Three quick amendments:
1. While indeed Snorri spent time as a leader in Norway, he was Icelandic by birth.
2. The longer the stories were being told throughout the generations, the 2 fertility gods, Frigg and Freya, began to bleed into the one goddess.
In the Edda's, Baldur's mother is Frigg, but I've purposefully kept it as Freya in this video for ease of understanding.
3. I've made a typing error and wrote Alistair Sung as Alistair 'Yung' in the credits. Getting someone's name wrong is for me, the greatest crime so I am so sorry for this.

You returning to youtube is enough to bring a tear to the eye
God of War removes Loki by putting him at the centre of it all.
You are actually the first person in this comment section to realize that paradox lol.
@@Manor001 can you please explain, I don't understand?
@@Rahul-mm2yu God of War removed the presence of Loki in order to tell their story of Kratos because he is the murderer of most Gods (Kratos' identity and role as a God). But in order for his story in the lands of Norse Mythos to stand authentic, they had to replace Loki's presence with Loki (BOI) and place him directly in the center of it all. It's a paradox where in order to remove the presence of Loki, you have to replace him with BOI. But to remove him, you'll also have to place him in the center of the entire story.
Cool trick of them lmao
You just blew my mind in a million little chunks.
"Untangling God of War" and ends it with Kratos untangling his bandages....
Poetic indeed!
its also Loki's knots untangled.
@@xMostHated I honestly forgot Atreus tied those bandages for him...
“You honor your mother, and abandon this path that you have chosen” coming from Kratos that line is pure chills.
That man can say literally anything and I'm gonna get chills
That line cuts deep considering how Atreus was acting
For me it's when he tries to stop Baldur from killing Freya.
"This path you walk. Vengeance. You will find no peace. I know."
This man has walked it and suffered for it. He doesn't want Baldur to suffer like him even more than he already is.
I like how Atreus switched up very quickly after that
This game and of course Ragnarok being out now are full of so many quotes and knowledge that sometimes makes you go like WOA 🔥🔥
Since God of War Ragnarok is out, you better be making one for that too because this is completely beautiful. Take as much time as you need! This is pure art.
Honestly ragnarok too a very safe approach compared to the 2018 which was far superior.
@@Mr.jbaloch it was more plot and more meaning behind it tho.
@@thewagidabsolutely not. Ragnarok imo lost almost everything that made Gow special. It’s very trite compared to the other.

holy jesus that would be amazing
It’s funny how it ends with him saying “it’s never too late to reinvented the story” and cuts to a black screen where you can see yourself in the reflection of the screen. I appreciate the art and passion put into the video, thank you.
bro... that's genius.
I don't get reflections from my monitor lol
Joke's on you because my monitor's anti glare, so it gives no reflection .___.
Well you just made me cry.....
But my screen is cracked, so my reflection has cracks all in the reflection of my face...making it sound like an insult, like, “...hey cracked face. Ya need to reinvent yourself cuz you are one ugly fu-“ jk
How about the line after Atreus kills Modi? “This knife is much better than mothers.” Acknowledging the temptation of his father’s path of wrath and violence instead of his mother’s path of kindness and peace.
Facts but can you blame him at that age you not going to keep talking about my mother and I just found out I’m a god I’m violating him lol 😂
I don't think Modi is truly dead yet, he's a big character and getting kicked off a ledge probably won't kill him. Some people would say the knife would kill him but again, he's a god so he wouldn't be so easy to kill.
@@bandawin18 I was about to disagree but I think you're right. Magni was killed for good because Kratos' axe was imbued with Eitr from Jormungandr, thus allowing it to kill immortals. Atreus' knife however, has no Eitr in it.
@@bandawin18 he’s only half a god. Still powerful but Thor, vidar, and Odin are the gods that I think will be the end of kratos.

