Lancia Aurelia B20 Coupé: An Evolution Of Grand Touring

- Besides heralding the dawn of the great post-war grand touring cars-or as our host Sam Hancock puts it, “vehicles that could win a hillclimb by day and pull up proudly to the opera house later that night”-the Lancia Aurelia B20 Coupés also found success on the circuits and sprint courses of Europe with just a few modifications.
In specifications close to the standard road going form, Aurelias finished second in the Mille Miglia and won their class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1951, before going on to win the Targa Florio in 1952, and the Monte Carlo Rally in 1954. In other words, it has an impressive racing résumé.
The cars’ prowess on the circuits, hill climbs, and rally stages was due in large part to the advanced technology that Vittorio Jano, Francesco de Virgilio, and the rest of the talented Lancia engineers fitted inside the beautifully minimalistic Ghia-designed bodywork.
Besides being part of the first production car line powered by V6 engines, Aurelias like the fourth-series B20 Coupé featured in the film also boasted independent suspension, a rear transaxle transmission setup, and in-board rear brakes, to name just a few of its mechanical goodies. None of this came cheap, though, and while customers were given humble fabric-covered seats, the Aurelia was priced higher than the Bentleys of its day.
In this week’s film, Sam Hancock takes a drive through the winding roads of Reggio Emilia, enjoying and espousing the talents still possessed by this prime example of 1950s automotive excellence.

@@nicksketos4122 For me, I like the history and backstory of the vehicles so much more than the interviews. I just feel like the interviews don't add nearly as much to the videos as the history and backstory. And I find that it's much easier to listen to this host than the old rich car owners who used to get interviewed. If the interviews do ever return, I seriously hope that they're somehow incorporated into this type of video as well.
This was filmed a few years ago for the patreon supporters. The have put a pause on the normal videos during this pandemic and whilst they work out what they are doing after the CEO was let go
I fully agree. The old style was more personal and ”petrolicious”. This new format is just the same as in all car tv-shows.
And Hancock just overacts, trying hard do be some sort of car show David Attenborough. He should relax a bit and let the car be the star...
These classic cars are truly the Grand Tourers - a stately way of life. Moving around stylishly and gracefully. Sad the old world is gone now. The Lancia was such a beautiful marque. What a pity Fiat killed it.

@@23Piccolina I understand your angst even though I am an Indian and our Tata Group owns Landrover and Jaguar and indeed the Mahindra Group owns Pininfarina Design. The trick here is to infuse funds, belief, committment and support and management best practices and organizational skills without interfering with the design process, aesthetics, creativity and so on. So when you view these things with a pragmatic lens, it is better these great brands are owned by anyone at all, who will allow them to survive and grow. These great brands need to be saved from themselves!

This car is a IV series B20, model year 1954. The designer was not PininFarina, but Felice Mario Boano. The famous V6 engine was a masterpiece of Francesco De Virgilio, not Vittorio Jano's.

I agree with many other commenters that it would be nice to get some of the old style back where we get to meet the owners. That being said, this guy still does a way better job than most other car show presenters.

I feel a sense of nostalgia for those good old Lancia days
First saw one of these in 1959 at the Territorial Army barracks in Gorton Manchester. I was 8 and my eyes popped out of my head, never seen a more beautiful car and loved them ever since. Thanks for bringing back memories. Long time ago and now a long way away as I now live in Tasmania. Thanks again

Cloth seats were considered more up market than leather when this car was made. For instance, if you look at older coupe de ville limousines, the driver’s seat which was exposed to the elements was trimmed in leather. The owner’s enclosed cabin was trimmed in cloth, often wool, cotton or silk.

Beautiful car this, a real 1950s-highlight, truly the blueprint for modern GT-cars and so, one of the optimum examples to show what a great and unique car brand Lancia once was. Nice videography too, really suits this aurelia very well.

Nice to see a video on an Aurelia. I love mine to bits. Two things worth pointing out is that the Aurelia is not really designed for heel and toe, I wouldn’t risk it for the fear of damaging the clutch. Secondly the rationale for the fabric seats (West of England wool cloth) was that they hold you more firmly in place than a leather seat which in a hot country like Italy could prove slippery specially when one is sweating. Your comment about the gearbox being ok is in sharp contrast to Jay Leno’s, who in his video describes it as a precision instrument like a Swiss watch with a jewel like quality, of course I am biased and agree with him 😉. Good work though raising awareness of a very overlooked piece of motoring history.

I am a Lancia fanatic. Lancia made some of the most beautiful cars in the world, this is one of the prettiest. Lancia was on of the most innovative car companies and had a lot of firsts in car production.

They are beautiful cars, I came across a late series car on Malta in 1988, I intended to bring it to the UK. This was many years before Malta joined the EU, exporting cars off the island was extremely difficuilt and expensive back then, in the end I had to abandon the plan.I hope it was saved.
Had it been used for drag racing, modified with a mid-engined V8? If so, I remember the car, and it came from Malta to the UK and last time I saw it, someone had decided to return it to original spec, which even then was considered a monumental task as there was a lot more missing than present.

