Much respect. I own a small engine repair shop in South Carolina. What we do is starting to be a dying trade. Lot of machines are throw aways now a days. The only way I make money is by fixing stuff and not replacing parts. And the worst thing is a customer bringing something back. You take pride in what you do. That itself is a dying art. Couple of points. When removing white cartridge, be very careful if you use small flat blade screwdriver that you insert it deep enough between side of white cartridge and black sidewall so you do not damage the thin O ring at the top of the white cartridge. When reinstalling this cartridge, be aware there is a plastic sleeve that sits in the body of the carburetor between the butterfly valves. It has a hole in the side wall of the sleeve. You cannot see this hole unless you remove the sleeve. This hole in the sleeve lines up with a hole in the body of the carburetor. The central jet of the white cartridge must pass through both of these holes to seat properly. Sleeve can shift while you are working on carb making it impossible to reinstall white cartridge. Cartridge should install with little pressure to seat it properly. If you find it very difficult to reinstall, sleeve probably moved and holes not aligned. To fix this, need to gently remove the larger butterfly valve (throttle) metal piece. It fits into a slot in the small plastic pin the holds it in place. GENTLY spread the slot apart and GENTLY remove this metal piece. You can then pull the pin out giving you access the the White/Grey sleeve. Can use your small finger to reach into space to sleeve. Use small probe and insert it through the hole where the main central jet on the plastic cartridge seats in the carburetor while using your small finger on the sleeve to align the holes. Once aligned, remove your probe but keep your small finger on the sleeve so the holes stay aligned and reinsert the plastic cartridge. Should easily seat in place. Reinstall throttle pin and gently insert the metal piece into the slot in the throttle pin, making sure you have it oriented properly. What should have been a 20 to 30 minute job today took almost 2 hours because of these issues (torn O ring) and trying to figure it out ( as well as breaking that plastic throttle pin and having to glue and clamp it and waiting for it to cure before being able to reinstall it)

  • @joesinakandid528
    @joesinakandid528 Před rokem +2

    Steve, a simple observation:
I use small engines A LOT when mining in Alaska. THE worst source for water and "stuff" that clogs jets is the gas can. "Stuff" just appears in them and no one notices until the jets get jammed shut. A good, micro screen filtering funnel helps A LOT on water and junk. You checked out Mr. Funnel products a while ago and I use them 100% of the time because "Time is Money", especially WAY back in the Pucker Brush.
Another "trick" from long ago is to KEEP the fuel tanks full when storing for a short time. The water that gets into the fuel (especially Gasahol in the lower 48) comes from the outside venting / air exchange of the fuel tanks. With a lot of air in the tank there is a lot of expansion / contraction of that air and the water vapor is drawn in with that exchange air. A full tank at the end of the day or before short storage means very little air exchange and almost no condensation water.
Long term storage means draining the tank, running the engine until it stops and then final draining of the tiny bit of fuel in the carb bowl. Open Ended, Really, Really long term storage means a little 2 stroke oil in the cylinder to help with rust and at a later start-up.
I just stumbled on my first Briggs plastic carb yesterday.
All I Can Say is they sure are strange. Thank You, for helping, Steve.
P.S. - No Gasahol in Alaska - it freezes in the winter. 😵‍💫

Thank you Steve! I've got a Troy-Bilt with a Briggs engine and the plastic carburetor. For a while I got by by removing the carburetor and merely sloshing it around in a can of gasoline. Then the frequency and character of the problems increased. Most recently I got the oscillating engine speed. That's a nightmare. I ordered a micro drill set from Amazon because I wanted a next day solution. I also order the set with the HSS drills. That left me with a smallest drill size of .6 mm but I decided to go with that because I didn't want to fool around with stainless steel drills. I followed all of your instructions after very carefully enlarging the main jet to .6 mm. It started on the first pull and ran smoothly. I could have never imagined such a simple solution... but it worked! Thanks again.

Thanks Steve! I just got home from picking up a brand new (last year) mower for $25 that is currently on Sale at Canadian Tire for $429.99, normally $499.99.
I put a couple of drops of fuel in the carburetor and it started up for a second.
I've been working on small engines for close to 50 years, and have no doubt I could have easily taken the carb off and cleaned it etc. and had it running.
I also consider myself smart, so came here looking to see if there were any tricks before doing the job. I did see your previous video about the choke getting stuck. I will look there first.

Cheers my friend...

I messed around with starting fluid and gas additives for a couple hours on the B&S engine on my power washer, then hit CZcams for the solution and this video absolutely nailed it. I pulled the carb apart and blasted some high pressure air through the cartridge. That cleared all the small jets and ports inside the cartridge, I put everything back together and it started on the first pull. Thanks for the how-to and quick fix. Much appreciated!

I'm wondering if the gas additive removed debris but then it got stuck in the tiny cartridge holes. Factory flaw, but glad for this vid to become aware.

My son brought home a mower that wouldn’t start, I noticed that it had one of those Walbro plastic carburetors. The jet was clogged with what looked like corrosion so I drilled it out with a.04mm drill bit. Blew out the ports with carb cleaner. This mower runs like new.

I love your common sense approach!! Repair, not replace. I have a lawnmower with one of those carbs. It just stopped dead yesterday and won’t restart, but will try with starter fluid. I figured it was water in the carb and checked out your video to see if I could drain the carb bowl with an allen wrench. From the glance of the inside of the bowl in this video, it looks like it’s designed to be drained with a quarter turn. If not, then you gave great info in this video to go further. I did small engine repair 23 years ago. But things change. And at my age now, I forget too. Good job Sir!!