Couldn’t have said it better. I back this up 100%
He speaks the truth!
You know, it's something strange when I never questioned where Loki was in this story. In this entire game, until I got to the end, I never had a thought of Loki.
So somehow, the writers made everything else so attention grabbing, so thought provoking, Odins evil, Thors barbarism, Baldurs Rage, that you didn't need to know where Loki is in this story, or who he was. He was with us all along.
I assumed we'd meet him in a similar way to Freya, since he is a trickster and all it'd make sense if he was hiding somewhere outside Asgard. Honestly when I first played the game I thought Baldur was him before we found out his name.
This comment section has reaffirmed my belief that not all of the internet is a giant cesspool but can actually have incredibly talented and well-meaning people congregate over the crazy dope stuff really talented people make.
It's always nice to have these kinds of moments
This normally happens on people's channels solely focused on making good content, period.
These are rare nowadays, and finding a new one is always a blessing.
Wonderfully-worded sentiment, and I couldn't agree more.
Kratos saying "It was needless and unkind." really show how he grew a bit of a heart.
Tbh he always had a heart, it just kept being destroyed
Exactly, now its a heart that hasnt been stomped on and broken....*Yet* or wont happen again, who knows
In many ways, humans do not change even when they do; much of Kratos' failures and faults stem from the fact that he had *too much* of a heart, and was too open with his emotions.
The "change" was about which type of emotions he expressed. In this way, he's exactly the same person he's always been, he just doesn't *appear* as aggressive.
To be fair he never intentionally hurt innocent for no reason. Yes the prequel games show him being a heartless bastard. However Faye gave him a second chance. A chance to be the true version of himself he was meant to be. Kratos doesn't give a fuck but he know now that just cause you can be cruel and intimidating doesn't mean you need to.... he learned to try to be more Empathetic. Despite the fact he's trained as a Spartan to be a ruthless warrior and he was. But he was also a kind and loving father to Caliope. He's not a cruel man but a man forced to cruelty to because the GODS show no mercy. He know what the Gods are capable of. And he fucking hates them. So he made it a point to NEVER be like the gods of his land or his new homeland.
And way down in Midgard, some folk still do say/That the Spartan's heart grew three sizes that day.
Just absolutely INCREDIBLE!

I'm a father of three....a single father of three with a high school education and held multiple jobs at one time just to raise them. I made a lot of mistakes (some that could have had me locked away for a long time) in life but somehow after time recovered from those mistakes as well as raised all three of my children the best I can. At many times they all exhibited most of the behaviors that set me back for many yrs. It took time, dedication, patience, honesty and pain but it is possible, as you so eloquently put, " It's never to late to reinvent the story". Who else secretly feels bad for Baldur? As inevitable as the battle was, Baldur was a victim in all of this. Odin used him, and Freya cursed him while trying to protect him. Really a sad story within the GOW universe
He could've just left at the end
Especially when you know he is supposed to be the god of happiness and spring
If Baldur had just left after his invulnerability was broken(and getting his ass kicked again) he probably would've gone back to Odin immediately, told him everything he knew, and gotten Thor and or a army of Aesir to back him up against Kratos and Atreus after taking some time to rest and heal from their big fight at the end.

It is amaizing how this video holds so well even to this day. I watched this after finishing gow 2018 and re-watched after finishing gow ragnarok and the whole video is even more on point, bullseye and right on the center story and themes of the new game. Fate and control and the dear challenge of change that Atreus aka Loki strive to in order to prove being better is possible within their narratives, his and his father's. Kratos truly grows thanks to Loki, even as flawed as Loki is in both games. It is actually his flawed nature that brings about a new way on their reality and their father and child relationships. The path they walk may lead to Ragnarok but in hopes of change and not written fate. It is truly amaizing and even if Good Blood doesn't make a follow up video to this one, everything said in this one is even more right than before. GOW Ragnarok goes as far as to change gameplay wise in order to lean on this narrative of change, with some boss battles ending with narrative beats of Kratos growth: by trying to spare his enemies in the hopes of changing his ways as God slayer to the point of being absolutely meta and doing self criticism of his behavior throughout his story on all games. This video and the games are masterpieces and complement eachother masterfully.
I must say that this video has been exceptional to watch and rewatch. The deep dive you do is spectacular and now that GOW Ragnarok is out, I am extremely curious of you doing a video of this caliber on the sequel.
At the beginning, they are both missing parts of themselves.
Towards the end, Kratos teaches his son what it is to be a god and Atreus teaches Kratos what it is to be human. Masterpiece.
When kratos got the blades of chaos again, and him accepting he was a monster and now he has to change is the definition of a redemption ark. Seeing a deplorable and vile man turn into a loving and caring father, not being able to find the right words to express his love was a unexpected but pleasant surprise. No story will ever rival the story of the god of war series in my opinion.
It's only a matter of time. But for now, we have the best damn story told in the gaming industry right here...
Honestly, it makes for a beautiful circle. Kratos was a loving and caring husband and father. To at least some extent, the pact with Ares was so he could get back home to see his family, yet it turned him into the monster that cost him everything. Kratos has now capitalized on his second chance
Kratos was never truly "vile" per say, except after being betrayed by basically *EVERYONE* after the events of God of War 2, and at the start of God of War 3, where he truly becomes a omen of destruction, solely focused on completely erasing the Greek pantheon from existence. When people say he was a prick in the older games, they forget that was never his true nature, he was influenced by many things that ultimately led him to kill all the gods of Olympus.
We are talking about a man that lost all of his family members, except his father, which inadvertedly contributed to their deaths.
That's insanely f*ck*d up.
@@ThePeoplesMoai he also back in the day killed innocents even he admitted it, so yea I would’ve called him a vile man while he suffered for it,it was because he was ruthless
@@nathanmontgomery1516 he didn't kill because he wanted, he killed if resistance was put in front of his objetives, and the innocents he mentions later on in his life, were not killed just because he felt like killing them, it was more of a "oh, I don't mind killing you, since you don't seem to have connections to any of my enemies" so to speak. I was already in tears in the part where Kratos said "Who I was, is not who you will be." Then made me in tears even more after it's followed by followed by "It's never to late to reinvent the story." Then cuts to a black screen, and I saw my self in the screen crying.. Just sent chills to my soul.. This is not just a video, this is pure art. Thank you.
wow the content, editing , execution and the amount of research gone into this video is just top notch. It's like watching a high quality budget documentary but done right
This is genius.

