  • issues I have found online and thru groups and forums about the 2.4L 2010-2017 equinox.
I currently own a 15 and don't have issues with mine. I made this video to warn others so they can try to prevent these issues from happening to them. not all people will have these issues but it doesn't hurt to try to prevent them from happening.
I am not bashing or trash talking as some have suggested since these are real issues that people have pretty often.

PCV valve issue - cold oil releases water vapor as it warms up. this vapor escapes thru the small hole with any air from the air pressure trying to build up. this vapor can freeze inside the hole in temps below 20F. when the hole is plugged, pressure builds up and blows the front or rear main seal. cost to fix is about $1800.
oil consumption - oil passes by the piston rings and into the combustion chamber so it burns with the gas. eventually, your oil level will be too low to properly lubricate the internal parts and can make them fail. this is usually where timing chains fail, and can also lead to blowing your engine. the sensor in these cars that are supposed to warn you about your oil being too low also don't work. so actually many people drive around with barely any oil in their cars and have no idea unless they check the oil dipstick.
recommendation is to check your oil level on the dipstick and change your oil every 3500 miles or less. go by miles and do not go by your oil life monitor that shows the oil percentage. that is a failsafe to warn you to change your oil before its way too late.
many people who claim they have no issues actually ARE having issues that they are unaware of. when you take your car somewhere for an oil change, you dont see how much comes out. you could have only 3 quarts drain out and have the other 2 quarts burn up, and not know it is happening.
also blowby happens which is common on all vehicles to an extent. but on these cars, the blowby can be worse than the majority of cars. gasoline will dilute and break down the lubrication qualities of your oil over time. it can make your engine wear faster. if you change your oil often (3500 miles or less) you can keep fresh oil in your car that isn't diluted or broken down.
I changed my own oil after buying mine and had 5 quarts come out of the engine. refilled with 5 quarts. after about 30k miles, my oil smelled like gasoline. so I know I have a decent amount of blowby but my oil levels stay full.
I will add that I am not a mechanic, but the oil change of 3500 miles was my mechanic's recommendation, and he literally told me to do so "no matter which oil type or brand you use". the vented oil caps are not guaranteed to prevent the PCV issue but CAN be a 2nd line of defense for the issue.

@@Notyouraveragewhiteguy no that isn't true. 2018-2021 are totally different engines than the 2010-2017 engines. The 2.4L in 2010 and 2011(engine code LAF) were terrible and in 2012(engine code LEA) they did a very small change internally. After that change in 2012, nothing changed until the engines were replaced in 2018. So a 2017 is still prone to seeing the same issues as the earlier ones. 2017 had the same LEA 2.4L as the 2012 LEA 2.4L. Nothing changed at all in the engines between those years. So a 17 is not more reliable. The 2018 and newer cars offer turbo 4 cylinder engines and so far have been a lot better.

One literally was on her way home from getting the oil consumption test started at the dealership. They change your oil like 3 times within 5000 miles or something like that to check the amount of oil lost and decide if your engine needs to be replaced on their dime or not based on how much is lost. So she literally drove like 20 miles on new oil and boom.

I’ve had my 2014 for four years and I’ve had to change my VVT solenoids twice because this engine clogs them up so badly. And then when it happens, the car stalls when you’re sitting still. Right after you take your foot off of the brake, and before you push on the gas pedal. Super annoying because you get honked at lol! That being said, they’re easy to change out and $50/part. There are two. One for the intake and one for the exhaust. Intake is in the towards the front of the vehicle and is gray, exhaust is behind it towards the rear of the vehicle and is black. Autozone has these as a lifetime part, so now you can take the one you purchased from them and simply exchange the bad for the good. If you’re in a real pinch, you can hose them off and it will buy you a touch of time. Thanks for the video!!

Other than the one set of VVT solenoids, which are very easy to replace, the only maintenance I had to do are fluids, brakes, plugs filters, all of which need to be done on any vehicle. No water pumps, alternators, not even a thermostat or hoses not to mention not a lick of work on the AC which still blows cold. Pretty good in my book for a GM with over 220k.

