Look the thing he asked to kratos about him turning into animal, is actually quite true i guess he can see future he have abilities like her mother, after all his name is loki (god of mischief) he can shape shift into anything
I think its really a testament just how well written and acted Atreus is. Child actors and child characters are often times incredibly cringy to watch. But Atreus is an absolute delight. I think it's important that we have more things like this to inspire the next generation. This culture is full of media that mocks and belittles fathers 24/7 so its obvious none of that shit has helped fathers either. That being said it will take more than representation in video games to turn deadbeat fathers around. But it's still good to cultivate a culture that celebrates and perpetuates it as a good thing like what this game does here.
@@isaacling6560 because that is the reality for lots and lots of people. A joke like that does not stem out of nowhere. I think more people have been abandoned by their father instead of father's staying with their child. The majority of people I knew growing up didn't have dad's, and it was usually because the father's didn't want anything to do with their kids. Most Men just don't want the responsibility.
You know, Loki having a talent for language does make sense. That means he can easily learn the nuances of each languages grammar and communicate effectively with different groups far better than other beings can. The trickster needs to be able to play both sides after all.
Didn't they also allude to the fact the world serpent we see in game is from after Ragnarok through time travel or something? I remember mimir saying something about it
"I am a God, boi, of a land far from here." "How far?" "Far enough that when I killed your granduncle, the God of the Seas, that the resulting tsunami didn't wipe out this land and made the franchise's continuation possible."
@@purplefood1 Poseidon- He's the god of all the oceans in the greek world. They are not on the same planet in the God of War universe. Cory Barlog confirmed this. Other wise helios's death would have stopped the sun everywhere too
They’re not in the same realm. Each occupied its own distinct sphere. I like to think that with Zeus’s death, the universe folded in on itself and Kratos’s fell through the cracks onto the Norse plane
What boils down to me in this scene, is how a hack and slash RPG, can turn into a beautiful and in-depth story. The creation has reached a place where few do, The beauty of emotions showcased in the story and the scenes, is so well ingrained and very mature from a perspective. Its amazing. Hats of the whole team on this.
I think it's very interesting writing that as Atreus finds out about his birthright, his innocence manifests both in a childlike wonder for doing cool things, and the seeds of the corruption and uncaring for others that most other gods in the saga portray. Kratos is surprised by the first, and ashamed, possibly even worried over the latter.
Kratos growth is what makes the game good. In the beginning he was always distant but this scene here just shows maturity of a man that once kicked a mortal to his demise because he was in his way
Angel of Sarcasm In the game, there is a scene where Tyr is said to traveled to three other mythologies/realms, Greek, Egypt and the buddah thing. Not sure what is it called. So, i’m sure there was a war, or something.
I remember being so worried when they replaced Kratos' VA but Christopher Judge killed it It's bits like when he says "Truth...? Truth." to himself and the tone of voice is used so well
4:30 There is something beautiful in the vulnerability Kratos gives. The same that was his remorse for his previous family. At the highest peak of Greece when the gods abandoned him and when he gave the power of hope to a land he himself doomed. As it returns to this one moment. Fearing he will loose everything again if he would to reveal his nature to his son. Only to be surprised by his response. “Can I turn into an animal?”
I wonder what came to Atreus's mind before this reveal? That his father who beat the shit out of countless beasts and KILLED a god is just an ordinary, everyday man?
I know right! He sees him carry an entire tree on his shoulder and he just thinks that's totally normal. But as people point out they're so far from other people he obviously has no frame of reference.
@@asafakiva1619 it was much more focused. Ragnarok had to be bigger because it was the sequel. And they did an amazing job with it. But this one benefited from being so streamlined in its goal and character involvement.
4:31 Pause and imagine Gaia saying this: And at that moment, it dawned on Kratos that his son should know full of his past. For in truth, would he grow closer to his son. And by doing so would ultimately put Kratos one step closer in accepting his past.
I love how Kratos’s voice cracks slightly at 5:13, because he’s just in complete shock that Atreus goes directly to that instead of asking about his lineage
Hold on a fucking minute. If Kratos is a god, then how the fuck does he look older? If you were a god, then you can live forever. But Greek (when previous God of War games were set) times and Norse/Viking (where God of War is now) times are only a couple thousand years away. He looks around 20 years older in this game compared to the rest. So mystery solved...Kratos really isn't a god, he's just some guy that ages about 3000 times slower than the average human. And has pure white skin. And happens to have a red tat. And a shittier version of Hercules.
heatedgamer276 Who said that they can't look older. I bet Zeus wasn't that old man on his day of birth. He was once young, too. Or do you think Aphrodite was always a grown woman. They can look older but stay immortal and live forever.
Man I love this story. It’s so humbling. It reminds me a lot of the Logan and Last of Us storyline of a father figure who has a hard time taking care someone by their side on a journey they never wanted to be on which eventually causes conflict. It also reminds me of the Black Panther story of passing the throne to someone else who exactly isn’t ready yet
It's quite heartwarming to know that Kratos is damn near 1,100 years old, and has lived his entire life in every sort of mental and emotional anguish possible. He however remains unbroken, yet he still has much to give to Atreus, and as we have seen it he too is learning from Atreus. He very well might be the only reason why he continues on through life.
Oh my God of War, I love this game. The touching moments, even the smallest details, like Kratos' voice cracking. The team and cast of Santa Monica Studios have really outdone themselves. Cannot wait for the next game!
4:14 ouch, Kratos must have felt that cut. Probably was thinking Atreus sees him like Zeus, a father that doesn’t love his son. But Kratos does love him. He just isn’t good at showing his feelings. But that changes in Ragnarok. He has some serious character growth. Let’s people in. Shows he cares. And even cries at the end.
@@alfredohumberto2222 When all you know is rage it’s kinda hard. But hopefully we see more of Kratos’ story through the background items of Atreus’ adventure like how Tyr’s temple had all sorts of stuff from other cultures.
I really enjoyed that single part when Kratos caresses his boy. I think it´s one of the few times of the game, if not the only. "I had hoped to spare you" 5:47
"The truth... the truth... I am a God, boy. From another land far from here. When I came to these shores I chose to live as a man... But the truth is, I was born a god... and so were you. *hesitates for the long moment of rage and fury he fears will come* Boy? Have you nothing to say?" "I'm... Can I... turn... into an animal?" " *almost disbelieving his son's curiosity about his powers can so easily overcome the resentment he fears has grown between them as well as someone so innocent being born from his blood* Can... you... turn into an animal..? No. No I do not think so..."
I can’t wait to see how they’ll tackle Atreus travelling to other lands. Hopefully we see glimmers of Kratos’ bloody history and his bright redemption. Would like a Tyr’s treasury room reaction with the other gods and stuff XD
You can't really blame him, he's just a child, and all of the sudden he's a god. Atreus might look weak compared to Kratos and the other gods/demi-gods but remember that time he killed like 300 dark elves all by himself? Those creatures would kill a normal child in mere seconds, even a normal human warrior. So it's only natural that his ego would sky-rocket.
@@thed858 You know we all assume it will go down tragic knowing the mythology of ragnarok. But after what kratos did to magni and modi, I'm sure the fate of those two won't end in tragedy.
its character development. if you went from averidge person to God your ego would grow too. and you would have the disconnect from mortals. think of dr manhatten. his disconnection and practical godhood lead to melancholy. kratoses own god status was a veeeery similar kind of arrogance
The relief and complete dumbfounded look when atreus asked if he can turn into a wolf. The beauty of childhood innocence. The acting here is truly perfect. I love that people actually have to act in video games now. It makes them into an amazing journey instead of a meat grinder. Even though this game is also a meat grinder lol
Kratos really deserves the dad of the year award for this storyline….most dads say that they’ll travel through the depths of hell to save you…Kratos actually did for his son
Instead of encouraging him to hold back his powers, Kratos actually invites him to try experimenting with his god powers by trying to turn into an animal. Good god dad.
fun fact, Loki at one point turned into a mare and got with Svaðilfari (a different magical horse) and gave birth to Sleipnir, Odin's eight legged horse. in case you needed that image in your head.
@@Blackhawk211 people do tend to understand that "Mare" is a term for a female horse, and that giving birth is a generally female trait, and wether the rape thing is true or not, im completely unaware, not to mention it's irrelevant to the story (I've never heard that before, but knowing Norse myth it wouldn't surprise me at all. Also does it count as rape when they're animals? That's just kinda how they do, isnt it?)
I really like how when Kratos was pushing the boat away from the shore, the voice actor literally stressed what he was saying at that moment. That is really an attention to detail.
Yes... Kratos was born and bred as a Spartan. He only knows war, battle, and power. When he was about to die in battle, he swore his soul to Ares - not because his death would hurt his family, but he just wanted to win. And when he was granted Ares' seat, he immediately abused it. His son's innocent reply means that he is no were near like Kratos of old. The writing of GoW4 was rather brilliant.

