You think he’ll ever challenge Atreus in order to die by his hand instead? Keep the curse of parent killing going?
I don't think so. In scene after final fight with Baldur it was made clear, that he doesn't want Atreus to kill him. Not that he's scared, but because he wants to end vicious cycle of gods enslaving/killing their own parents. He wants to have normal, human relationship with his son, like one he had with his greek family, before gods got involved.
the genius writing of the first scene with Baldur is that he’s not actually talking about anything Greek, he thinks Kratos is the Giant he’s looking for. “Your kind being more enlightened” and “long way from home” are referring to Giants being intelligent and the realm of Jotunheim
but at the beginning we think he means gods and Olympus

I just love how Kratos has become so wise over the years. He used to be a rage-fueled god-killing machine. Now, he is a wise god-killing machine.
Anything can change but the only thing that remains the same is him killing gods.
Time tempers even the sturdiest of things at any given time.
Kratos has had time to finally think and is trying, genuinely trying, to be better for his son, the reason he has try for.
A god of war with untempered lust for war and battle can be a deadly and vicious opponent. But is blind and arrogant, easy provoke and prone to unquenchable thirst for war.
But a god of war that is most of these but tempered by wisdom and able to think clearly, is an even more dangerous adversary. Especially when the reason reinforced with the instinctual need to protect his son.
Still rage-fueled, but only at right times.

Well, at least it wasn't his power, so no reason for Kratos, the god of strength, to think that his son would have those odd powers.
I bet Kratos would've preferred to have some of those more exotic powers himself though. He tend to value cleverness and tactical thinking over the raw power he often rely upon.

@Top Lobster Thats just from 300 Sparta didnt have voting, that was silly and Athenian, they had a dual monarchy instead with one king focused on the military and the other focused on domestic affairs. However Sparta did still treat its women alot better than the neighbouring city states of Greece, Women where trained to fight being expected to help defend the city should it ever be attacked, they where educated as the Spartan men would spend most of their time in the Barracks meaning it was up to the woman to oversee any family business, the running of the home, and anything else one would need an education for. As in, he is a monster out of anyones control at this point.
@@Observer413 I like that explanation alot more :)
Honestly it might be a mix of both. He is a beast freed from the control of all but himself. He chooses where his blades go, where he walks, and what he does. Not some pansy's or snake's or hypocrite's control. And for him it means making sure his son lives
It’s crazy to think that the gods really thought that he was just going to do their bidding forever. As if someone being controlled would not want freedom at some point in life. Luckily, Kratos had enough anger, skill, & backbone to get him to this point.
God Complex is real, & I can see why Kratos despises it.
The Greek pantheon sure was keen on the whole "servitude for eternity" with kratos. The guy only did what they asked in hopes of getting some peace and perhaps the chance to make atonement for his mistakes, and at every step they took it further and further until they just said "nah we're never letting you go" and somehow expected the guy to just go along with it.
The first scene wasn't a reference to Greece, he had no idea who Kratos was. He came searching for a giant, not knowing it was Faye, or that she was dead. The giants were considered an enlightened and peaceful culture among the nine realms in this lore.
It's unclear whether Kratos knew in that situation. Maybe Kratos thought that the stranger was referring to his home country and his past. So, perhaps, slightly indirectly this clip fits the theme.
True, but it is what we are lead to believe at first, that Baldur knew who Kratos is.
If thor knew who he was baldur did too

Kratos trying so hard to make sure Atreus doesn't fall in his footsteps
Really tells you the sheer skill Kratos possesses as a result of his training and tactical mind. He is capable of using almost any weapon efficiently, sometimes better than their original owners. Despite all the madness, he was still disciplined enough to apply skill and control over his weapons, mastering some of them within seconds.

Everyone gangstah until Kratos teaches his boi what to do when a O appears above a lady's head.
Discipline and self control are things Kratos learned as a Spartan, but he's always been a beast of rage as well. It's interesting to see the dichotomy, because in this game you're most powerful when you enter Spartan Rage. Now, that could be a way of saying it's a controlled, practiced rage, but more likely it's using Spartan to draw from Kratos's past and saying "time to go nuts like you used to, dad".