@MrDfbwa I consider a vehicle that you have to watch so closely that it doesn't run out of 5 quarts of oil and blow before its time for an oil change, as high maintenance. Some people lose all 5 quarts in a matter of a couple weeks, let alone before getting their oil changed.
I've owned 16 vehicles, new and old with high mileage, and have never had a vehicle lose more than half a quart before the oil change interval.

      @timmypstyle  Před rokem

@@danr8787 yup they have weak piston rings. Even if you get a new replacement crate engine from GM right now, it still has the same weak rings. I actually explain what happens from the weak rings in 1 of the 2 videos I made.
But yes what you said is kinda correct. Both under warranty and out of warranty, they will have you come in for an oil consumption test. That means, they change your oil, tell you to come back after you've driven a certain number of miles. Then they change it again and document how much oil was lost, and tell you to drive again. When you come back the 3rd time, they change the oil and again document the oil loss. If its over like 1 quart in 2000 or 3000 miles, they will replace the pistons and rings or the engine. Which one is determined by GM based on how bad it is. But that also means that 0.9 quarts lost within those miles driven is deemed "normal" by them. And if that happens, then they won't do anything to help.
If you ever need a replacement crate engine, look into Jasper engines. So far, out of all the people ive seen who replaced theirs with a jasper engine, ive only seen 1 person say they've had similar issues with it.
I got rid of my equinox before anything started with it. The PCV valve should be placed at the highest point on the engine, which in the 2.4 case is the oil filler cap.
Simply buy a non-gm oil filler cap, drill a 3/4 in. hole and put in a grommet, and use any PCV valve that fits.
PCV works off of engine vacuum .
The catch can is the clincher.
Attach an emission hose from the PCV valve to the " in " on the catch can.
Then tee into the brake booster hose, " before " the check valve which is inline, near the booster inlet nipple.
Reposition the check valve in the elbow a little farther down the hose, it still works in the elbow.
You also need a brass 1/2 in PEX tee where you tap into the hose near the booster vacuum nipple.
( you can also ditch the brake booster hose, which collapses for some reason near the rad hose, and replace with high quality 11/32 emission hose)
( using any other hose than emission rated is dangerous ) ( clear teflon being the best )
The "out" hose from the catch can attaches to the brass PEX tee, with the tee facing down.
Mount the catch can as low as possible ( not touching the ground ) on the pass front subframe.
There is a hole there already, for a bolt.
After this is done, you will no longer get white foamy goo on the dipstick, oil filler cap, or on the breather fitting on the air cleaner., at lower temps, etc.
Drilling into the intake manifold PCV orifice is plain retarded and won't cure anything.
Although I don't personally own a Terrain with a 2.4 Ecotec, I know it is a great engine.
What's wrong with the GMC Terrain is the human who did shoddy engine assemblage.
( Any engine can blow up or have serious internal damage for no detectable reason, or no detectable sabotage reason. )
If the assembly line were fully robotized, goodbye GMC Terrain forum.

@@timmypstyle Yes, so much dis-information on a simple fix.
The plastic vacuum fitting on the inlet manifold where the brake booster hose assembly connects, is the best source of vac for the PCV valve. There is no need to drill holes anywhere.
But insert the brass tee 'before' the inline plastic check valve.
That little valve is held in with an Otiker clamp which is easily removed; and then you insert the valve farther into the hose to the right.
The catch can ensures that only combustible vapors enter the engine and thus prevents valve coking. ( GDI fix )
Lately the big car companies have been making Chilkoot Pass type problems.
Big lime-ups at the parts store, ha, ha,...
Let's be glad only Ford does the spark plug blow-out dance ?

