  • The Sympathizer Season 1 Episode 3 Breakdown. In-depth recap and review for The Sympathizer - S01E03 “Love It or Leave It” with the ending explained. Please Subscribe 👉 czcams.com/users/petepeppers...
In Episode 3, The Captain and Bon stalk and eventually put their plan to eliminate The Dumpling into action. This proves difficult and leaves The Captain with a lot of guilt and triggers a flashback to his time working with Claude while they were still in Vietnam. At the end of the episode all of Robert Downey Jr.'s characters gather in the same place and The Captain gets an offer to work on a movie with a famous filmmaker as his cultural consultant.
The Sympathizer is HBO's new series from co-showrunners Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar based on the novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The Captain (Hoa Xuande) is a Northern Spy working for a South Vietnamese General (Toan Le) at the end of the Vietnam War. Or the American War, depending on who you ask, and this identity crisis and the Captain's double life set the stage for a show that is a spy thriller, a war story, an immigrant story, and a dark comedy.

I have not read the book, but I took the multiple RDJ roles as “Americans all look the same” to The Captain.

All I can say is, when there were scenes in "Orphan Black" where multiple clones were together, I NEVER thought, "Holy crow, look at Tatiana Maslany ACTING." Those were different CHARACTERS, and I totally accepted it.

I was thinking the same! I think that part of why it wasn't distracting was because there was an in-world reason for them to be played by the same actor. AND the story was about them, so they were fully fleshed out characters. Here, we have absolutely no reason why they'd be played by the same actor. They're also all side characters, giving them little to no time for characterization. It gives it a corny and gimmicky feel, despite RDJ being a good actor.

9:20 I think the spoof has more to do with how people from homogenized communities see other races of people.
I think to the Captain all white men look alike. Just like how white people used to say that all Asians look alike.
Plus, I went to an HBCU for 4 years. And when I moved to Atlanta it took me a long time to tell older white women apart. Because I went 4 years without interacting with any.

I think the book definitely had a better handling of the major's death: quick and brutal. The one in the show felt drawn out and kinda dumb.

That is the vibe I was getting as well. The end of the 3rd episode really confused me and thought he was drugged and started having hallucinations. The look the captain was giving the senator during the celebration made me think he knew RDJ was putting on an elaborate show, but knew who he actually was. Finding out RDJ plays multiple characters really throws me off and I am having to rethink a lot of what I've seen so far.

It's the director's joke. In the same way that Westerners sometimes portray Easterners as the same actor playing infinite roles (see the main actor in Shogun. He always plays the same Japanese role in all the films) the director decided to play and reverse the roles by making the white actor be always the same actor for different roles.

Is RDJ playing so many characters (and putting them all together in the same room) a gimmick? Most certainly. Do I absolutely love it? Oh hell yes, but I take your point about it taking away from the story.
