Trying to Fix EVERY PlayStation ever! PS1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 - I bought a PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5 to see if I could fix them all. I found disc drive issues, a no power problem, HDMI port damage, and, of course, found plenty to clean. This is my first time attempting repairs on a PlayStation 1 or 2 so I hope you enjoy it.

This was really fun to see all of the different consoles! I took apart my husband's old PS1 a few weeks ago and did a deep clean on it - it's the exact one you worked on and it was super satisfying to see how pristine it looked after all of the dirt and dust was cleaned out of it. It also worked perfectly when I tested it! Would you consider making a video on how to use multimeters? I bought one not too long ago, but I would love to see a guide on the different settings and how to test different components on a motherboard. I have figured out how to test batteries with it but that is about it 😁.

Regarding capacitors, voltage rating is how much it CAN handle, so you want it to be equal to or greater than the original spec. In terms of the uF (capacitance), that is generally something you want to match, as this is what actually affects the circuit's behavior. So, in the PS2 power supply, it might be OK to bump it up, but I wouldn't do that by default on another given circuit unless you know what you are doing or someone else has already figured it out, as in this case.
Hope this helps anyone out there recapping their electronics!

I’ve refurbished a couple of PS1 consoles in the past, I also had to do research about faulty laser units. There were several common faults with these where the guide rails and cogs would need cleaning and regreasing and/or the motor would need replacing, I’ve had to do this on one laser module and another fault is where either the resistor would need to be adjusted so the discs could be read again or the laser itself would need replacing, hope this helps!

While replacing capacitors with a higher rated voltage is fine, a different capacitance may not be a good idea as it will change how that circuit works. In this case it might be fine though. You should get an ESR meter to check for bad capacitors as your meter might read the right value but its ESR might be too high.

Spend about an hour trying to heat it back up, using wick to remove, re-solder, and trying to make sure none of the pins were soldered together. It eventually worked. Ahh.. memories. 😂

When you have a lot of hair and dust bunnies, I like to use some adhesive tape like the kind they use for masking off for painting and make a loop with it about the diameter of a tennis ball to use as a sticky lint and hair picker-upper.
You know, sort of like one of those cat hair and lint rollers but much cheaper as a one inch wide roll of the painter's adhesive tape is cheaper in a bulk roll.
I use the manila colored kind.
I do wonder why you don't use a smaller shopvac with one of those smaller ends with a brush on it to suck up all that dust.
I would be more efficient and keep the dust out of the air.
You could even buy smaller tubing and attach it to the main vacuum's hose with adhesive tape to get into smaller areas.
    Great Show!

The PS5 Dualsense controller does in fact work on a PS3 I actually just used my own Dualsense on my phat backwards compatible PS3 yesterday. What you have to do is hold down the PS button and create button at the same time to put the Dualsense in pairing mode and then go to the PS3 go to settings accessories and Bluetooth devices and then scan for new devices. Your PS5 controller should show up as a human input device. Click that and from there you should be good and your Dualsense should be connected to the PS3. Please note that on the Dualsense controller you will not be able to use the PS button as it will not be recognized by the PS3. For this function you will need a PS3 controller standing by to access your in-game dashboard menu.

On the PS1 this was a common issue. The black plastic breaking off of the spindle and laser issues. I never had issues playing games with the broken plastic on the spindles. I did have issues with skipping and turning the PS1 upside would let you play without issue for some odd reason. The one I had issues with skipping, I replaced the whole laser assembly from a PS1 with a bad mother board.

Great video! It’s interesting that a PS5 controller did not work with your PS3 cause it works with mine without a problem, doesn’t work with all games though.

That model of the ps1 was quite famous for the spindles breaking, all started with the small black parts breaking off it

What do you enjoy the most during and after a repair? Repairing something you know and feeling in control or repairing something new and having the new adventure but greater risk of complete failure?