I just traded it recently with 82,000 Miles on it.
It burns zero oil, did not have a cooling problem, original engine and transmission, original timing chain, rear main seal, and zero leaks. When I traded it in the dealership open the hood they said to me everything here is original you have replaced no major parts.
I stated there was no reason to it never broke down.
The one thing that I did was always on top of preventive maintenance.
People would say this is overkill but this vehicle never saw a tow truck once.
I did an oil filter change every 3,500 miles and use full synthetic oils.
Every 35,000 miles I would change out the transmission fluid, the rear differential fluid, and the fluid in the transfer case.
As far as any rust issues and paint qualities I would wash the vehicle by hand minimum twice a month and would do a full exterior detail compound wax Etc. Every 6 months.
When I traded it it still looked brand new even the plastic headlights weren't fogged out. It was 6 years old when I traded it and I still got well over 10 grand for it.
With that being said knowing that others had major issues with the vehicle and even though I never did it was always a thought in the back of my mind. For that reason I would never recommend it to anyone.
But it would be up to the consumer to draw their own conclusions on whether they would want one or not. For me it was one of the best vehicles I've ever owned.

I currently have a paperweight sitting in my front yard. It strongly resembles a 2017 Chevy Equinox with the 2.4 I4 engine. Bought it with 22, 000 miles on it and put about 74,000 on it (total of 94,000 miles). In January, my wife was driving to work on the freeway. The oil had been changed in late October, still perfectly good. Out of the clear blue sky, she experienced a dramatic loss of power, followed almost immediately by the Low Oil Pressure warning and a loud bang. When I arrived at the car there was ZERO oil in the crankcase and a huge puddle of oil under the engine. I put four quarts in it, started it up, and shut it off right away due to the enormous knocking noise coming from the engine. Dealership was no help, GM was absolutely NO help. Engine is blown and needs replacing, to the tune of about $5,000. If anyone has a link to the current class-action lawsuit (for the 2017 models), let me know. GM and Chevy will NEVER see another dime of my money. All of the Ecotec engines (2.4 I4, 3.6 V6. and 5.3 V8) have real problems with oil control, and GM does NOTHING to fix them. GM is now at the very top of my corporate S**t list.

These Equinox's are hit or miss. The newer technology using the high pressure fuel pump and dry air intakes has a lot to improve upon. Intake valves are dirty because there is no fuel spraying into them, the direct injection bypasses this. The pistons get sprayed with high pressure fuel ≥500psi! conventional rings were not made to perform under these conditions. The high pressure fuel sprays the oil right off of the cylinder walls as the piston travels. This causes unprecedented wear on the rings and pistons. I like this vehicle, the best advise is to change the oil every 3K and put the updated vented oil fill cap on. I'm in New England, I let it warm up in the winter before going anywhere, especially when it's below freezing.

    • @timmypstyle
      @timmypstyle  Před 2 lety +2

My advise, check your oil every time you go to get in your equinox. Mine has 243000 miles and runs identically to most of the comments on this video and has the same problems. It was an economy SUV that wasn’t clearly quite designed for the average Joe. If you’ve had a few beaters before you purchased one of these then you might have learned how to maintain a high maintenance car like these
Edit: my eco button cause my car to straight up misfire when idling. I’ve replaced VVT solenoids and still does it. Don’t need it tho lol

Thanks for sharing this video. A big issue that I find with used American cars is how sketchy they can be. If the previous owner disregarded regular maintenance (oil and filter chnages), then you the new owner will have expensive mechanical repair problems to deal with.
American cars are more sensitive than German or Japanese cars. I had a friend change out his engine oil on his 2018 Honda Civic every 35k miles and no problems. If that kind of sluggish maintenance were done on American cars, you would’ve destroyed your engine multiple times over.
I bought a brand new 2021 Chevy Equinox and have since put 60k miles on it. No issues at all because I get the engine oil, oil filter, and the engine air filter changed out in half the time that GM recommends.
The manufacturers are in the business of selling new cars and only want to push the warranty for 3-5 years before selling you another new car again.

I have a 2017 equinox. So far it runs like a champ. As long as you take good care of them they will be one. It’s the people who don’t have the issues. Plus there will always in any make or model that have done they will have a few goofs or bad apples in a bunch.

