The bridge on RSC 287, located between the Santa Maria Air Base and the access junction for Silveira Martins at kilometre 227 on the Arroio Grande River.
Emergency services are responding to the scene, and authorities urge motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
The death toll is expected to rise as hundreds of people are missing in Rio Grande do Sul while the state suffers "its biggest disaster".

The same thing was said about the flooding in New Orleans but when the damage was looked at the so called sinful areas, strip joints, jazz, drug use, prostitute areas were largely spared and the middle class family neighborhoods were hit hard. We currently have more than 115 people missing, 80 people dead and thousands of people homeless. And to make matters worse, there is still a forecast of more rain and a drop in temperature.

Now they started to parade with tanks and we managed to see some helicopters, but today is the fourth day of the tragedy. The response in this type of event must be immediate.

I'm crying just reading the comments, I'm Brazilian, not from Rio Grande do Sul, but this is one of, if not, the worst catastrophe Brazil has ever seen, neighborhoods and cities disappeared, hundreds of thousands of people lost pretty much everything, hundreds already died, there are people still missing, so many animals died as well. I have been crying every day, for them, so many lives have been destroyed, people's hardworking and achievements, all gone.

Where you see the river, there used to be roads, streets and houses. all the lower parts of entire cities are flooded. the water reaches 5 meters high at these points. entire cities became rivers.
Many people were sleeping when the water began to invade the houses, with no chance of many being able to evacuate to a higher area as no one knew where the water was coming from. Many elderly people drowned at home, and thousands of animals drowned.
