My kid has used Warrior almost exclusively for 7 years. He never used the latest and greatest, usually the mid to high end sticks from 3 years prior since they were the ones on clearance at around the $120 price point.
I would love to see a ‘how it’s made’ video. What I notice about a ‘great stick’ is how few errors I make with picking up pucks in stride, ease of receiving a hard pass without it bouncing off, accuracy and ease of shot, how it ‘plays’ vs how light it is. Does it make me a more consistent player. I actually noticed my ccm ghost was easier to play with than even a jet speed ft6 pro (which I really liked) because of the blade. It’s like there is a shock absorber in the blade that makes the puck stick to the blade on a hard pass without much effort to control recoil. I bought the ghost because of this channel’s video, I play it because I keep getting solid play beyond the last stick I was using.

EDM vs VAN last night.. 2 sticks broke in the same location.
Crazy thing is, most NHL guys are using heavier more re-enforced version of top end sticks. I work at a hockey store in Pittsburgh. Gino came in to get a pair of retail Mach skates because his customs were delayed. It was around when the Ag5nt came out, and he picked it up. The first thing he mentioned was how light it was. We asked him how long he thought it would last him. With a straight face he goes “one shot”
When I look for a stick I consider the blade feel the most. Also something that is overlooked is how thin the blade is. I love the sync because it has a really thin blade which gives me a lot of control I feel

You don't need a lower weight than 375g (+/- 25g) release and feel are what they should be focusing on
resins are of massive importance, not just in terms of infusion and voids, but durability/britleness, micro-crack propogation and flex.

Lets get a stick designer on the show to provide insight on how a stick mold is used to produce multiple stick options. It'll be fibe types (glass, carbon) , fibre weaves (I'm seeing woven and uni), fibre stiffness, placement, resin, fibre cost, etc. All of this affects weight and feel of the stick. No magic per say, lets learn and get this demistified!!

We did it abiout 30 years ago when Jr inline worlds were in Kitchener. Really intersting.

I completely agree about the light sticks. I do not like when it weighs absolutely nothing. Feels like it’s going to break when you touch it. I switched to CCM about 3 years ago from Bauer/True and never looked back.
Really enjoyed this video. I'm getting back into hockey after having not played in about 16 years. My last stick I bought back then was an Easton Mako. I spent a lot of time looking into more modern sticks and went to a shop to get some of them in hands. I ended up getting a CCM Ribcor 7 on sale at a lower flex than I used back in the day (seems everything has shifted to lower flex!) and am amazed at how much nicer even this mid-range, 2 year old model performs compared to my higher end sticks from 15 years ago. I know the 7 Pro and now 8 Pro are "nicer", but I opted for the standard Ribcor 7 hoping for more durability at the expense of a very minimal difference in weight. So far, so good!

Same here, trigger 6 pro after 10+ years and dang, so nice. I used a higher flex when I was younger but whippy these days is so nice
My budget is $150-200, so 400g is about as light as I have used. I wasn't a fan of lighter weight sticks initially being that I tend to shoot better with 420g range sticks. But I always find myself leaving the heavier stick on the bench.
Blade feel and release are my other considerations. I started with Warrior Alpha/QRE sticks, so that's what I'm used to. Recently, having tried an FT5 Pro, the release has a very satisfying pop, but the blade feels a bit different, which I've been trying to get used to.

The most recent and last year Bauer sticks are purchased broken. My son broke somewhere 6-8 Bauer sticks from end of August to end of November. He moved over to the trigger 8 pro for the high school season started in early December. He never looked back to a Bauer stick since then. Not sure that he broke one of the Triggers yet. Used one for practice and the other for games.
It’d be great to see a list of where brands have their sticks produced.
I personally used a lot of stick growing up but it wasn’t until I held a MX3 for the first time in college, and I fell in love. The supreme line and the Tack line have been my favorite but so far the Ultrasonics have felt similar, I tried the 1x’s and hyperlites but they’re so flimsy… the Ultrasonics have been pretty decent surprisingly

