    So I've fallen in love with this show! I'm 42 and totally forgot that I read this book in high school and saw the 80's version with my dad. So yesterday my dad calls during my third rewatch, so I tell him about this show that I think he'd like, and we spent the next hour of him telling in very great detail about the book and how he read it for like 6 hours at time during one of his sub deployments. And the fact that he hasn't touched this book since the 1970s, lets me know just how much he enjoyed it, and just how much it meant to him. And it's given us something new to bond over because we both love samurai stuff.

    Great analysis. I research Hatamoto and from wikipedia: The word hatamoto literally means "origin of the flag", with the sense of 'around the flag', it is described in Japanese as 'those who guard the flag' (on the battlefield) and is often translated into English as "bannerman".

    This scene with Buntaro's final buttle made me wonder why such an experienced warrior did quite a stupid move by getting up from the dock and let himself be surrounded by Ishido's men. In that way, surrounded by many swords he just got himself killed quicker than he could be if he would stay in the narrow steps of the dock and killed his enemies one by one. This would have save much more time to Taronaga's escape. Also the moment of farewell: Ishido's men were staying still at the seashore recpectfully in a distance, neither trying either to kill Buntaro, nor to chase Taronaga's boats. My first thought was that the stage director haven't done his/her best in this scene, but than I remembered Mariko's words that her husband is a very brave warrior (above being a clever and wise man.. obviously) 😏

    If you think about it Shogun is very much not only an analogy for engaging in a high stakes form of poker or chess, but it is a representation of how a game of thrones truly occurs with most of the side characters being cannon fodder due to consequences of failure and strict expectations implies in Japanese society. You can also liken the events to the manipulations of the five families in The Godfather and how the Corleone family ultimately settles accounts to come out on top. Effectively most of the characters are akin to soldiers regardless of one’s moral view because you have to remember as an outsider that the protagonist you invest into may seem to be a better choice over the opponent and those who follow, who may be considered horrible, but never forget that the people the author has had you invest in are horrible too. So you cannot expect characters to behave in a manner that complies with contemporary western morals because they do not apply in the same manner. You have to interpret the fact that honor and morality is determined by those who run the game and therefore are fluid. There is no right or wrong. All that matters is how you play the game.

    Why did the portuguese let Toranaga keep Blackthorn at the end of their "boat race"? Once Toranaga switched ships, why wouldnt they have taken him, as per the deal?

    • @ayushman3359
      @ayushman3359 Před 2 měsíci +2

      They didn't agree on taking Blackthorn, they agreed on leaving him behind while hoping the Christian pirates killed Blackthorn which obviously back fired and everything ended up great for Toranaga and Blackthorn.

    It annoyed me that Buntaro (sp?) could have stripped down to his skivvies, and literally swam out to the boats, I guess his armor was more important than his life? It was just going in the trash after he as slaughtered anyway.

      That might take longer than he had. It's probably a more "honorable" death to go down fighting instead of being stabbed in the back while stripping. That's not to say that I wouldn't have given it a shot lol.

    Sad to see your videos get so few views. Have you thought about showing your face in your videos (and thumbnail)? I think doing so would make it apparent to anyone just scrolling through their recommendations that you're not using AI voiceover endemic to 'recap and review' (without actual review) videos from other channels. Right now those low effort channels use very similar thumbnails to yours.

    If you only have your self means life is like a game of chess and there is only you or your opponent. To win is not so much about following the rules, but how you use them. Thus if you only have yourself and nothing else is considered tactile then you will do whatever it takes to win or die trying. He is a high stakes player and will sacrifice anyone if it suits him in order to win the game and become Shogun.
