I think its really a testament just how well written and acted Atreus is. Child actors and child characters are often times incredibly cringy to watch. But Atreus is an absolute delight. I just love how despite being in such intense circumstances, he is still believably a kid who acts like a kid. He learns and grows and his relationship with his father evolves through ups an downs. Honestly, Santa Monica went all out didn't they?

When Kratos first told Atreus and asked “Have you nothing to say?” his expression looked like he was expecting a serious response, and Atreus’ follow-up question on whether he turned into an animal took him by surprise. It’s almost as if he was reminded that Atreus was still a child who’s only heard of godhood through stories of legend.

Well... That's what happened when you believe 100% of an unknown prophecy.
When you believe too much of a witch prophecy, you inclined to do what it's state and not preventing it.
Edit: I mean... If Ouranus did not believe in the prophecy... He won't hide his offspring inside Gaia's bowel which made her hurt. Therefore ordered Cronos to cut Ouranus genital and subsequently overthrow him.
The same with Cronos. If Cronos did not believe in the prophecy, he wouldn't eat all of his 5 children, (Zeus was replaced with rocks by Rhea) and subsequently overthrow by Zeus afterwards.
And if Zeus is not being so arrogant and as well as believe in the prophecy of being overthrow by one of his spawn... He wouldn't be so afraid like what he did to his father, Cronos. And of course... Kratos overthrow him as well as done the worst... Kill every single supernatural being of Greeks... 😅😅😅😅😅

Kratos: You see that it does not.
Atreus probably sees that as Kratos being disappointed in him, but the truth is that's just Kratos' way of saying, "Don't you dare scare me like that again". This sort of reminds me of Simba and Mufasa, after Mufasa rescues him and Nala from the hyenas. Mufasa is harsh and stern towards Simba, but he softly admits he was scared that he would lose Simba. Kratos is still blunt towards Atreus, but you can tell that he's doing that to hide how scared he was for his son.

But Greek (when previous God of War games were set) times and Norse/Viking (where God of War is now) times are only a couple thousand years away. He looks around 20 years older in this game compared to the rest. So mystery solved...Kratos really isn't a god, he's just some guy that ages about 3000 times slower than the average human. It's quite heartwarming to know that Kratos is damn near 1,100 years old, and has lived his entire life in every sort of mental and emotional anguish possible. He however remains unbroken, yet he still has much to give to Atreus, and as we have seen it he too is learning from Atreus. He very well might be the only reason why he continues on through life.

You can't really blame him, he's just a child, and all of the sudden he's a god. Atreus might look weak compared to Kratos and the other gods/demi-gods but remember that time he killed like 300 dark elves all by himself? Those creatures would kill a normal child in mere seconds, even a normal human warrior.
