Free weights vs bodyweight for legs, what is better? We can build bigger legs and a stronger lower body with both. Squats can be replaced with pistol squats. Romanian deadlifts can be swapped for nordic curls. Machine leg extensions can also be trained with reverse nordics aka natural leg extensions. If you're at the gym lifting weights or training calisthenics with bodyweight exercises at the park, you can develop muscle with either option. - Sport

Really thanks for everything you do for us â€ïžI am 13years and I am big fan of you â€ïž
I prefer calisthenics but I know you have to use weights eventually I suppose
Bro ur muscles look really good n fit, I m training hard to become like uđ
Thanks ...broke both my knees
Weighted Calisthenics
Absolute game changer
Weighted calisthenics + weights = đ
Yeah lol I do both as both have advantages and disadvantages that can be filled by the other one
Backpack is your friend
@@Hadori-kun lol yes you dont even need a vest
Calisthenics mostly. I feel that the foundation should be laid with calisthenics initially even if you go hybrid or to weights for sheer mass. The foundation of muscular and tendon strength gained from calisthenics is more comprehensive and will lead to greater gains once one switches to a weight dominant routine.
bro what how will you build a better foundation for presing weights by using calisthenics
Exactly funny to me that more people donât talk about this
@@familyguyclips-4026 because it literally has carryover to almost everything , i've seen calisthenics athletes bench impressive without ever really benching
@@vghcfjhkl calisthenics athletes will always struggle when it comes to legs, bench is fine but I doubt you can overload your legs easily with calisthenics, and it doesn't translate well either as the stress pattern is different.
@@vghcfjhkl yeha, because strength is relative. but if that calisthenic athlete were to train with weights, he'd bench more
I prefer weights over calisthenics for legs- but thatâs because I struggle with the mobility aspect of pistols- so thereâs that. đ
Try skater squat or kickstand pistol squat...
Try shrimp squats, lateral lunges, bulgarian split squars
after years of trying to learn a pistol and doing hundreds of lunges my legs finally started growing with barbell squats, romanian deadlifts, front squats, deadlifts etc. Weights are the way to go for lower body
@@salvador97730 then you trained wrongly
@@kevbs4183 nah some people are just not built for the movement. i've been struggling with pistols too but i still do them assisted coz i got no weights around
I do a calisthenics/free weights hybrid with some band work as well. I'm happy with my results and plan to keep training this way for the foreseeable future.
Same
For upperbody i use calisthenics but for my legs i use weights because the calisthenics exercises are too easy for my legs.
I do all 3.
@@nickgear8512 jump Split squats? pistol squats
@@user-cc32vcg811 nah even pistol squats are too easy for me, i play footballâœ(soccerđ) since im little i got strong legs (no flex)
Pistol squats saved my life, I had been weighted squatting unsuccessfully for years with varying bar positions, stances and depth only to experience debilitating lower back pain every time. With pistol squats however my lumbar spine is able to go into flexion without external load in a more natural movement pattern therefore releasing that tightness. I also find keeping my gravity centred I feel it a lot more in my hamstrings further recruiting more of the correct fibres and keeping the unpleasant tension away from my lumbar spine and hip flexors.
How did you get the mobility for pistol squads?
@@Reggie1408 I started by doing pistol Squat negatives very slowly and controlled on an elevated step making sure my center of gravity was over mid foot constantly until my hamstring was resting against my calf and completly relax in this position lengening the spinal erectors too. The step allowes the other leg room on the eccentric motion of the movement. Gradually over time the step becomes less and less and you can progress to a flat surface.
@@georgebanks1814 Thanks for the answer!
You dont use your hamstrings when you do any squat variation. U might be talking about glutes?
Hamstrings realistically barely work during normal squats even got sumo squats they still donât work much
I've got amazing results with bodyweight only leg training using:
- Matrix squat (or quad blasters)
- Nordic curls
- Reverse nordic curls or natural leg extensions
- Leg curls (hanging on a low bar and flexing the knee joint with the feet on the floor)
- Sissy squats
- Hip extensions
Keep increasing volume or intensity and get amazing results!!!
You saw that video, too? It is amazing
yeah

Neither. I'm going for the Johnny Bravo look :D

How did you get to nordics? Do you recommend a certain progression?

