      They are insanely greedy, they offer just one year of service here in EU and if it has the most minor problem they ask you 300 euro to get a refurbished console. I couldn't fix mine due to the GPU being faulty and Sony not offering any replacement parts. I got the refurbished console i am selling it and never getting a PS5 again until they change their stance goodbye Sony.

      I'd say it's something less sinister than that. I reckon it was likely too time consuming for them to complete the repair for what it was. They likely have a process of repair time vs the severity of the damage. They also likely have a contracted company doing the repairs.

    A legitimate reason for why they deemed this un-fixable is the lack of an IPC certified employee. At my job I’m currently in the repair department and I get several boards with torn pads get thrown out because of torn pads. While my coworkers and would love to fix them, the company can get a pretty fine if we get caught doing certain techniques that we are certified to do. While it could be that they just wanted to make a quick buck and sell the guy a new console, there is a chance that their repair dept. would’ve really wanted to fix it but just is not allowed too. We’ve been trying to get sent off for training to get certified for a year now, but the company doesn’t think it’s worth it to send us away for two weeks while spending thousands of dollars on the class and even more for housing and food.

    As someone who works in the commercial repair industry I get why sony deemed it "un repairable" but to me this speaks volumes on why marrying the disc drive to the mobo is a terrible idea. If they didnt marry it this would have been an easy swap for their repair team.

    I worked for Sony a long time ago, and never in the repair dept, but I'm pretty sure a customer would expect some kind of short guarantee on a repair carried out by a Sony repair base. No major electronics manufacturer is going to give a guarantee on a torn pad repair, that's why Sony have deemed it unrepairable even though a DIY'er can probably repair it...Steve himself has done repairs that "he wouldn't sell" for the same reason, to protect his brand and reputation...

  • @connorcrenshaw2967

    Solid fix, disappointed Sony did not at least offered to swap the drive for a fee instead of deeming this e-waste. I would have checked that the motor mounting screws on the gear train were tight. They looked a bit loose in the video, you might not have even needed a new motor.

    • @F3N01
      @F3N01 Před rokem +61

      As stated in the comment above, Sony pairs all of the parts of a PS5 together. If you swap out the disk drive, it wont work as it'll not recognise it as it doesn't have the serial code or something. Basically Sony made it that if there's a big enough difficulty to the point of soldering being needed, it's e-waste.

    • @mehmetmetinbaki
      @mehmetmetinbaki Před rokem +140

      @@F3N01 be that as it may, but still Sony is capable of pairing new drive to existing motherboard or coding old drive's serial number to a new blank drive, but because selling an entire unit is more profitable than repairing broken ones they just refuse to do it. I am wondering why Sony would decline such a simple repair, but based on the comments…it makes some sense. If Sony is having retention issues with qualified repair technicians, it makes sense. Not a lot of people like doing the soldering required (I found this out first hand with my Xbox). I do feel that it is very inefficient to marry the board on the optical drive either system board, creates more problems for the company that could have repaired, rather than replace (if it was still under warranty). There are a lot of things that one company will deem unfixable that can be fixed, but it requires two things most companies lack today…time and skill. Great to see that you were able to get it working again.
    So I mentioned an Xbox in the comments above. Since it was out of warranty, I chose a local repair shop to fix it. The sign in the window said, “we fix game consoles”, so I believed they could. Had my machine for a month, tried to charge me more for the repair than it cost for a new one, complained about having to solder (their outside repair expert was having trouble doing it), returned the machine to me with stickers & permanent marker writing on it (had to scrub it off with a Mister Clean magic eraser), and scratched the heck out of the case. I paid $100 for the 30 day repair.
    I used it once and it broke again (the drive didn’t even sound right. Lots of whirring). I ordered a replacement and did the repair myself (after watching one of your videos) in 15 minutes. The soldering wasn’t pretty, but was better than what they did and was functional. I got another year out of that repair and then I ran into an issue securing quality parts (because the series s/x were in development), so I purchased a new Xbox One and still have it. Will probably replace this year with a Series X machine.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Sony probably didn't want to fix it as the problems with the drive was customer caused and not a failing of the hardware on it's own. Still even If they didn't want to fix it you'd think that they would have offered the customer the option of installing another functioning drive???🤔

    I think Sony deemed it "unrepairable" due to the fact that the service/repair depot operates like an assembly line to only swap components for high volume repairability service. Most OEM warranty service depots, I believe, do this to save labor costs. E.g. One certified technician can can have a backlog of 20 consoles to swap parts then bench test multiple consoles. Since swapping components is much quicker. If they took time to do soldering on one unit and testing and ABA cross-checking, there would be a backlog of console awaiting swapping parts and testing. I think service depots find the most efficient (leanest) means of repairs with quick turn around, which in this case is quick parts swappage and then testing in volume per bench to be the most lean and cost effect and driven, resource-wise.

      Probably was already tampered with to remove cookie(s) out. Which ever circumstances are the drive was deemed unrepairable, it was a accidental/mistreated n warranty won’t help you there. The motherboard and drive are a linked/married couple that you can’t get rid of one without the other, disc version. When I wanted the register my 1st gen ps5 it wouldn’t let me input model #, had me goin there so reading around I found there’s a given 1-2 year warranty EU/USA plus 90 day extension, but policy they have states somewhere for mistreated/negligence gets a warranty void.

For consoles, the hardware is married to keep people from messing with said hardware and potentially causing security problems for the console manufacturer. Xbox One does it. PS4 does it. PS5 and Series X do it. Keeps you from being able to jack in any disc drive you want, which as stated before can cause security issues for Sony and Microsoft console systems.