Thats why we love youtube
We live in a crazy time period. That’s for sure.
34:43 Now watching this again it’s really emotional for me I remember playing this game and now I have my own son now . My family history is chaos and it caused a rage inside of me that changed my life . Now looking at this there is hope for change I won’t let my son feel the same rage or pain 😢💔. I will love him and show him compassion kindness and honesty thank you for this video my friend
No one can depicted a story better than you do. Listening to you makes me want to play the game over and over again.
You are simply magnificent.
So glad Kratos found his peace. This game is basically the story of Kratos's therapy
Cory Barlog needs to see this. The whole team does
He should also change his name to Cory and reinvent himself.
He actually has twitter.com/corybarlog/status/1369023373557129216
@@vinnybossman thanks for catching that. Fixed

I can only imagine how much effort went into this video but I want the team to know that your efforts are truly appreciated. I’ve spent no less than 2.5 hours rewatching and relistening to the incredible context and insight you’ve brought to an already great story. Thank you all. Keep going.

See y'all in two years when Good Blood makes a 2 hours long video about GOW Ragnarok

Loki's involvement with god of war's story has been pretty... low key...
Oh shit. That was good
Thanks man, that makes me laugh ♥️
I see what you did there, as did Neil Gaiman!
@Ahmed Al-thabeti two drums and a cymbal fall off a cliff
Eeeeeyyyyy
Requesting a follow up on this for Ragnarok, where Loki's actions make a lot more sense
If I didn't know this was for a game I would've confused it for a history documentary
Masterful storytelling. Dude you are on another level!
Crazy seeing you guys over here, love your work and keep it up
Hey! Another great story teller.
"It's never too late to reinvent a story" this line brings so much hope to everyone who's struggling.
I'm in a place needing to reinvent myself too!
Its very hard! But I hope we all make it brother!
@@Cel2333 Sure, King. We will 👌
I recently finished GoW, not having had played the previous games and not being super familiar with Norse mythology, so a lot of this was lost on me on the playthrough. This video really made everything feel a lot more tied up and complete, and I even got a little emotional at the end realizing that Kratos, Baulder and Loki in that end scene where breaking a much bigger cycle than I had initially realized. Truly an amazing essay.
In Ragnarok, we see Atreus comforting a wolf named Fenrir who was dying. I thought it was just a nice reference. Then, I saw a Garm, a huge wolf chained in Hel and my immediate thought was "Damn. Looks a lot like Fenrir in Norse Myth. That's a cute nod". When I saw Atreus put Fenrir's soul inside Garm, it felt like every single piece fell perfectly into place. Fenrir was technically Loki's child in this cause he put his soul in a new body thus giving Fenrir life again
The DLC nobody asked for, but everyone needed.
so glad to see this come out so the world can experience how incredible it is
Beautifully crafted video, I love the way you entwined the history of Norse mythology and how God of War reimagined it. Keep up the wonderful work, from a LudBud.
Honestly one of the most beautiful videos I’ve ever seen.
The craftsmanship is evident in every frame of this production. The visual coherence and animation. The backbone of deep... DEEP research that supports the essay itself. And most of all, the ability to unpack the game from an objective standpoint and communicate all of the themes that it represents. Untangling and tying up each thread simultaneously, in a perfectly paced and exquisitely produced piece of work. And all of this by one guy. God damn.
Ocarina and God of War are my favourite games of all time. Thank you so much for revealing them to me 🙏
This is CZcams premium: premium
This is probably the best edited, best written and just overall best produced game analysis video on CZcams. Absolutely blown away by the quality of this production. Just WOW!
This genuinely might be the very best video game essay ever made. Unique take, great thumbnail & confident title, and unusually high production quality. Inspiring work!
The moment you realize that Atreus technically has a snake for a child, has a furry for a child, and a dead child
A scaley a furry and a miscarriage
you mean a "dead child child"
