One of the most famous scholars to have lived since the revival of Islam by the Prophet Muhammad [SAW] 1400 years ago, was Imam Ibn Taymiyyah [RA]. No student of Islam can be ignorant about him. Like all famous people, Imam Ibn Taymiyyah had a controversial standing in the society of his time. Some people supported him, but those who opposed him were infinitely larger in number. Following is a brief biography of his life and the legacy of his work.

*Much needed advice from Ibn Taymiyyah* 👍
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
"Many people, when they see evil or when the Muslim ummah goes through a lot of trouble, panic, lose hope and start complaining as people who are beset by calamities do. But this is forbidden; rather what is enjoined is to be patient, to put one’s trust in Allah, to be steadfast in adhering to the religion of Islam and to believe that Allah is with those who fear Him and those who do good, and that the best end is for those who fear Him; whatever befalls him is because of his sins, so he should be patient, for the promise of Allah is true; he should seek forgiveness for his sins and glorify and praise his Lord morning and evening."

If every verse is to be taken seriously, then Allah almighty also says:
And whoever is blind in this (life), then he will be blind in the Hereafter and will be (even) further erring away from the way.
      [Qur‘an 17:72]
Wait? Does that mean disabled people who can’t see will also not be able to see in the hereafter? Of course not you mushrik, this talks about the blindness of the heart and it’s a metaphor. The same goes to the verse you mentioned. "With my own hands: in this verse us purported to mean "with my potency and power." Not literal hands.
Astaghfirullah Al-Adhim. May Allah forbid us from this ignorance and polytheism. No, not only mu‘tazila and Jahmiyya but muslims don’t believe that Allah has literal hands.

      Have some shame.
Why are you trying to compare Almighty Allah to creation? Like the way Christians did with Jesus.
Our pious sahaba may Allah be pleased with them all also knew about these revealed verses and text but they didn't resort to literal meanings and they didn't delve into the howness of written words. Translating them into another language and pertaining that they are actual literal body parts of Allah Almighty is Shirk Akbar. Audhubillah

"We conclude that it was eyesight as it is in the *Sahih narration* from Qutada from Ikrama from Ibn Abbas who narrated that the Prophet said : ‘I saw my God in an image of *a beardless (young man), with long curly hair in a green garden.’"*
Source: Al-Tasis fi al-rad ala Asas al-Taqdis by ibn Taymiyya, Volume 3, Page 214.
"He permits the possibility of His sitting on mosquito’s back”
Source: Al-Beshara wa al-Ithaf Allamah by Hassan al-Saqqaf, Page 21.
If He (God) wants, He can sit on a mosquito’s back.
Source: Bayan Talbis al-Jahamia by ibn Taymiyya, Volume 1, Page 568.
Ibn Taimiyah cited this text from Sheikh al-Daremi and he wrote that he believed in it.
Interestingly, there is a similar belief in Jewdism, because they believe God rides on an angel. We read in the The Old Testament, Book of Samuel, 22:11 (King James version):
"And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: and he was seen upon the wings of the wind."
Enough about your gods attributes, let’s see what ways of transportation he uses to get to his intended destination:
”Allah is able to relocate from here to there through rope”
      Source: Majmu’a al-Fatawa, Volume 2, Page 76.
      Mashallah what a Tawheed.
May Allahs curses be upon Ibn Taymiyya and his followers.

Ibn Taymiyya was born in Harran, Mamluk Sultanate to a family of traditional Hanbali scholars. He had Arab and Kurdish lineages by way of his Arab father and Kurdish mother. His father, Shihab al-Din Abd al-Halim ibn Taymiyya, held the Hanbali chair in Harran and later at the Umayyad Mosque. And the Tatar and Mongols are the modern Turks that occupied that area.

It is not correct to say that he was against philosophy, he was against the philosophers and those who borrowed from those philosophers and tried to apply their thinking to the deen however he explicitly said that he did not oppose the subject of philosophy where it is inline with the Qur'an and the sunnah. Without philosophy we would not have usul al-fiqh and such, so it is important that we precisely translate and clarify these terms for people, because you have people nowadays who say statements such as 'we Muslims oppose philosophy' which to any rational person is an absurdity, may Allah forgive their ignorance.