I've been playing with the Sherwood top spec Rekker Legend Pro and TMP Pro. Absolutely love both sticks. They do perform completely different though. The Rekker Legend is an amazing passer and gets the shot off quick when you are down low and tight in the crease where as the TMP Pro really lets you load it up for blistering fast wrist shots. I am more of a sniper that roves around the top of the circles so the TMP Pro just feels right but that Rekker Legend with it's blade is so predictable for passing and snap shots. I highly recommend these sticks as they are much more affordable at the top spec level. Also as a side note, my 15 year old son won a hardest shot challenge in a tournament with his TMP pro with an 89mph shot. This TMP is that good.
Sherwood has that balance you are referring to. I only buy sticks on sale for myself and my son otherwise it will cost a fortune to play hockey for a season
I love my Crosby Prostock CCM Reckoners. Slightly heavier than stock sticks but SO much better for stick handling and feel.

Weight plays a role but not everything. Personally just broke 3 top teir sticks in the last week and @$350usd msrp, that is not sustainable nor confidence inspiring. Unfortunately they are out of warranty but durability is definitely a major concern. sticks have become more of a wear and tear item, they break down with usage over time and require replacement more frequently. Balance and value is where its at! Especially when you primary appeal should be the masses. Glad to hear there's been a trickle down effect with some mid range sticks, I will be exploring those options moving forward. Would love to see "how it's made", maybe you can also touch on some of the private lable or "grey market" sticks...I just ordered a few since my stick budget has gone through the roof and I just broke 3 back to back to back.
Lol I remember there being talk about this when the first Synergies came out in 2001. Haven't watched many NHL games lately but I'm sure the pursuit of ever lighter sticks has only amplified the problem.

I have a few warrior sticks and a CCM jetspeed FT6 pro no issues so far (touch wood).
I recently purchased a True Catalyst 9X3, broke in 2 games (no slap shots, no insane battles/slashes)
That was the final straw for me, never purchasing anything made my true again other. My custom skates started to fall apart within a few months, stock felt amazing whilst it lasted.
I’ll stick with CCM “Too good to be TRUE” has a new meaning.
Anything under 450g is perfect for me, as long as that “balance” is there, so I often use mid to upper tier sticks, never top spec. With that said, STX has been my go to for the last few years and have only had one break on me in that time.

Biggest issue of the mid range sticks vs top spec, for the most part is balance. They tend to be blade heavy
I work for a hockey retailer, and was talking to a sales rep for one of the major stick makers. He said they’ve decided that sticks have reached the point where they not only can’t - but also shouldn’t - get any lighter. Their strategic move is now continuing to develop materials and manufacturing methods to keep sticks at their current weight, but improving durability first and foremost.

Hi Chris, could you compare CCM Trigger 8 pro vs CCM Ribcor Team or CCM Jetspeed FT6 pro vs CCM Jetspeed Team hockey sticks? The Team sticks are half the price of the flagships and are a great value imo. Thx and keep the good work
Ok, so no posts yet about stick quality. I've started seeing issues appear on one my sticks. This is stick on stick type blunt force damage from general play , and lots pf fave offs. When I started sanding back the paint, i found a white filler, then, dry fibres only one layer (looked to be fibre glass), then a foam type of core. This is near the shaft to blade transition. I was astonished! A repair was easy but the quality was poor.
Would love to see something related related to why my blades keep cracking in the middle?
It does seem like they've messed with blades though. Blades chip and fray much more than they used to. It's maddening because that's the part of the stick that takes the most consistent impacts.
Have to say that I miss the ‘17 model year Bauer Nexus 1N. Had its own shape finally, the blade feel was great, and I love the flex profile. It was light enough but also durable enough for my style of play. What’s the closest thing to it these days?

