- "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is a jazz-influenced instrumental composed by Dicky Betts that became one of the best-known works ever recorded by The Allman Brothers Band, especially the version on their 1971 live album At Fillmore East.

Many say Rambling Man. To me, this song has always been Dickey’s masterpiece. His defining song as a member of the Allman Brothers Band and his lasting gift to us his fans. RIP brother. Thank you Dickey 🎸✌️
so true. the title is so intriguing with an inpeccable instrumental classic
I agree. Love you Dickey
Agreed. Rambling Man is more of a "basic" song but In Memory is one hell of a composition. Been trying to master this on guitar for several years, it ain't easy!
Nothing like driving down an ole Tennessee back roads in the late 70’s early 80’s burning one and jamming to this at 2am in the morning, today’s generation will never understand how much great music we had from the whole British Invasion and the Great Southern Rock
Country Cruise! I remember those. 😂😂😂😂
RIP Dickey Betts. You will be not forgotten. One of the greatest.
Definitely the best of all the southern rock bands. Could almost be considered southern prog rock.
I was watching this, stepped away from my phone and I knew instantly when Dickey began his solo. RIP Mr. Betts.
Truly a masterpiece in music 🎶.
Remember when intelligent life was on this planet?
Well said.
😂😂😂😂😂
Duane was a force that only comes around once in a lifetime
Doesn't get much better than this, especially live.
Who needs lyrics when Duane and Dickie make their guitars sing.
One of the. VERY best rock bands of all time, in my view. Funky AF. It's almost jazz. And Greg is seriously kicking ass.
finally Dickey meets Duane again.
they will play together forever.
R.I.P
With Berry on Bass!!!
Best band of all time. This lineup can’t be beat. I’m listening to this song and album for 50 years and it’s as good now as it was then
It just shows you that great music doesn't need lyrics. These 6 incredibly talented musicians translate the sound from their heads to their hands and not a word is spoken. This is the finest piece of music I've ever heard in my life!
Absolutely
I also include "Mountain Jam" a masterpiece of jamming
Totally agree man. That has always struck me about this, how the inspirational creation of Dickie Betts- unbelievably complex then translated into a performance that is truly hard to put words to explain or define how it consumes the listener taking them other-world.
When I first cut the album 'Live At The Fillmore' sitting in the hooch back in '71 screaming out of the Pioneer 88's, I was initially captivated by Whipping Post. Played it over and over and over again. Then one of my crew, Jerry Jordan (New Jersey) after a couple of bowls ;-> made me take greater listen to this discussing the performances in detail of each musician. Done! Became my absolute favorite of all time. Hundreds of listens latter, still my #1 listen to of all time.
I believe it is the best song ever written
Hey Abe I can agree with you but not whoever it was that has some sort of problem with Eric Clapton who is arguably one of the best guitar players rock and roll ever had and I'm thinking that the song that is playing has a serious Steely Dan vibe to it 😊😊😊
If I'm not mistaken a graveyard headstone was the inspiration for this song. Along with some classical music key
Besides Fender and Gibson, America gave the World Music that will ALWAYS be " Remembered 🖖 🇺🇲 💪
Absolutely🎸🇺🇸🎼
Rest in Peace Dickey Betts
This, 50 years later, is still powerful stuff.
It could be released now and blow the world away! It is Timeless!
People are so talented. Thanks for visiting the planet
Bought this record when it first came out. Still think it sounds best on vinyl. Learned every lick. Huge thanks to Dicky Betts for making the world a more beautiful place with his gorgeous music.
Epic song - one of my ABB favourites. Fantastic guitar playing - two brilliant solos.
This is the epitome of rock music as art.
It was around 1967. I wanted to know who would be playing this weekend, so I called the Fillmore. The voice said “Fillmore”-no mistaking that voice(OMG, that’s Bill Graham)..er ah, “who appearing this weekend?” The answer from Mr. Graham “Jimi Hendrix and Gabor Zsabo”. Me-“is that all?”. “That’s enough”, said Mr. Graham. Love it!
While listening to this, I turned into a bobblehead for 13 mins, such a great tune!
