  • DRAMATIC new footage shows a major airport drowned in 7ft of water after "apocalyptic" floods continue to hit Brazil.
    At least 145 have died and more than half a million have been left homeless as endless torrential batter the country's south.
    Salgado Filho International Airport has been caught up in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul's "worst disaster."
    A shocking video showed jumbo jets floating in water next to a desolate airport that now can only be reached by boat.

    Prayers to the people of Brazil from NYC. A jet with flood water up to the wings is a hell of a lot of water. Disasters like this bring out the Best and the Worst in people. People want to help their fellow countrymen, yet others just want to loot and pillage. So many places on Earth are going through catastrophic disasters in many forms. It was heartwarming to see those workers rescuing that horse. I worry about what could be in the water besides physical obstructions. Just imagine how awesome it would be if every civilized country offered whatever they could give in assistance. Prayers for Brazil.

    I'm currently living in Porto Alegre, the floods hit most of the generators, a good chunk of the city is left with no water, and the flood water is still high. Most of the city is safe, but being the state capitol, nearly all of the refugees and rescue centers are based in the city, which strains our supplies tremendously.
    The city is also partially blocked, and the ramaining passages are crowded with food trucks, donations, rescue crews from the rest of the country, etc.
    To all who read this: nature acted to cause this, but not alone. We contributed for events like these to happen more often and more aggressively, and it just did. the flood we had in 1941 was surpassed already, and the only reason why it wasn't 3x worse for our city specifically its because we had a wall built after that first flood
    Make a difference, don't let giant corporations burn the world to a crisp for money, don't let politicians slide when they disregard maintenance that can save lives in disasters like these, and most importantly: Don't neglect the past, for its just a taste of what can, and will, happen in the future if you don't help prevent it.

    The saddest part is that it’s not only far from over, the worst flooding is happening now. The peak should be on 5/14 or 5/15. Since the water just meet the ocean in Rio Grande, and the lagoon mouth is narrow, it’ll take a lot of days for everything to go back to its normal levels. We are going to recover from this (we are a very resilient people), but it will be a slow and painful process.

    What happened and is happening to Rio Grande not only affected them, it affected the entire country and do you know why? Because they are the largest producers of grains, meat and others in the country. What is happening is so serious that I am from the state of Bahia, which is 3000km away and food rationing in supermarkets is starting here, that is, we cannot take more than 3kg of rice and beans per person. All the land for planting was destroyed and only God knows how long it remained unproductive and this is very serious! Brazil is so big and glorious that it feeds billions of people in the world, so start praying because if agribusiness in Brazil is affected, the catastrophe will be global! Everyone went hungry, I hope you understood that it is not just a state the size of several European countries that is going through this misfortune, it is a country and if there is a lack of food here, it will be lacking for you too!

      Indeed we had 3 kinds of floods...
      1- In higher lands (serra), a very aggressive flow in the rivers, due to volume x gravity;
      2- In Porto Alegre metropolitan area, the coming water spreading on plane low areas due the pouring of Lago Guaiba;
      3- In southern cities 280km away from Porto Alegre, due to the limitation for draining in the exit channel to Atlantico.

      That's nothing, but because Caxias is in the mountains area, and many people died in landslides in the Galopolis district and also the neighboring city of Bento Gonçalves, any small shake makes perks afraid of landslides
      The tornado was not in Caxias do Sul.
      Tornados are "common" in the state. In 2010 a few blocks of the city of Canela were destroyed by a tornado.

    Sadly, these extreme weather events ARE THE NEW NORMAL and will only continue to get worse with the ever growing sea level rise due to our polluting of the atmosphere, so the world must quickly take drastic measures to move away from fossil fuels because we have built our civilizations on stable climate patterns that are now a thing of the past.

    Brazil needs more investment in flood containment and less money spent on things like bicycle paths and cheap scooters. Those might be popular with youth but do little for climate change. The climate has changed and now countries must address these problems with major infrastructure projects.

      The huge Lagoa dos Patos acts more like a reservoir of all this water instead of emptying it away because of its narrow exit as someone has already pointed out. Moreover, the huge distance between both points (almost 300 Km) makes it difficult for all this water to move forward. The variable prevailing winds play an important role too, because it pushes the lake's water to one direction or another, according to its ever-changing direction.

      Honestly as a Brazilian person the international help has kinda been disappointing. Expected partners like Uruguay, Argentina, and Portugal are sending help. But several other countries that Brazil has helped before in other disasters didn’t. But I didn’t expect much from BRICS, because it’s a purely economic block, when it comes to military allies Brazil is 99% times on the U.S side, and has a lot of missions in NATO countries.

    Only this single state of the federation is larger (in territory) than the United Kingdom. Economically developed, in relation to other parts of Brazil. Many descendants of Europeans since Rio Grande do Sul, having a colder climate, attracted many Europeans (Italians and Germans). Many people who live in tall buildings and houses refuse to leave their properties for fear of the numerous robberies that are already occurring.
    The most frightening thing will be the robbery that politicians will commit due to this catastrophe, since we have highly corrupt rulers in power, whom we already know from other times. Many people will profit from this sad episode.