Ibn Taymiyyah was a great scholar but he was controversial and some scholars even declared him an antrophormopic (such as ibn Hajar al Haytami and as-Subuki). Some even went as far to declare it kufr to refer to him as Shaykh al Islam. However, he was defended from these allegations by the likes of Mulla Ali Qari.
He was also self taught in many aspects and was arrogant and his positions in many instances went againt ijma. Imam adh-Dhahabi gives the most balanced view on this.
He was also a philosopher but was againt Greek philosophy, not philosophy itself.

For example, the grammarian Abu Hayyan praised Ibn Taymiyya until he found out that he believed himself a greater expert in the Arabic language than Sibawayh, whereupon he disassociated himself from his previous praise. Other former admirers turned

Ibn Taymiyyah and His Heretical Beliefs
    QUESTION:
Who is Ibn Taymiyyah, whom Wahhabis [Salafis] call Sheikh-ul-Islam and follow?
What did our scholars say about him?
    ANSWER
He was formerly a Hanbali scholar of fiqh and hadith.
    Then he became a la-Madhhabi.
He was jailed in Egypt twice due to his writings that went against Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l Jama’ah.
He was born in 1263 in Harran [a town of Urfa province in Turkey].
He died in 1328 while he was imprisoned in the citadel of Damascus.
Ibn Taymiyyah could not appreciate the superiority of Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l Jama’ah scholars.
He denied Tasawwuf (Sufism) and, therefore, deviated from Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l Jama’ah.
His books are sources for opponents of the four madhhabs who call themselves Salafists.
Opponents of the four madhhabs praise him and address him as the master of restorers (mujaddids) of Islam.
That Ibn Taymiyyah was unfortunate and misguided is written in the books Sayf-ul-Jabbar and Talim-us-Subyan.
The latter was written in Persian.
In the book Tathir-ul-fuad min-danis-il i’tiqad written by Muhammad Bahit, who was a Hanafi scholar in Jami-ul-Azhar, and in the other books, such as At-Tawassuli bin-Nabi wa bis-Salihin,
Shawahid-ul-Haqq, Jawahir-ul-Bihar, Sayf-ul-Jabbar, and Talim-us-Subyan, it is proven with evidence that Ibn Taymiyyah lapsed into heresy.
Ibn Battuta, Ibn Hajar al-Makki, Imam-i Subki, Izzaddin bin Jama’a, Abu Hayyan Zahiri, Zahid al-Kawthari, Yusuf an-Nabhani, Imam-i Sharani, Ahmad bin Sayyid Zayni Dahlan, Sheikh-ul-Islam Mustafa Sabri Efendi, and many other scholars wrote refutations to Ibn Taymiyyah and explained his heresy and k*fr beliefs.
    Necip Fazıl Kısakurek said,
    “Sayyid Abdulhakim Arwasi stated,
‘Ibn Taymiyyah was a mulhid who damaged the religion from within.’”
(Turkiye’nin Manzarası [The Scenery of Turkey])
It is written on the 107th page of the Tafsir of Sawi that he was misguided and misguiding others.
    Islamic scholars stated:
“He was a person whose knowledge was made by Allah سبحانه و تعالى‎ a cause for his misguidance.”
[Ibn Hajar al-Makki - Fatawa Hadisiyya]
“Ibn Taymiyyah was such a person that great scholars gave answers to his corrupt opinions and flimsy evidence and showed the ugliness of his ideas.
[Muhammad] Izz ibni Jama’a [Shafi’i scholar of fiqh and hadith who served as a qadi in Damascus, Egypt, and Jerusalem] said about him,
‘He was a person whom Allah سبحانه و تعالى‎ misguided, led astray, and made wear the shirt of lowness.
He foolishly raised objections to Islamic scholars and especially to the Rightly Guided Caliphs.’”
    [Ibn Hajar al-Makki - Al Jawhar-ul-Munzam]
“The ideas of Ibn Taymiyyah are worthless.
He was misguided and misguiding Muslims.
He deviated from the consensus of Muslims and took a heretical path. Islamic scholars stated in unanimity that he was a heretic.
Kutbud-Bardiri wrote this in detail in his commentary on Mukhtasar.”
    [Tahir Muhammad Sulayman - Zahiratul-fiqhil-Kubra]
“Kitab-ul-Arsh is one of his most awful books.
There were scholars who said that a person who addressed him as Sheikh-ul-Islam would become a disbeliever.”
    [Imam Subki]
(He says so in the supercommentary on Nabras)
