I probably watched 20 or 30 CZcams Videos on how to clean this briggs plastic carburetor. And there is no question that this video was the absolute best. Why? Because he addressed every single point including The need to Make sure certain parts are not exposed to carburetor cleaner because The carburetor cleaner will permanently damage those parts.

I drill out the bottom main jet with a # 72 drill bit .025 works great , starts first pull ,,,,even the ones without the auto choke . Been working on mowers for over 50 years ,,,I'm a 74 year old machinist and I'm like you " Old School " !

Thanks for this video. I watched a lot of them, this is the best by far. It's bookmarked for next time. Some of the parts did not come apart and go back together as easily as in the video . Of course, it could be that I am a 66 yr old grandma with arthritis in my hands, LOL. Other than that, it was easy to follow. One of the sides of the "Tetris" piece was completely blocked. Cleaned the carb, changed the oil, got a new spark plug, got new gas, wiped it down and it started with one pull. Looks good and runs like new! Best part was it only cost about $9 for the carb cleaner and spark plug (had the oil).
Proud to say I've been through a thorough training course of cheap plastic carb CZcams videos and can now easily take apart, fix and reassemble these things. I'm officially self-certifying as a trained plastic carb repair tech. 🤣😎😁
This is the most comprehensive video I have seen on this carburetor. I was able to revive an old MTD pos that I sometimes use where my tractor can't fit.
Didn't start after 2 years sitting idle, but now runs like a champ. Almost threw it away rather than buy a new carb. Only spent $3 on a can of carb cleaner and about an hour time. Thanks

This really did the trick. I'd looked at the plug and tried easy start spray which got the 450e going eventually but this process on the carb has worked wonders. Took me a whole evening as I want confident at first. Very satisfying. I did a lap of honour round the garden.
Got my fist one of these in .. it was hunting ... I followed your cleaning guide. Put it back to gether still hunting.... looked at Steve's small engine saloon .. he recommended to see if a bread twisty tie would fit though the main jet . And it wouldn't after a jiggle it did it was like a bit of grit was stuck fast now it's running spot on.... I'm going to keep this mower for my self ... I think the big problem is there's no fuel filter.... so I'm going to fit an inline fuel filter... hopefully should keep it cleaner. ... good vid tho... I think one of these carbs could work on a sv150 👍🏻👍🏻
It would be a good idea to mention that the primer bulb is a vented bulb and is meant to have a hole in the centre

You are the only one out of many many videos I have watched with the Briggs plastic carb that said there is a round center piece that goes in the carb and connects to the cartridge. Mine fell out and I could not figure out where and how it went so thank you and yes, after pulling the carb out four times the one with your advice fixed my problem. Started up on the first pull!
First time doing anything other than a tune up on a small engine and I've just replaced a leaky carb (I now know I could've probably fixed myself but I digress) and got my old B&S running like the day she was purchased and it was all with YOUR help my friend!

Awesome Job. I've worked and replaced and cleaned A lot of those years back myself. Back when my grandpa was still Alive he had his own lawnmower and small engine repair shops to. I worked at them with him& stepdad when was Alive to years ago. And by myself to. I learned from him watching and helping him work on them.,an took small engines in school and vocational school to for that skill trade to. I was in the 7th grade when I took it down in lake Wales, Florida out Haines city Florida in polk county, Florida. 27 years ago now from going to that school and 28 years altogether. I'm in my 40's now and just pittle around on them now is all anymore. Even though I know how to fix and repair them to. Keep up the 👍 good work over there for sure. 👍 👍 Two thumbs up.

This is they best explanation of the carburetor I've seen I've watched 20 videos non explained the white ring and black gasket ring on the back or the bkank white breather pin and the float I cleaned mine and didn't realize I lost the black ring and couldn't find anyone that said there was one also it was leaking just like you said because my float needle fell off inside. Great job on this it helped alot

It certainly is a POS. I'm on my third on a five year old mower because disassembly and cleaning never helped.
Many thanks MM for this video - it guided me through the entire process of removing, cleaning and repairing my own lawn mower. Just in case these comments are of use to anyone else, especially those who like myself had never taken a carb apart before, follow the above and you won't go wrong. In practise I was a little nervous about messing up my engine which was poor to start and ran very badly - very bad surging. Having opened the carb I cleaned as best I could. I put it all back but nothing had changed. Although dissappointed I had found that since it was so easy to do, I took it all apart again. This time, with a lot more confidence that I could do it properly, I checked all the holes and, especially the 'golden eyes'. Although I had used carb spray on tem before, I decided to use a very thin wire down them and I then found that there was something stuck in one of them. Although I couldn't see what was blocking the hole I felt resistance and then release as the wire went down. With that done I again cleaned and dried all the 'tetris' parts, checking the holes as I went. I put it all back and BINGO - first pull of the chord and the engine fired up - waited a few minutes and it was running as smoothly as new. SO - do have go, follow MM's instructions and, trust me, the pleasure at fixing your own machine is worth far more than the £15 a new carb costs! Again thanks MM!

