier? THAT is a question I’m asking.