    • @timmypstyle
      @timmypstyle  Před rokem

Sincerely glad yours is doing well. But these things still have issues with proper maintenance. It's design flaw related, not necessarily maintenance related.
You are correct, evety brand has a few goofs and bad apples, but these were enough to cause 3 lawsuits on JUST the 2.4L engines, and now another lawsuit going for all of the engines in the trucks and SUVs for one if the same problems that the 2.4L is plagued with. GM has replaced bad 2.4L engines and extended warranties on the engines that are in good condition. I've seen some people say they lose a quart of oil after driving only about 100 miles.
Again, sincerely glad that yours is doing well. But they are far from being a reliable engine.
I've belonged to impala/monte carlo groups for 6 years, ram groups for 10, challenger/charger groups for 6, and f150 groups for 10 years and even an f150 forum for 17 years. In the 6 months time that I owned my equinox, I've even more comments and posts about the same issues on these than I've seen in all the groups on all the common issues of all the other vehicles COMBINED. More in 7 months in equinox groups than 6 to 17 YEARS of all the others.
Also the new truck/suv lawsuit is for all V8 engines offered for the past 12 years or so. Same oil consumption issues that the 2.4L had 3 lawsuits over.

I own a 2017 Chevy Equinox LT 2.4 Liter vehicle. The oil I use for mine is Liqui Moly. I also have a K&N filter in mine factory standards not the cone version and I have E3 Sparkplugs. I've had not 1 not 1 issue at all since I've done that. I check my oil regularly and I don't skip a beat on none. Not even when mine is in Eco mode. I get about 45 mpg in the city and 55 mpg on the interstate. The reason why I use the K&N filter is because it keeps my engine cool and my fuel doesn't consume so quick. I could drive mine from Virginia to SC/GA line and than I'd have to stop for gas only once before getting to Jacksonville FL. With the E3 sparkplugs I'd use Octane 91+ for those. Now I can pick up speed on the interstate from 0-60 in 4.5 seconds no lie ill do a video one day to show yall. No internal problems at all. And my engine has been successful very well. Oh and guys if you have those vehicles the best way to pick up speed is to use the M gears. Dont worry the transmission is Dual so once u get to where u need to be u can shift it back into drive with no issues. Using the M gears to get on the Interstate drop it 2 gears down. So if your in 4th gear drop it down to 2nd gear and up it to 5 once your past 45 mph. It's considered as quickshift. If you have no experience in driving standard do not attempt to use this. If you do you'll understand what I mean

@@crockpot5194 claiming 0-60 in 4.5 seconds in a 182hp 172lb-ft vehicle weighing over 4000lbs is BS when a camaro SS is barely quicker than that with double the power and less weight.
A k&n filter won't cool off your engine and might change the intake temperatures by a couple degrees which means no increase in power. E3 spark plugs were aimed for economy, not performance, and have so far been proven to not do a damn thing.
Getting 45mpg in the city(over double the rating) and 55mpgs on the highway(almost double the rating) is also BS. Even with the best oil in the world, you won't increase your performance by more than a few horsepower. I have owned 15 vehicles including muscle cars, and none have done 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. Especially when I used to have a 200hp monte carlo SS which did 0-60 in 8.5 and currently own a 242hp monte carlo that does 0-60 in 7.0. On top of that, I have had a near 460hp ram and currently own a 15 challenger R/T which weighs the same as the equinox and has more than double the power and torque that the equinox has, and it does 0-60 in 5.0. There is no way you're doing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds unless you have a lot of mods including a form of boost.
As for the manual mode, it isn't made to be used as a sport shifter. Its there to hold gears longer fir going up hills or towing. Its not meant to be used every day or for performance. For instance if you were going up a hill, you could manually shift the transmission so you can go up the hill gradually in a lower without flooring it, and that makes it easier on the engine.
I have also had k&n filters in 9 vehicles and k&n intakes on 4. Some added a few mpgs but it won't double your gas mileage. I also currently have a k&n filter in my equinox like you do, along with my 06 monte carlo and 15 challenger both having one. They might add 1 or 2 horsepower. Nothing you do to your equinox will get you 55mpgs except driving downhill and nothing will get you to do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds unless you add a turbo or supercharger, which both would require supporting mods. Even the 3.6L V6 with over 260hp won't do it close to that quick.