I cleaned my carb 3 times, the gas tank and fuel lines twice, new plug and air filter too! Could not get it to stay running. I mowed my entire lawn by spraying starter fluid at the intake the whole time! I never knew that little white jet housing could come out. Sure enough that “secondary” outlet was clogged. Sprayed it, used my pin vise to loosen the clog, sprayed it again and reinstalled. Now my mower starts on the first try (no ether) and runs like a champ! Thanks again, Sir!!!

OMG, thank you! I bought a 7.25 Craftsman mower off of craigslist for $25. It was in great shape, but advertised as being unable to start. I first changed the plug, but that wasn't the fix. I googled "Briggs and Stratton carburetor issues" and found this page. After watching I took off the carb, which had piss-yellow gas in the bowl, and cleaned it. I also blew carb cleaner through the jet--I didn't need to ream the jet. After reassembling, I checked the choke and it WAS sticking on the frame, so I bent out the carburetor frame as shown in the other video. Long story short: the $25 Craftsman mower runs like new. One more thing: I drank red wine while working on the mower, Steve. Was that okay? Thanks for the great video!

Fuel hose is barely long enough to get a screen in there, and not long enough for a better, paper one. Also, I could not get carb cleaner to go through one of the small holes, but it runs well anyway. Maybe I missed this on the video.

Hey Steve I can relate ‘‘em bare assed after third time with that woman’s mower. Just watched your two videos best way to fix Briggs carb problem and best way to clean a plastic Briggs carb. Could hardly wait till morning to pull carb off of my 5 yr old toro 7.25 b&s. Pulled new carb off for the 4th or 5th time (getting really good at it) I was sure this time was going to be the cure. My bread wire tie measured .016 and was loose in the jet, so I figured it had to be at least .20, which is what you opened yours up to. Put all back together hoping to start on 1st pull, or at least by the 3rd. No go, but here is the thing, choke is completely closed and if I even give it a whiff of starting fluid not a squirt by the closed choke, it starts with almost half a pull. Runs great no misses until I shut it off. Will even start back up. Which tells me it is still not getting fuel??? Still ‘‘em bare assed Bill

My mower was dying after getting hot, running about half way through my lawn, sometimes much less in the heat. I thought it was the choke initially, but watched your vid, cleaned the carb out and checked the linkage clearance but was still having the same problem. I ordered the bits you recommended and drilled my carbs jet out, cleaned again, replaced the old gas and managed to mow the whole back yard.
It might have been my gas, despite running non-ethanol and using fuel additives I couldn't recall the last time I filled my can so I probably should have started there. This was a very informative video, I learned some more about my 7 year old mower which now runs great again and I saved a few bucks in the process.

    Thanks so much Steve,
My neighbor asked me last week if I knew anything about Briggs & Stratton engines. I told him I've had pretty good luck keeping the two Quantum Briggs motors going on the two mowers I have. My mowers are 20, and 25 years old, and they both came stock with the old 3.75 horse B&S engines. The older of the two was lent to another neighbor who was kind enough to bring it back, not only with a bent blade, but a bent crankshaft and of course the lower seal destroyed, rendering it unable to hold oil. :(
Another neighbor of mine was a scrapper, so I asked him if he had any old Briggs motors around that might have a crank shaft for me. He said he had one, but it was a 6HP quantum that didn't run. I asked what he wanted for it, and he said since it was scrap, just my old motor if I could get this one running.
The 6HP quantum had practically no compression, so I went to pull the head off, only to find that all 6 bolts were loose as a goose. I bought a new gasket, put it back together and it's been running solid for 10 years.
The second, the 20 year old mower I bought new to keep at a second property. It had the same 3.75HP motor as my original, but came with a plastic carburetor, which was tank mounted, and looked like my moriginal, however, it never ran right from day one. It was subject to constant stalling, even when my grass was never an inch overdue for cutting. My scrapper neighbor had another Quantum 6HP laying on the ground beneath the bed of his truck, so I asked him what he wanted. Again, he said it didn't run, so he was fine with an exchange.
That motor had a clogged jet, which is such an easy fix, since the jet is in the bowl retaining nut. That motor has been running solid for 5 years now.
I told my neighbor, if it's a Quantum on his mower that I could probably fix it, so he brought it over yesterday.
It wasn't a quantum. It was a brand new Craftsman that had a new style 6.75HP motor with the same plastic carburetor who went through in your video. He bought the mower new at the beginning of the season and was only able to use it to cut his lawn 3 times before it quit running. It would start right up with a shot of carb cleaner, then quit. I was hoping it was just a stuck float, however the bowl was full with clean fuel when I opened it up.
The main jet was visible, and I couldn't see debris in it, so I figured it was time to search CZcams...
I couldn't see how the jet assembly was retained in the carburetor until I stumbled on to your video. Thanks. :)
I popped it out, and it still looked clean, however, I couldn't see light through it while shining a bright light against the nylon on the revers side, nor could I blow air through it. I worked a sewing needle around in the hole for a bit, then I could see light shined against the nylon through the hole. I was able to blow air through, then get a shot of carb cleaner to pass through from the other brass inlet with the output port blocked.
I put his mower back together, and of course it started on the first pull and sounded like a brand new mower. Hmm... maybe it runs like a brand new mower because IT IS A BRAND NEW MOWER!!!
I don't get it Steve. Why are plastic carburetors such a problem?
I have a reasonable understanding of metallurgy, and I could see if it were an issue of dissimilar metals, I.E. if the jet were alluminum, pressed into a steel body. But that is not the case. Why should the jets on these plastic carburetors be so easily blocked?
Thanks again for the great video. Like I said, I couldn't tell for certain how the jet assembly was held in the bottom of the carburetor until you showed me.
    Steve
P.S. Are you really the man of Stihl? :)

  • @directdeliveryexpressinc.4818