Hopefully all of these dad simulators bring about better fathers in real life for a better future.
This game is awesome btw.

Unfortunately this led to Atreus developing such an arrogance that he went and needlessly shanked Modi after they defeated him and he was powerless.

The same that was his remorse for his previous family. At the highest peak of Greece when the gods abandoned him and when he gave the power of hope to a land he himself doomed.

I wonder what came to Atreus's mind before this reveal?
That his father who beat the shit out of countless beasts and KILLED a god is just an ordinary, everyday man?

To be fair Atreus probably lives in a secluded cabin in the woods all his life. How many people does he know?
They lived a secluded life so he really did think it was all just normal everyday kid/man stuff.
I know right! He sees him carry an entire tree on his shoulder and he just thinks that's totally normal. But as people point out they're so far from other people he obviously has no frame of reference.
As much as I loved Ragnarok, I never felt a scene as epic as this one. The way kratos’s face is portrayed and revealing he is a god. Beautiful scene

The conversation that every father and son wants to have.
Well well well…. Years later and Guess what… he CAN turn into animals 😂
I absolutely love Kratos in this game.
what I love about this scene is the humbled response kratos says after atreus asks if he can turn into a wolf "you are welcome to surprise me"
This scene has aged beautifully. In Ragnarok Atreus can become a bear and a wolf.
“Can I turn into an animal?” It all came back around.

Also a bit of relief too.
"can i turn into a animal?" 4 years early
And then his ego rises... God I hate those moments