What ever was presented here before, Sam is a fantastic presenter, and this material is just excellent. Don`t compare formats. They are two different things.

I tow the brake and heel the throttle [ the same as Ken Block ], I had to learn to heal-toe and double de-clutch in my first car, 1972 mini 1,000 with blown synchros ;-)

While I like this video, and love Lancia, I too prefer the owner-driven format.
This car looks so good. It almost seems like the styling of the modern Bentley Continental GT was inspired by it.

My father had a series 4, but with the column change. Much, much later I owned a 6 series which I attemped to restore. However, being young and impecunious it wasnt to an exacting specification. I found that the clutch plate from a Healey 100 fitted it well enough because an original was far too expensive!! Ah, those days!
Front end looks identical to an early 50s Mercedes Benz e class. Cool!

Best part abt these cars is they were designed w parameters in mind and met them with precision over excess. They needed to be high speed gt cars so engines were designed with elasticity and were all good to hold 100 mph no more no less. More vulgar cars were meant to achieve the same thing with more horsepower. The interior was also brilliant. Basic car interior with the best possible components like zegna fabric. V interesting interpretation of luxury bc u still got rubber mats not like a bentley for example. And they were so ahead of everyone else even with less power and that’s why they win races. Cars could handle and drivers could maximize their potential. That can’t be said for most cars of the 50s.

The quality of the Lancia cloth was proverbial in Italy, and a true lancista would hardly have wished for anything else on the seats of a closed-body car. Besides, at equal seat geometry, cloth certainly beats leather or vinyl for seat of the pants adhesion.
5:20 Did you hear the V6?
Sam says he knew very little about the model until he did his research. From all his errors, he still doesn't know much about it. He says it's a Series 4, but that didn't arrive until 1954 and this is supposed to be a 1951 car (and looks it). He says it has 118 bhp, but the Series 1 only had 75; even the final 1957 Series 6, with a larger engine, only managed 112 (although that was a very respectable number for a sporting car of the period). Top speed was about 90, at a stretch, not 100. Back to school, Sam.
Wow. Yeah, the sound mix on this is absolutely awful. The car's fine, although it's interesting that there was as much in the film about what makes the car 'bad' (ok, sub-optimal) as what there is to like about it. I'm cool with both the more 'review' type films and the previous 'owner' films, although perhaps the former are a little more like what many other channels do and the latter more unique to this one. A mix would be nice - in both respects.

Beautiful classic car in a beautiful landscape! In which area was the film shot?
The wool cloth (the legendary high quality panno Lancia) as well as velvet was up to the 60s the most ambitious and comfortable finishing for car's tapestry. For instance in Coupé Napoleon coachbuild cars the front seats (for the driver) were in leather, while the back indoor seats were covered in wool velvet. From the 50/60s leather started to be used also for covered sports car as well, but that ain't a sport car: that's a Gran Turismo
It's a recent (30 years?) thing to consider leather as the most luxurious seat material. I'd take these high quality wool-fabric seats over worn out leather any day. A very unique thing about Lancia was their determination to never use carpets - always thick rubber mats on the floors. Even luxurious models like the Flaminia Coupes only ever had rubber mats.
@@srlane61 Sorry I have to contradict you. I am pretty sure that the last Lancia with rubber mats rather than carpets is the Aprilia from the 30/40s, as usual for that period. Aurelia and Flaminia all had carpets, even the sports and the GTs. If I'm not mistaken the small Appia as well, already from the MK1
@@suxpeppe thanks, that very interesting - my belief about the mats comes from talking with a Lancia expert in California who told me they never fitted carpets to Flaminias as we looked at a Flaminia with the thick ribbed mats. There were two other car there, one with carpets, one with mats and since then I've always assumed carpeted cars were a later owner's choice when the mats wore out. @@suxpeppe No, my 1953 Series 1 Appia has rubber mats throughout, as did my previous 1962 Series 3. The Pininfarina coupe had carpets throughout, but I believe the Vignale spider had mats.

I always loved the cinematography of the Petrolicous videos but it's always about a world of cars I know I will never be apart of. I'm not sure a lot of young car enthusaists will ever have enough money to own 95% of the stuff featured on petrolcious. maybe when they start making videos again it would be nice to see some owners with "cheap" classi cars that really aren't worth anything except to the owner . Beetles, MGB's, Minis all original if possible

Sadly, this video is proof that this channel has lost its magic. This car is an incredible car that so many have never seen before-you had a chance at real magic here...I saw my first Aurelia B20 at MM 2014 and I have been obsessed ever since. The format of the owner telling their story, set to music was so much better than this format. I suspect your subscriber numbers will continue to go down until you find a way to speak to real car people again...this is like a sad reboot of Victory by Design, which no one other than Alain de Cadenet should ever attempt to reproduce...we all get why ownership had to change, but come on

I like this format, with the owners it was always hit or miss. Sometimes they were great and had a real story to tell, but a lot of times they were boring rich people. This format focuses more on the car which I like. Music is too loud as everyone else in comments has already said