The most emotion we’ve ever seen from Kratos, the absolute refusal of losing another child haunts this man and it’s so chilling.
"That's a mother's promise" that line right there I believe speaks volumes about Freya and her fate. She may be a God, but like alot of mothers- She is a mother before anything else, yes she was selfish and desperate when she made sure nothing could hurt/kill Baldur but then again a lot of mothers would go to great lengths to ensure that no harm befalls their children.
I think her motherness (Is that the proper term?) will be the reason for another pivot in her Character in GoW:Ragnarok, despite her motherness already being the change in her role from ally to enemy. A lot of people in the fandom already hate her for turning against Kratos and Boi but I on the other hand and extremely stoked to see how her story line progresses or ends in the Norse sector of GoW!
I see a redemption arc for her, she's getting lost in her grief after kratos killing her son which is entirely understandable at least from her perspective. I think at some point kratos might do something that'll make her realize that there wasn't any other way to deal with baulder and in the end he ended up that way cause of her while also being given many chances to still make the wrong choice that mad him too dangerous.
It’s ironic really, the fates foretold a needless death to baldur, and Freya made that happen, she made him feel nothing so he went to those extremes
@@colorgreen8728 Funnily enough, had she not treated Baldur like that, he might've been fighting on Kratos and Atreus' side, but might've still died during the fighting.
To be fair, she let her emotions cloud her judgment.
Rationally, she should be thanking Kratos for saving her life from the spawn that was trying to kill her for an honest mistake on her part. In her desire to protect her son, Freya ended up dooming him to misery and death. Hence the phrase, "People often encounter their fate on the road they take to avoid it." and how prophecies are nearly always self-fulfilling. Still, I can understand her desire to protect her child however she could.
Emotionally, she damned him to the deepest pits of Tartarus. Baldur was her boy, her child, and in protecting Freya, Kratos killed him. Yes, Baldur earned his death, but that doesn't matter to Freya. All she cared about was her son.
Baldur, however, didn't care. It wasn't that he couldn't understand his mom's desire to protect him, he did, but the fact of the matter is that he was far too consumed with self-loathing, self-hatred, and a single-minded determination for revenge at being robbed of feeling/sensation to care. He had a mother complex, in the worst possible way, and unlike Kratos, who didn't let his analytical mind go in exchange for pure, blind vengeance (most of the time, at least), Baldur had long ago tossed that aside, since he was invulnerable and could not be hurt/killed.

My favorite part of the Blades of Chaos removal is how you can't clearly ascertain how Kratos is feeling as he reveals them. He speaks with regret and shame, but the moment he needs them he KNOWS it; he trusts their power. When he reaches down for them his hands freeze and lock in fear, but when he touches the blade it seems like a moment of pure reverence.
It's fantastic cinematography and character work.
Atreus fainting with spartan rage is just hilarious
Or maybe it was because his body wasn’t ready to go full on grizzly bear 😂
This game has a HEAVY emphasis on the old warrior trying to right a lifetime of wrongs by teaching his son to not be like him. The entire series is one big lifetime experience. From young adulthood to old, weathered and with a young son.
Wrongs are debatable, as mirmir said and i agree with, they fucking deserved it, yeah probably destroyed the greek world in the process but hey that shit was already on a downward spiral without him and the gods are the ones who pushed it and caused it, and in the end he gave that world a chance to begin again without the bullshit and shitty gods

In the first scene, the stranger think kratos is a giant, he doesn't talk about his past.
yes, but Kratos and the audience don't know that during that scene. Baldur is talking about the giants, but Kratos doesn't know about the giants at that point and believes Baldur is referring to him being Greek and a god. the audience is also led to believe this because at this point we shouldn't know about Faye being a giant or about Buldur searching for the giant. so at this point in the game, what Baldur is saying is meant to be a reference to Kratos' past.

think about it, the reason atreus is so dangerous (or atleast can become so dangerous), is the fact that not only is he part Giant, one of the most intelligent races (not to mention big and strong), but he is also the son of A) a spartan (which means fighting is in his blood), B) the grandson of Zues (so magical power is a given), C) the son of Kratos (so physical strength and i want to say wisdom, is going to be passed on) but he is also being mentored by Kratos, being taught how to fight, how to lead, how to think.

He wasn't in his normal head space in that moment in time he wasn't the kratos who killed zeus or even the one we've seen in this game he was the man he was just before he lost his original family. He was faced with a problem his strength could not solve and there was no god to blame/kill over it. So he reverted back to the only mindset that would have experience with this sort of problem.
