I was a member of the Morris Brown College band and drumline. That was our real drumline and band in the movie. If you need any clips made I’ll be happy to assist
Yes that would be amazing! Hit us up at info@apexpercussion.com We would seriously appreciate anything you can send!
Jahleel Eli wrote this.
@@bobbyjimmi392 Brother Eli was my percussion instructor my freshman year at Morris Brown
That’s freagin awesome
@@RomeBKnowing8199 Yessir. I talk to him regularly. He's been an awesome teacher since I met him. His vision is overlooked in Memphis. He's a stellar person and musician.
Thanks for doing this! The band and Drumline will be back soon!
Dr. Kevin James

Morris Brown College
Hey! Thanks so much for checking it out! If this is the real Dr. James, we would love to hear from you or your office. We’re obviously big fans of the school and your fine arts program! We’d love the opportunity to connect if you wanted to reach out at info@apexpercussion.com !
Wow major props !!!!
Can't wait cause HBCUs miss yall 💯✊🏾
@@ApexPercussion Hey there! Great cover of the cadence! The title of this piece is “X-Factor” written by Jahleel Eli, a great friend and teacher of mine. Basically family. He actually served as the percussion director at the university and these are his students. I honestly think he and his approach to writing/arranging and playing played a huge part in the “M.E.A.C. movement” (this unit/piece served as a predecessor to drum lines like Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T, and others). Gonna share this with him. I know he’ll be thrilled. He doesn’t get the props due to him for this composition in Memphis, unfortunately.
@@RobBridgeforth Wow!! That's incredible!! We'd love to chat with him honestly, this is such a cool cadence!
O.k. Jake & Apex Percussion, this is Jahleel Eli: the writer & Principled Instructor of "X-Factor" as played by my young brothers & former students from Morris Brown (much love & respect to Morris Brown FOREVER). Thanks for commenting on the rhythmic structure & nuances of my cadence. I am a working class brother who currently resides in Memphis & currently musically inactive in this city. Writing that cadence & having those young men from Morris Brown play it in the film was & is surreal. Be mindful that the snare stickings are not traditional right to left combinations as taught in regular marching snare teachings. Certain parts of the cadence were influenced by former University Of Memphis Percussion Instructor Mike McCray, who had a major impact on my snare development & my Percussion Mentor Professor Ricky Burkhead (University Of Mississippi) who helped me with developing a total percussion perspective. My former high school band director Paul Hill was primarily influential in my musical development, & Former Morris Brown Band Director Dr. Eddie Ellis opened the door for me to teach, which was the catalyst for the cadence being born. I hope to be able to do a thorough breakdown of the snare stickings at some point once I can get past the many financial obstacles presented in Memphis. Thanks for acknowledging that I wrote a quality marching percussion piece. Excellent breakdown on your part. 👍👍👍
Brother Eli!
Holy S#$% this is so cool! Thanks for checking this video out! We had so much fun breaking down your music, it's such a badass cadence!!
@@Tre4Sho1914 ,what's up Young Brother? Thank you & others for keeping my work alive. 👍👍👍🌟🌟
@@ApexPercussion THANK YOU for the credit & acknowledgement. Contact me at: jedrumstick@gmail.com if you wish to see the ORIGINAL hand-written cadence as it was written back in 1999.
Man 1. I hate that they cheated you in this movie 😂
2. Dope cadence bro.
Jake & Chris of Apex Percussion, this is Jahleel Eli: "X-Factor" writer & former percussion instructor at Morris Brown College. I sent the original hand-written chart of the snare part (59 measures as it was written in 1999) as well as a new hand-written re-transcription of the snare part as Morris Brown actually played it in the film (39 measures) which has all of the accurate stickings. Both transcriptions were sent to your email inbox as you provided. It is important to display my hand-written versions to make sure that accuracy & authenticity are emphasized.
Thank you all for shining a spotlight on our work in the movie. 🌟🌟🌟

moving to jakes pad absolutely TOOK ME OUT!
This head me dead. Lol I could not contain it.
When Chris jumped out of the chair and played on the Jake cam, I was blown away hahaha. Didn’t expect that!
If there was a love button, I would’ve clicked it at that moment!
Chris mad respect for wearing a powerline shirt
and mad respect for those that know who powerline is
A goofy movie is highly underrated
This was the first thing I said!! “Love that shirt!!”
Stealing Jake’s drum and then the face afterwards hahahaha. I loved that so much.
This is the best cadence in the movie honestly. Great work.