RIP Dickey
The Allman Brothers at Fillmore East is the best live album ever recorded!
True that
There's no such thing as the best ever
@@nathandodge665It's his opinion. So go away.
@@3-ddjr460 and in my opinion there's no such thing as the best ever
this is their greatest song
I was there and couldn't believe what I was hearing.
Was in 9th grade 1971 it blew me away then and 52 yrs later still kikin my ass man something else..
My favorite band
Duane was the best guitar player EVER....!!
Top 5, # 1 Slide Player
I think this may have been the 13 minutes when civilization peaked.
LOL Good one bro! :->
There's a very good case to be made for this, Jack.
Why isn't this the greatest rock song? But stairway to heaven is?🤔
Gone WAY downhill since then....
Hey Jack this is Jeff Yoder the ol'broke down scooter tramp (exbiker) and I'm wondering what civilization peaking or not has to do with how popular this song became and still is today 50years or so later 😊😅😊😅😊
Masterpiece.
I love this song !!! Never got tired of it. I've listened to it hundreds and hundreds of times since I first heard it in 1971
Like All Great jazz !! Really .....👍👍Southern Rock Forever ! Long live Duane .. Greg.. Barry ... Butch ... And now Dickey ( finest Greatest Les Paul player Ever )
This is the quintessential version of this song. I have been back and for through dozens and keep returning to this. I studied and performed this with a pretty decent band live and know the movements well. This is it.
The world is truly blessed to have this piece of music in it. God Bless the Brothers. And us.
Duane, Dickie, Berry, Jaimoe, and Butch setting the bar HIGH!!!
betts, just a fantastic song writer and guitarist and just an intricate piece in the greatest band ever.
With all the debates that have been going on for years as to who was the better guitar player, everyone misses on important point: they were friends. They each had their own touch, their own style and it's easy to tell which one is playing, especially on this song. I'll miss you, Dickey.
Masters of the Southern Jam. Timeless, their music will be around forever.
So much different from Skynard, but both are legends 🎸👏
The very definition of rhythmic propulsion. The ABB maintain an energy level that keeps this song moving forward with increasing intensity from start to finish. Thank you, Dickie Betts.
Proud to have seen them at Macon Coluseum 1971 10 yrs old mind blowing good thank you lord
Unbelieveable!
Absolute talent across the board
RIP Dickie
Pure bliss………….. no better jam
Perhaps the best Southern Rock Instrumental of ALL TIMES!!!
10:00 Duane, what a great guitar player. Died much too young.
Absolutely mesmerizing.
I hard this tune først time 50 years ago. Still the greatest of all times.
I remember hearing this as a teenager in the 70's. I thought it was so beautiful. That jazz flavor is something else.
Nothing else in this world matters.....music.
Often referred to, and correctly so, as the greatest of all time.
The name of the song came from a tombstone in Rose Hill Cemetary in Macon. Dickie Betts had no idea who the lady was. He needed a name for this number, saw her headstone and the rest is rock history.
@@nancykelley9541 I also heard that he was doing some things by the graveyard, with a couple of chicks...
@@TheGuitarMan71 The chick was Boz Skaggs' wife. He couldn't very well name it after her.
Still gives me chills...
Oh, baby! So incredible!
Most soothing exciting surprising challenging. Inevitably shyly shoulder shaking songs ever then you realize that there is happiness in the world. Best band ever for my simple rastes. Music nature love harmony blues jazz gospel epic solis dual drums incredible dual guitars and phenomenal bass creative harmonic interplays with hammond organand guitars....godh just another babd. Thank you guys and jaimoe and Richard Betts for all you gave us. May yhe road go on forever. Peace. Malcolm
WOW!!! I love this beyond words! At 69 years old, I have never grown tired of this absolute masterpiece. In high school, we did our best to cover this band, never coming close but what a voyage and no better template to follow.
It's not an easy song to cover man. Dickey is quite underrated as a guitar player I think. He is masterful along with another guy next to him, Duane. Too bad we've lost so many. I was way over bummed about Jeff Beck this week. He was another influence in my playing. I'm 68 and played since I was 9. We're in the same era obviously and appreciate the really great stuff. Long Live ABB!!!!