@@MowerMan Sorted thanks to you Paul! Can I ask a question? There is only one variable control mechanism in these carbs, ie the auto choke. So does that mean that the speed of the engine has a fixed value which is determined by the holes in the 'tetris' part? (Or have I missed something?)

I'm new to this type of work/hobby so I needed some guidance on the carb setup..Like you, I think these are less complicated than the traditional carbs. Going nuts during the Virus Lockdown, came across one of your videos, spotted a neighbour binning a McAllister MPRM46HP, with a Briggs & Stratton 450 engine, and thought, that's something to keep me occupied!! Not worked on mowers before, but, your videos make it look do-able!! I am stripping & re-furbishing it, slowly, got a diaphram & gasket for the gas tank/carb on its way, and, am really enjoying 'fiddling' with it!! Dunno if it will ever work again, but, as I say, its just about keeping me sane!!! Thanks, you two, once again!!!

Totally agree with you Paul. Done quite a few of these puppies, now. Never had an issue cleaning or with reassembly. Easy to get to, and get back on. Quick turn around job. Biggest pain are the spark plugs!

Very informative. I've got a LIDL/Florabest mower with the B&S 450 engine with plastic carb. Looks far easier than i had contemplated as mine struggles to keep running at startup and when it is going it struggles to maintain rpm. If all else fails, it seems i can get a replacement carb from my favourite auction site for £12.50

I have a Troy Built power push mower with Briggs and Stratton engine with similar plastic carburetor but without the primer button. It never would start up right away even with electric (battery) start and I would run down the battery. After watching your video and several others, I felt confident enough to tear in down and clean it and now it starts right off. While I was at it, I cleaned out the fuel tank and plumbed in a fuel filter. I use Trufuel in my mowers and yard equipment. It's near impossible to purchase non-alcohol pump fuel as I live in Illinois which is in the corn belt. 10 percent alcohol is mandated. The jet in the plastic "tower" is only 0,020 inch which is very tiny and can easily be blocked by fines in the pump gas.

Bit of a tip.......... The float pivot wears on these carbs, i have seen lots of these plastic carbs with worn pivots that apear fine (they even seal if you turn it over and blow down the fuel pipe) but if you remove the float cover and turn the carb over and find the float in the closed position is not parallel with the carb body at the min!! I wouldn't even bother trying to service it. I have seen it so often now i can tell you if the carb is good or not just by smelling the engine oil, if it smells like fuel i would put money on you need to replace the carb.

Hi MM, having viewed your video on the Mountfield plastic carburettor, I have just repaired a Mountfield SP185 fitted with a similar carb that refused to start. It would start with a squirt of Bradex Easy Start in the air filter but then immediately stalled.
Following your video, I dismantled the carb and removed the plastic cartridge comprising the thee jets. Having given them a good blow through and proved them clear with carb cleaner the machine started and ran. However it ‘hunts’ or ‘surges all the time. Do you have any suggestions as to what might be causing this as the carb itself is spotlessly clean.
Also can you tell me what the two white plastic plugs are for in the carb. One is a flat topped plug and the other (the one that came off in your video) seems to have a spigot on it which looks like it might fit into a pipe of some sort although it does not have a hole in it?
Have the same usa version of this mower that is surging with a new ebay carb and fresh clean fuel system. Im going to check the very front oring that mounts to the engine other than that not sure? I'll check the primer bulb.
I’ve noticed my B&S500e has started to hunt, would doing this help solve that problem?
What is the metal ball in the tetris part used for ? I took it out and replaced it with other things that would fit in it. It changes speed and then sometimes it doesn't start , depending on what fits in it. Is gas meant to go through and around the metal ball or is it sealed shut?