That 1 dislike on the video is the guy who didn't get his sticks out on time.
Jake, your editing skills are amazing. Jake cam is well deserved.
My editing skills are getting there for sure 😅 still learning, but I’m getting better as I make mistakes and try to fix them in the next video always
totally agree i was thinking same thing, great editing
This cadence is called X-Factor and is being performed in the movie by the Morris Brown Drumline. What they are saying on the 8th count of the tap-off is "X". Great job on the video. Awesome as always
Ohhhhhh nice, thank you for this 🙏🏼
@@ApexPercussion no problem
I thought he said “break it” 😂
I thought it said bring x
I’m not a percussionist, but I watch all your videos. Amazing entertainment factor. The editing in this video is absolutely sick. WHITE BOY GOT RHYTHM!! Keep up the great vids. You introduced me to the world of competitive drumming by showing the Blue Devil breakdown.
Yo that’s so awesome to hear, thank you for sharing that! I hope we can keep putting stuff out you’ll enjoy!
The get up to the other drum 🔥🔥🔥
4am... kinda sleepy... here's to the next 20 minutes
When you pushed Jake outta the way to play on his pad, I LOL'D! 🤣 This was amazing! And yes, MB absolutely won. A&T was a combo of actors & High School drummers I believe from Southwest Dekalb in Atlanta. I read this from someone's comment who was an extra in the movie.
Oh nice!! 😂 yeah that seems hardly fair with the age difference
POWERLINE SHIRT IS 🔥🔥🔥
YUH! 🙏🏼
Who else gets way too excited for these?
Edit: Who skips the video to watch the end? It's worth the journey.
That was gr8 loosing you stick and then going to another drum pad and then freesstyling the camera to get the last bars out... RAW LIVE AND UNCUT LOVE IT!!!
I didn't know what people were talking about at first, but the Jake Cam spotlight in the end was IT!!! 😂😂😂
I love that you’re wearing a Powerline shirt!!!
Goofy Movie for life 🙏🏼
Quads absolutely killed it and we’re definitely under appreciated in this round
Yo for real tho, that extended quad break was legit
I would like to see a video explaining the basics of the drumming such as what the diddle and the other things that you do are.
That sounds like a great idea. In the mean time if you don’t know a diddle is basically 2 hits with the same hand
You guys are simply amazing.... I have ZERO percussion skills and I have watched all of your Drumline videos in pure amazement. Thank you so much for doing these!
Thanks Nathan! 🙏 We hope to keep them coming!!
They said "BREAK" 8 5:27 at intro to cadence..like a war cry,so awesome 🥂✨
“Rated x”
That was amazing as always guys! Good way to start the morning too. Especially loved the “Jake Shove” there to get to his drum pad lol
I need that T-shirt!!!! A Goofy movie for the win!
Dangggg the editing is Killer in this one !!! Can't wait to hear this on the drum !
Chris, you have a viewer who was a snare drummer on the Morris Brown drum line in the movie. I had a small conversation with him. NOW!! GET THE DAMN DRUM FIXED!!!. Kidding . Please keep the videos coming brother. PEACE
Love the videos. The editing was already great and is only getting better.
Love the powerline shirt, I legit have that exact shirt.
Also love your work, but damn that shirt made me so happy.
YES! I 2 I is the greatest bop of our generation
You guys are doing great keep up the good work!
Man I can play that whole skit from the beginning of the movie to the end of that movie with no problem
you should check out Jackson State’s “War and Thunder” Drumline !
This was truly amazing. Well done
Man o man.... I am genuinely surprised at how invested I am in your video! To say I loved every minute of this would be a huge understatement.
Wow, thank you! 🙏
I almost threw my phone when you hopped up to do the snare solo 🔥
Hey we have the same Powerline shirt😂😂😂 nice homie👌🏽 and great vid also!!!!
This is so friggin awesome, thank you!!
Like the editing with the movie and the replay!
First off, the Powerline shirt is SICK!! Annnnd to take over onto Jake's, 🤘🤘 FTW that was Epic 🤘🤘keep crushing it dudes
Aye yo!!!!!.. m so excited
.
The drum pad steal was awesome!
BRO!!! DOPE POWERLINE TEE!!!
Dude!!!!! That shirt is everything!!!!!! 🔥
I love your shirt! lol I need one. A Goofy Movie! The music was so good in a kids film.
So cool you got the PEARL snare! Enjoying your chanel so much. Keep it up!!!