I’m 66 and this was the first album I’ve ever owned. This is one of the finest compositions of rock, blues and jazz ever written. An absolute masterpiece and I never get tired of listening to it!!!!
I'm 69 a Vietnam Vet...these guys are dynamite...they don't make music like this anymore I pity these young people now....
Me TOO!!!!!!°
I'm 68 and I share your sentiments. This record inspired a generation of guitar players.
One of the best jams ever recorded!
Absolutely just don't have music like this any longer and it really to bad that younger people have to listen to crap they call music today
@@johntweedly8170 To that, I've heard more than one 'younger person' say to me, "I was born way too late!" and comment how they got hooked listening to their older brother/sister's music.
It's not a jam, it's composed
Magic
Well, I'm old enough to have heard this Liz Reed when it first came out, which I did. I grabbed my guitar and started jammin' my a$$ off and it has remained one of my favorite songs all my life. This song is one of a couple Dickey tunes that make you think you are not listening to a 'southern rock band'. The ABB had so much versatility in their music not to mention some of the greatest musicians of all time.
I always wondered if Duane had lived, would we have heard Ramblin Man, Pony Boy, Jessica, etc.? Duane played with Herbie Mann, idolized Kind of Blue, and the band rehearsed My Favorite Things in the Gatlinburg session. Would Duane have continued to explore the jazz/contemporary genre?
Would there have been "space" for Dickey to inject his love of country music that emerged in the Brothers and Sisters album that I so strongly equate with southern rock? Regardless of the answers, this band's music has touched my life for 50 years in ways I do not understand and cannot explain.
best ever, 50+ years.
Kind of ironic but was feeling sad learning about Dickey but then listened to this and all I could do was groove and smile to it....when it ended I then felt sad again knowing that we will never see this kind of greatness again
How dare anyone say they're a' Southern Rock Band'!! Absolutely brilliant!❤
They invented the genre...but I get it!
Too narrow
A Southern Rock Blues Jazz Band, right?
They’re Southern, that’s all you need to know…
RIP Dickie, Duane, and Butch and Greg.
And Berry
Berry’s counterpoint to Dickey & Duane is exquisite. He chooses his spots without ever getting in their way or overplaying
No version of the ABB ever has come close to the original lineup. They achieved Musical Nirvana for a few short years and then it was gone.
This was at the Fillmore East and is the version that was featured on their Live at the Fillmore East LP. It's great to have a video version to watch the masters at work!!!
Helped me in the 70s now 56 still learning from these tones they were a force from a God only knows peace ✌
Capolavoro senza tempo!
the geniuses of double d[duane n dickie n gregg and all of the band]can't be compare to anyone
Their guitars are so in tune with each others..
Thanks to Mr. Richard Betts, for writing the greatest rock instrumental ever written..
The music world is most appreciative…
Honing his craft, Duane constantly listened to Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" I can see why; The greatest jazz album of all time with chock full of improvisation clearly brought out the best in Duane.
In highschool, I wore the grooves out of the vinyl playing this record.
...I'm doing my best to wear out my iPod listening to At Fillmore East version...
Hopefully when they meet in heaven Elizabeth Reed will thank Mr Betts for putting her name on such a wonderful piece of music.

My friend turned me on to the Allman Brothers live it to Fillmore East I think 40 years ago! This is gorgeous!
I was 15,in 73, saw them at Watkins Glen festival, it was MAGICAL!✌💛
Smoked a joint with Greg, yrs later in Bflo, when he was here for drug court, lol
I was there and its great now as it was there a brthr4eva play all night and they played too the morning
went to the wed nite show at the fillmore when they recorded the album
Hoo ralhh incredible rip Brothers
This is close your eyes and drift with it music
Well said.
No song without words ever, could ever take your mind on a longer more fantastic voyage of love, energy, tranquility, longing, hoping, power, insane crescendo, followed by peace, brought back to a total climax....makes you wonder how gifted man can possibly be, and how special Elizabeth Reed must have been to inspire this art in her memory.....