To me mountain trail running is the best calisthenics leg workout đ„đš
how often do you do that?
@@johannes01 depending on the season, if it snows it's very hard to run the trails. It is also easy to slip and get hurt.
But normally speaking I run the trails from 3 to 5 times per week.
That is a very natural way to train legs and that's also good to get bulky legs, power, strength and health as well
@@elettrikman20 awesome! Thatâs a great achievement keep it up đ
Top dude! đđ» put west with 5 kg... you will be beast
I wish but living in the city, in a flat country really humbles you.
i like both, but due to the mobility and longevity benefits caused by bodyweight exercises i would prefer them.
Well, I don't go to a gym, so I don't really have a choice. XD
Wtf
Both you get the best results from working all aspects of your muscles
Running (especially uphill and with sprints) and the stationary bike
I do both, all the exercices you mentionned but I only do Pistols squats and I dont use any machine. Got good results
how many pistol squats can you do?
@@johannes01 I weigh 80 kg and I can do 12 reps with my right legs but half with my left.
@@kaizokun8 wow amazing! Make sure to get there with your left leg as well!

me too! are you still doing some weight training?
There are a couple of dumbbells and a kettlebell in my office, that I use from time to time, but mostly bodyweight training

Those Nordic ones might be fun :)
have you tried em out?
Both, however weights seem to produce more gains.
Is this dude Gigguk's voice actor or what?
Omfg I canât unhear it now
I think doing a combination of both is ideal, weighted calisthenics are arguably the best exercise
No argument here!
No arguement here either.
wow learned some new workouts today!
have you tried some of them?
I like to mix them up but when i do calesthenic movements for legs, i love to do Pistols and explosive jumpin squats and a couple of minutes of jump rope (all in high reps sets) but, those nordic movements looks kinda lit bro imma give it a try đ
A nice mix of both personaly
The Nordic quad ones absolutely snap up my ankles
Mixture of both. Tag squats, single leg elevated heel squats
Calesthenics only, more then big muscles, I want strength to feel light, to feel how easy it is to move my body freely.
I use pistol, sissy and 90° leg position for all pull exercises.
Both blended together is great
Gym for legs.
You cant do progressive overload using ur bodyweight, unless its weighted calisthenics which i prefer to train the rest of the body
You ever tried a pistol squat?
@@caleb7882 Have you tried squatting a barbell and progressively overloading to see actual gains in strength?
@@theaccordian9377 My point was that there are hard enough calisthenics leg exercises that you donât need weights but if you like weights better than thatâs cool too
@@caleb7882 pistol squats is like doing regular push ups, there is no challenge. Therefore barbell squats are the best
@@viktorjonsson26 either you are god or that's bullshit. Video please? Pistol squats easy? I cry everytime I attempt one (and I've been training for 3 years)

I need more of these comparisons. I find it easier to guess which muscles are targeted with the gym exercises but I like bodyweight exercises.
I have always been a weights trainee focused on barbell compound movements but I am starting work on callisthenics with a PT this month. Super excited
Can you do those RDLs again, I wasnt watching
Weighted pistol squat + deadlift đ„
This is precisely what I needed. Subbed!
Blend of both, love my RDLs pistols barbell squats, nordics etc.. love em all
Great concise video!
This 3 calesthenics leg exercises are literally the only ones I do
I like a mixture of both but weighted calisthenics is my favorite
Nothing wrong with doing both I'd say. If it's a beautiful day, I'm going outside to do body weight focused routines. Cold/ rainy day or I'm feeling the need to move something heavy, I'll head to the gym. Really think it depends on the person.
great summary of all the important leg exercises!
Cheers colleagues, love your work.
@@FitnessFAQs thanks, we're fans of your work as well!
Never tried that arm positioning with a pistol squat before. It works well for me. Thanks for this.
Nice info, I think I will do both now. Thanks.
Both my man! I started stretching, both dynamic and static to be more flexible for the neat calisthenics exercises
can you give some calisthenic exercise examples?
@@johannes01 as with weightlifting as with calisthenics, I stick to the basic stuff. Claisthenics are push-ups, raised push-ups, pull-ups, negative rowing, dips. Nothing too fancy because I am way to stiff. But I train for a planche, front lever, hand stand push ups and human flag.
@@bastipear2864 awesome! Can you already hold the handstand?