I was literally about to comment you should do all of the final Part of the videos on the drum, and then you said it right after I thought it. 🤯
Amazing
I Remember sitting my living room playing this over and over again Playing along
Hilarious ending!
Ive been waiting my entire life for this very moment
Get black friends I could of taught you this cadence at 14
The one dislike was that dude where One time at band camp didn’t work out smh. Fire! Can’t wait for the real drum fellas 🔥🤟
Though it probably matters very little, they say “BREAK.. IT!!” in the beginning. Also, loved the “Outta my way, Jake! I’m gonna play YOUR drum.”, and the mic (stick) drop at the end
That was a beast
This is sooooooo fun to watch
Hey thanks Dillon! It was a blast to shoot too!
AWESOME
MB clearly won it's not up for debate
Best video I’ve ever seen
Great video as usual...and the edit skills are great. Congrats!!
Killed it!!
Awesome video and nice shirt! Haha good ol goofy movie. Always loved that part cause it reminded me of prince who was the man
When you shoved your friend out of the way to play the other drum.
Cackled 🤣😂
He has a powerline shirt. I respect him.
This was Me in high school saying
Morris Brown won! I appreciate how smooth you pick up everything!
That was sooooo 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
AYE I GOT THAT POWERLINE SHIRT! Its the bessst
I gotta say man you’re a badass percussionist I love your vids
This was dope and the switching drum pads man I loved 💯 your nice as hell on the sticks man keep it up
Haha thanks man!
I did band all my life and never noticed homie being a half a second off to the attack until now…damn
Finally!!!!!!!!! The one I been waiting for lol
Nice powerline T-shirt 👍
All day 🙏🏼
Oh yes the legs are back!! Wait wait where is the drum... we are waiting here!!... I am 🤯🤯🤯when you hop over and tap the other practice pad, you guy are a mess 😂😂😂👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😂
I'll never look at an Almond Joy the same again in my life.
@16:52
Actually, Nick Cannon IS a natural snare drummer!
FYI
WOOOO ANOTHER VIDEO
I like the Jake cam
genial .... todo un pro
Can you do a video discussing your background in music I’d love to hear how you got started in percussions
Love this idea for sure!! If people are down we can definitely talk about our journey in music, it's been wild for sure!
Dope🔥.
Chris, loving the Disney shirts! Jam cam is 🔥🔥🔥 top notch quality and content! I look forward for more videos! Can’t wait to see the new drum in action and everything else you guys are working on. Idk about anyone else, but every single time after I watch these videos it makes me wanna get a practice pad and sticks and learn how to play!
Thanks so much!! A little Disney obsessed for sure haha
Salute to you bro...Nick always stay flamed for his acting career but ibfkn love this movie and I don't fkn play any fkn instruments I just love the shine on the marching bands....
Was NOT expecting him to run over to the second drum pad
I did the big laugh
Those kevlar heads back in the late 80s...couldn't help but do a little scratching...
very skilled
Only thing I’d say is that I feel like the the music from the video over power the actually sound of you playing at the end for the final play ,wish it was a little lower to hear all your notes being played on the practice pad, other then that I love this series! Keep it up !
I was thinking the same thing; only complaint I could come up with for the whole video was just the mixing for the final take.
Yeah 100%! And I realized it right after I uploaded 🙃🙃 Always learning and getting better haha and it will be well balanced in a couple weeks when it’s on an drum for sure!
JAKE CAAAAMM 😍😍 YAAAASSSSS!!
Dude of course they won!!! 😂
Yes..please whiplash!!!
Morris Brown definitely won!
What all the naysayers don't understand is that in the HBCU band world the flash/entertainment is JUST as important if not moreso than the actual music being played.
That hardest bar sounds like a machine gun!!!
I feel like we need a dance video with that shirt :)
How about that one part where Devin and Sean go at it on the tape and Devin sees what he plays on paper.
Yeah another great one! On the list for sure!
Can’t wait to hear it on the snare. It’s hard to hear the drum pad on this one for some reason
NOT THE TURNTABLE SOUND EFFECT! HE THREW IN A WIKKI-WIKKI!!!!!! #HereForIt
Love the shirt hahaha
Can you do the 2 extra cadence in the bonus features from the movie???
Currently working in Florida doing the Load In for WWE. I work as a stage hand and this is the perfect wind down after s ten hour shift building scaffolding 🔥🌲💨
That is awesome!
Currently in Tampa for work, what a small world
I'm really thinking about trying this on my MPC......