Betts got the name of this song from a tombstone in Rose Hill Cemetary in Macon.
But he was thinking of a love interest when he came up with the tune. Butch came up with the drum break and felt he should have been credited for it.
Simply the Best.
One of my go to escape tunes in high school 64 in NH
One of my go-to escapes back in '71 'doin' time for the man' in a hell hole a looong way from NH. Loved my years later in NH before moving down to NC in 2016.
That Elizabeth Reed must have been a very special lady to have this masterpiece written in her memory....
Story has it Dicky wrote this for the women he was having an affair who happen to be boz scaggs girlfriend at the time. He took the name eliz Reed of a tomb stone at the Rose Cemetery where he used to go.
@@paulcudone4642 Rose Hill Cemetery is in Macon,Ga where the brothers lived and are buried in Rose Hill.
There's more to that story you don't know about
It was just a random name on a grave stone , they chose , at the cemetery where they used to hang out ..
Incredible
Best Live song ever! Hands down
Best live song ever is POWER OF SOUL from Band of Gypsys. Sorry
RIP Ramblin man ❤
A lot of remarks about the video not matching the audio. Who really cares? This is from the beginning when Duane was still alive. This is classic no matter how it’s on here.
It’s close enough for me. Rip Dickey
I’d love to see the actual performance. Such a great piece, it would be great to have the video also.
A lot of stuff is coming out now. One guy says that the ABB recorded everything they ever did. Duane Betts playing Blue Sky with TTB is killer. He looks just like his daddy!
Sin lugar a dudas, muy buena música. 😂
Was blessed to see the Allman Bros live and boy did they chop it up! What an underrated band that not everybody knew about but those wh did, loved them. Duane & Greg Allman & Dickie Betts and the 2 drummers, Wow! Their music sounds as good now as when they were touring. RIP Duane & Gregg...
Don't forget bassist Berry Oakley. He and Sky Dog had a special bond that created some of the best grooves that have ever been laid down. Macon " Eat A 🍑" Georgia!
Also RIP Butch Trucks. btw who in the hell has under rated this great band ????
THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND GENIUSZ GENIUSZ GENIUSZ nad GENIUSZAMI KOSMOS KOCHANI na zawsze dziękuję BARDZO
Dickey playing that SG
The first time I saw them was in '69 in Sarasota summer break I was fourteen. Already a seasoned concert rat. I and everyone else was in their feet in complete happy disbelief as to what we were hearing. They just overwhelm you with tastefully done awesomeness from Don't want you no more to Whipping Post, but the song that grabbed me was In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. I remember thinking, G D they don't even have to sing. Then they rented a house on the Myakka River in Venice for all night long rehearsals replete with kegs. And play all night they did.
Did you see them at the PLAYGROUND SOUTH in Sarasota?
They used to rehearse there before tours back in the day.. 👍
Wish I could go back in time!
The ORIGINAL Masters - The Magnificent Six! This song has been rendered by other legends later in their own beautiful ways too, but this ORIGINAL one still sounds soooooooo goooooooood!!!
The only other band I know except the Dead to have two drummers merging seamlessly into one class act.
Yeah the two drummers always created a slight cacophony on the bottom which was a magical layer of sound for band to play on top of. Never heard anybody do it as well as Allman Brothers.
I think about what the Post Duane/Berry accomplished, but this band would have been sooo huge if they didn't die. Soo good
Incredible performance. It’s the actual recording that made it onto the Allman Brothers Live at the Fillmore
This is the audio recording but the video is from a different set intermixed with additional video. Do a quick search for this song at Fillmore and you’ll see matched audio and vid. about 8 mins long.
I noticed the video of Dickey playing rhythm while he’s heard playing the volume swells. I’m ok without this. I have seen better film footage from this time period.
Yepper from one track and not re-mixed!
This is footage from 1970 put to Fillmore East lp. Still awesome! BEST F-CKING BAND EVER! EVER!!!
my hubby play bass... my favorite on this one is all
