    Synopsis:
    Back-to-school season is apparently also back-to-charging season because we’ve seen a real uptick in EV charging brands reaching out to our channel. Over the next few weeks (maybe months?!) we’ll be sprinkling in various installation & review videos to hopefully educate consumers regarding the 3rd party market. Check out our EV Charging playlist to see if any of the brands show up on your wish list.
    AutoBot peaked our interest for a few reasons: 1) The brand name is not a string of random capitalized letters on Amazon, 2) Customer support is well-reviewed, 3) the unit advertised over-the-air updates, 4) low price @ $300, 5) a non-app version is available, and 6) the unit advertises a full 48-amp charging rate. For those looking for a cheap, simple, reliable charging option without your phone, we think this could be a great option for you.
    Installation was straightforward and the components seem to be quality. We'll keep you posted if anything goes awry! Laced within the technical instruction are recommendations and points of professionalism employed daily by Jefferson Electric masters, journeymen, & apprentices.

    Without getting a really expensive service upgrade (would require upgrading underground utility feeds), many of us will not have sufficient capacity for a 60A breaker in our main panel, based on NEC load calculations. I think in many cases, the actual calculated maximum load will never happen, yet to pass inspection, any new load like an EV charger, will either need to fit within the maximum calculated load or the EV charger load needs to be disabled under high overall load conditions. I see a possible solution are load management devices, like the PSP Products SAK-60MS, that should allow a high capacity EV charger install. This device basically senses the total load on the house with current coils on the main panel line side, and if it's approaching the panel limit, it cuts off the EV charger. Have you used this or other devices?

    Hey, Mr.Walsman. Love the channel and I've been watching for a little while now. I can't help but notice towards the end of the video. We can see the Model 3 showing 12kW at 48A and 242V but the car never took a charge. Did your Model 3 ever end up taking a charge?

      Just a curiosity, how does altitude affect charging? For example, my brother lives at an altitude of ~9200 feet or ~2800 meters, would the AutoBot charger not work there? Is a different charger required for altitudes higher than 2000 meters?

    Did I miss were you put the lock nut on the conduit into the EVSE? (I didn't see it there at the end.)

    Glad my panel was in my garage. Only needed 40 feet of wire and conduit to run a line to the front of the garage to install a 50 amp 14-50 nema plug. Cost was $700 plus the cost of the EV charger.

    Love your videos. My question, why use a charger that needs an adapter to charge your Model 3. I could understand if you had an electric car that used a non-Tesla cable and was switching to a Tesla, but not the other way around. I've had a 2018 Model S for 5 years that I've charged with a NEMA 14-30 that was already installed in my garage 3 ft. from the car's charge port.

    I have a 50 sub panel in garage that has a NEMA 14-50 receptacle off it. But it not close enough to where I want to run charger and I want charger on the outside so really need to hardwire it. Also kind of hate to lose the NEMA socket. Is there a way to hardwire charger down stream of the socket on same circuit? I promise to never use both at same time. Or is there a charger with really long NEMA plug leads? Or should I just use hardwire version of charger and make my own long plug lead? TIA

    I'm sorry but over the air updates mean it gets bricked to the point where they can't update it. Or they don't want to.

      Wall connectors are hands-down the best option out there if you don’t need load management. Can’t wait until the Universal options are available - that’ll be basically all I install.

    Weird. Why not just use a Tesla charger and charge by VIN? So much simpler.

    • @JerseyTom
      @JerseyTom Před 8 měsíci

      The Tesla wall charger unfortunately doesn't (currently) support reporting usage back to the utility which most require for discounted EV charging rates. The Gen 3 chargers might be upgraded to be able to someday, but not for now.