Following your guidance solved my problem. Thank you. When removing the "tower" I placed a flat head screwdriver in through the hole and pressed down squarely on it. That led it to pop down easily. It felt safer than using the pliers. Is that a bad thing to do? I note that mower has a wash port. I was thinking of adding one to my Viking as a retro fit. Apart from obviously making sure there is sufficient blade clearance is there anything else I should fear? Many thanks again.

Do they sell the needle on it's own? If so, know the part number or link? Thanks. Think rubber tip may be worn and not sealing properly.
Good job on the Cleaning part. However enlarging the hole WILL stop the mower from surging. Use a micro drill to slightly enlarge the jets. I use non-ethanol gas and fuel enzyme. It will not clog with that. When you've cleaned it and still get surge, it's not getting enuff gas. Prove me wrong. Watch the video on how to enlarge the jets.
Do you have any idea the size of those o-rings I use ( you pulled off the jet)something that totally destroyed them???
After cleaning the carb, cut the rubber fuel line (from the gas tank to the carb) in the middle and insert Briggs and Stratton Fuel Filter # 298090S. This should prevent any future fuel clogging issues. Replace the filter every 5 yrs or so. :)

Hi all. My carb is the choke type. After cleaning like Paul, it starts for a bit, chugging along and dies with choke open, unless I put shop air into carb choke, means it's getting to much fuel right? How? Any ideas guys?
Great video, good explanation and easy to follow process. I have mower with a 450e series engine and it started surging, I cleaned the carburetor and though it is better now it still surges. The only other thing I've been able to find is to drill the main engine a bit larger. Is this something you think would be ok/safe to do? Seems like the last thing I can do.

Viewed this detailed video several times - as I dismantled and cleaned one of these newer style carburetors - and - hey presto - my B & S 450 E is working again - thanks very, very much, Mr Mower Man. I do think some of the commentators from the USA have a point (on the issue of the build quality of newer B & S engines) - whatever about the advantages of the newer style carburetor - my "Pro-Lawn" mower - with its B & S 450 E engine - is not as sturdy as the previous B & S mower I had (and which lasted me 27 years). Has Mower Man encountered any cases of the air filter cover coming detached because of the user cutting too near briars that are intruding on a lawn ? I appreciate the solution is to always cut back the briars first but many people are under pressure to get the lawn cut fast before it rains again (or something else needs to be seen to garden wise) - an older style B & S could be pressed into action in less than optimal terrain - and basically emerge unscathed in my experience.

I notice that under the float bowl there is a plastic Allen screw part. Can this be screwed out to drain the bowl for long term storage, and is there a special Allen wrench to be able to fit between the metal deck and the bottom of the bowl to screw this out to drain the gas. I don't want to have to remove the whole Carb. just to drain the gas out of the bowl.

Hey Paul. Looks like the white plastic piece may be an atmospheriic primer vent. If carb is plugged when using primer bulb it vents through that. Why some carbs and primer systems need a vent drilled and some don't I could not find. Thanks for the quality plastic carb vid.

If your nice clean carb floods, chances are that the threads on the bolt that you used to seal the fuel pipe have pulled off a rubber crumb or two that’s now stopping the needle sealing. Using a threaded part to seal the pipe is what is known as a “ hanging offence” !
Btw, can someone explain in detail the purpose of each orifice while showing fuel flow and pressures on this carb for choke type?

I did it! Following your video, I removed carburetor. I opened it up. Pulled out that set of jets. Everything looked fine, but I used carb cleaner to spray-clean all the orifices multiple times. Put it back together. Reinstalled carburetor. Pumped the primer bulb a few times and yanked the starting cord. After a few tries, it started! Ran for about 30 seconds, and then died. I just don't get it. It started, its running for a while, and then it just dies.
have the same problem. 2 years ago i rebuilt this carb and all good. i replaced the fuel cap for shut down it did not help.
If the hole behind the bubble is dirty or clogged, what can you use to clean that out?

Hi my machine loses strength when it cuts grass. It reacts like if it was going to stall. When it’s by itself on it runs well. I cleaned the carb as you instructed and changed blade and the filter. Problem still persists

A new carburetor put it on and it fluctuates up and down when it's running what could be the problem

What Bout it don't start and keep up after cleaning the carburetor
Buy real gas and let it set a few days so trash will steal on bottom
Then slowly fill tank with a clean funal which is kept clean in a plastic bag
You’ll have less carb problems for sure