Both for enjoying the grind because monotony gets to me quickly.
Tend to use both, like the variety but generally stick to a core of basic exercises
It would be nice if you made a video about chest expanders a must have for home gym
Both are needed
For me 100% free weights, Iâve completely fell in love with building strength. Iâm so close to a 2 plate bench and I already know itâs gonna be so hype when I hit it
This is genuinely a good source of info. Also I got my legs via calisthenics, wrestling drills, and sumo wrestling drills. I genuinely have more development on the sides of my thighs than the front and back due to this. Probably need to balance it out by finally doing weighted squats. Might also stop an issue I've been having recently where my left leg will just wobble out from under me in sumo matches. Like I'll be doing good, have me opponent in prime position to throw, and then right before the throw my leg will just give out sometimes. Like from my perspective it literally feels like I lost my leg for a second because there is no sensation and I'm suddenly falling.
Bro my hammys ran off screaming just watching that
doms for days.
Good stuff
Nordic curls are also best if youâre training functionally. Specifically for speed or jumping.
Thanks a million brođ
all good bro
When will be longer videos?
yes he has to make more long form stuff
I'm definitely going to try those out, working out from home means body weight exercises are always welcome
Any chance you could do a form cue video for RDLs?
New sub. Recently found out about nordic curls and realized the potential with weighted calisthenics. Combined with mobility and martial arts, I think you can achieve unreal feats.
Welcome to the FitnessFAQs family.
I am looking at doing a lot more calisthenics to have some fun but when it comes to my rugby I canât beat squats and power cleans as my core movements for legs!
Real good video here,
Good for teaching.
Thank you for sharing Yr video here,

Choose both! Weights hit hypertrophy the easiest and machines are great as well.
Both is good, I switch it up every few months so I don't get bored
Both. Using calisthenics (I especially like using ring exercises) and weights are a fantastic combination.
plan to do hybrid. start my workouts with calisthenics/compounds and then use free weights or machines when I fail to do reps with my body weight
hybrid is epic.
Bulgarian split squats. Weighted or weightless, you can absolutely blast your quads. Oh and also sled work.
That single leg squat is hard as hell to do. Props to him
I do both first the heavy compound barbell movements then the calisthenics and isolation to finish.
Weights are superior for a very simple reason: they are adjustable and therefore offer flexibility that is extremely benefitial for beginners or for people after an injury, and later on provide a way to continuously improve
Both ,get use to both !đȘđ»
I'm currently just trying to get fit so I mostly use weights but I do love calisthenics and plan on picking up a pull up bar and some gym rings and starting to train.
I build up the legs with pistol squats (so far with a low box to sit on at the lowest point but I'm getting really close to full unassisted ones), nordic hamstring curls, squat jumps, single leg calf raises, and jump lunges. Can't complain about the progress so far!
Buena explicaciĂłn y entrenamientos đȘ
I prefer weights but recently I started getting into calisthenics and Iâm really thankful for your guidance
I am in awe đŻ
Those pistol squats look fucking brutal
I remember first seeing this dude do variations of pull-ups. I was dumbfounded đ.
My knees are screaming seeing this
Both: Barbell-Squat (not replaceable) and Pistols
Best of both worlds.
r.i.p knee
Great video. I'll be doing all of these. And to answer your question, I like both.
Out of these I do barbell backsquat (because I can't do unassisted full rom pistols), nordic curls more than rdl/deadlift and reverse nordics (pretty much never machine leg extension). The reason I don't deadlift much is because I want to prioritize my grip for oac and weighted chin/pull up.
Can there be weighted variations of the calisthenics routine?
A mixture of both I would say
I think they both have their individual benefits but speaking for myself I would start with calisthenics first then add the gym weights for an extra challenge and more definition to the muscles.
Christ almost landed inside his sheriffs badge then
When you first introduced us the lateral step ups. That was like a game changer for me. It was like a pistol squat alternative with assisted range of motion. But because I wasn't able to wear my casual pants however I don't have nothing to wear but my cargo pants that isđđđ. Great content as always.
It depends, but I like a healthy mix of free weights, machines and calisthenics. Each of these different training types have their own benefits and drawbacks, and when using the proper exercises in the proper place is most optimal for growth.
Pistol squats have me on the floor crying
I like both, gym helps you grow bigger while calisthenics in my opinion is great option to build your strenght
Pistol squats are really hard and i like them but they create to much pressure on your knee which isnt good
Definitely need to make sure the knee is sufficiently strong before doing them
BOTH
Weights all day, but these are great alternatives to incorporate đđŸ
Combination of both.
Do an episode with Ben Patrick, the knees over toes guy.
For maximum results, squats and deadlifts are necessary
I prefer obviously Calisthenics. I love it because it rarely needs any Weights (dumbells). Means, we can do Calisthenics Exercies even at home without going to the gym as it also produces great strength in the body which is shown by the Calisthenics athletes in the public and they make the them crazy by doing some crazy exercises like Full Planche, Dead-Man Pushups, 90 degree holds and many more other as well.
RDL don't work the short head of the hamstrings, nordic curls do since it is only contracted with knee flexion. Combining them is the definitive hammies routine.
Weights. Because I have very bad mobility and a limited range of motion due to bad posture and knee problems. Using free weights + the cable machine has really improved my physique.
Both...I like to mix it up.