“Whoever follows Ibn Taymiyyah, his property and life is halal
    [lawful].”
    [Mirat-ul-Janan, supercommentary on Nabras]
Ibn Taymiyyah says in his Kitab-ul-Arsh,
“Allah sits on the Arsh, and He leaves space for His Messenger to sit next to Him.”
In his book As-Sirat-ul-Mustaqim, he declared some notable companions, such as Ibn Abbas, disbelievers.
    [Kashf-uz-Zunun]
In his book Al-Abudiyyat, he says that making dhikr of Allah’s سبحانه و تعالى‎ name is innovation and heresy, and he made vicious slanders on Sufi masters.
    Ibn Taymiyyah said,
“The existence of the Arsh is beginningless [qadim].”
    [Sharh al-Aqaid al-Adudiyya]
While descending from the minbar of the mosque of Damascus, he said,
“Allah descends from the sky to the earth just as I am descending now.”
    [Ibn Battuta - Tuhfat-un-Nuzzar]
Even Abd ar-Raziq Pasha, who was a disciple of Abduh and followed in his footsteps, said,
“Just as Wahhabism is linked to Ibn Taymiyyah in one respect, so the reformists ideas of Abduh, who is called the restorer [mujaddid] of the current century, are linked to Ibn Taymiyyah.”
    Ibn Taymiyyah said,
“It is not necessary to make up qada salats.”
However, making up a qada salat is obligatory in all of the four madhhabs.
He claimed that the torment of Hell would notthe eternal.
However, there are many Qur’anic verses stating that disbelievers will remain in Hell eternally.
    (Al-Baqara 81, Al-Ahzab 65, Fussilat 28,
    Az-Zukhruf 74)
    By saying,
“Umar made a lot of mistakes,”
he objected to the hadith-i sharif that says,
“Allah سبحانه و تعالى‎ has put the true word on
the tongue of Umar [He never makes a mistake].”
Even if the majority of the Companions erred in the matters deduced by way of ijtihad, their errors were related to ijtihad.
It cannot be known whether a mujtahid erred in his ijtihad because an ijtihad does not invalidate another ijtihad.
For this reason, those honorable people,
who were mujtahids, should not be criticized.
Though the ijtihads of the four madhhabs are different from one other, their founders did not criticize one another on the basis of difference in their ijtihads.
He attacked Sufi masters, such as Hadrat Sadraddin al-Konawi and Ibn Arabi and said,
“The books of Ghazali are full of fabricated hadiths.”
    (Hadiqa)
    Hadrat Imam Sharani stated,
“Ibn Taymiyyah denied Tasawwuf [Sufism] and made defamatory remarks on the Awliya’.
One must beware of reading his books in the same way as one bewares of predators.”
    [Tabakat-ul-Kubra]
    Hadrat Imam Suyuti stated:
“Ibn Taymiyyah was arrogant and full of himself.
It was his habit to represent himself as superior to everybody, to look down on the person whom he talked to, and to make fun of great scholars.”
    [Kam-ul Muarid]
Muhammad Ali Bey said in his Hitat-ush-Sham,
“Ibn Taymiyyah’s and Priest Luther’s aims were identical.
Whereas the Christian reformer was successful, the reformer of Islam was unsuccessful.”
    Hadrat Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani stated,
He spoke ill of the great ones of the Companions and said,
“It is haram to set out on a journey to visit the grave of the Messenger of Allah.
[Hadrat] Ali’s imaan was not valid because he was a child when he believed.
[Hadrat] Uthman had excessive love for wealth.”
    [Ad-Durar-ul-Kamina]
    Hadrat Ibn Hajar al-Makki said,
“Ibn Taymiyyah denied the immunity of prophets from sins.
However, it is one of the attributes of prophets.”
He objected to one’s visiting the blessed grave of our Master the Prophet and those of the
Companions, the Awliya’, scholars, and pious Muslims.
He considered it haram to use them as a means for intercession.

Ibn taymiyyah was misguided. He likened God to His creation. To liken God to his creation is kufr.
The correct belief of the Muslims is - God is the greatest in status and exists without a place. God is not a body. God is not like the creation.

Does god Exist ? Yes, but not in the same way you exist.
The same applies to the rest of Gods attributes described in the Quran. We are not likening him to his creation, he exists in a way that befits his majesty.