The last several years it's been crazy. My son and I go to a lot of D1 college games, they break at least 6-8 sticks per game and generally always in the same place. Pretty easy to identify a problem, especially the break locations by brand.
They break maybe 1-2 per game 😂😂

I've been using a 85 flex mid kick stick for the longest time, I take all types of shots and never really broke sticks more the what would be considered normal but in the last year I went from 185 pounds to 200 pounds and I'm breaking sticks like crazy, I use mid price sticks like bauer vapor should I be buying higher priced sticks or do I need to change the flex I currently use?
I’d say go up in flex? The only thing I’ve noticed with “pro” level sticks is the lack of durability. You will sometimes get a little bit faster shot or even some better puck feel.. but I’ve found a step below offers all that just as well. Do you tend to lean on your stick more than you did before putting in some gains? We have a guy that skates with us who’s broken a few sticks because he tends to lean on his sticks a lot. Hope you find what works!
The feel and how it performance is what really matters. The issue i have is that you cant find or get sticks that is made 3 years back. Bauer Nexus geo is a wounderful stick that also have durability but sadley i cant find it any more.
I had a true catalyst. I loved it, but it broke after 2 months of playing inline hickey. Broke in a strange place as well, at the top not the blade end.
How about reviews on non major brands like allblack hockey sticks, or STX?

My only choosing factor so far has been availability and price. It would be very interesting to try many sticks and being able to choose afterwards, but how do you do that?

I prefer a 335g to 345g like the ag5nt or proto R … anything lighter like the true project X the grip was off and I lost the handle a few times
Alot of truth said on this video. This new meta amongst hockey players to drop their flexes as far as possible at the cost of stick strength doesnt help either tho.
Unfortunately weight and balance often go together. Before I found a blackout model my players liked, I was trying very hard to find a suitable mid range stick when Bauer had quit making their excellent shift pro sticks while focusing on AGENT. Unfortunately every mid-range bauer stick I could find was not only heavier, they were ALL extremely poorly balanced and felt like they were badly blade-heavy. My older player could tell right away picking up a stick whether it was garbage or not, just on balance. And every single bauer mid and lower stick available at the time was horribly balanced. The excellent and reasonably priced shift pro sticks are back in (some) shops but we've already switched to the hockeystickman blackouts and my players are quite happy with them because they're well balanced, and I'm happy with them because they're 1/3 the price of high end sticks with the same balance and feel.
True does a good job at the “mid” range sticks
I had great feeling with True sticks but didn't last long, I really prefer Sherwood sticks.

I primarily used wood sticks through most of my life. The only stick that i find currently feels very balanced in my hand is Bauer. True is to light, warrior seems blade heavy,
I use Bauer sticks regularly too.
IMO the sticks which I think have the best feel are, in no particular order, Bauer, CCM, and Sherwood
Warrior sticks feel way too stiff and definitely blade heavy! That’s a good way to describe them. Stick wise I definitely have had better luck with Bauer over others but that excludes the “Proto R” that stick breaks way too easy! I now stay away from lighter sticks. 400g is about the lowest I will go.
The Nexus Geo is definitely an all time favorite. The Synch isn’t bad either. The Geo is definitely better though in my opinion.

Hockey is sadly pushing itself to the point of no return on cost. The economics of the monopolization of the industry to 2-3 main players pushes prices higher with less competition. Meanwhile hockey manufactures are also in a tough position to continue to be profitable for repeat purchases. I still skate on vapor 10s…and for my outdoor stick I’m still sporting a Christian diamondlite shaft 😂

I prefer a little heavier stick as it is, I find the shot becomes more powerful because of the weight behind it. Granted I'm a defenseman so this shouldn't surprise anyone.

Beside the curve (see below), I'm looking for balanced stick with quick release I don't really care about the weight.
I tend use less and less tape when stick have good grip in the shaft and when the blade is well made. I have been lucky to put my hand on a ASV Pro for nothing the blade is perfect and there's no need for tape which reduce the weight of my stick 😁
(Well for the ASV Pro the stick is already super light)
One thing very important to me is the curve... I love p5/p02/p20/ps155 know as the Lindstrom but this specific curve is really hard to find. I buy many Sherwood stick for this reason they have that curve and the price is below 120€ and the overall quality is good for the price.

I still use my vflex 95 easton aluminum and clean up with it worked for gretski too i really dont like the feel of these new sticks atall i know for fact i perform better with my easton

I agree with you 1000% I am a HUGE fan of ALL BLACK HOCKEY STICKS!! They are the cheapest and best quality sticks for the price that I have ever played with!! Before ABHS, my favorite stick for roller is the Verbero Mercury Pure Carbon and I still have 2 from a sale they had years back.. I don’t see me dropping anywhere over 150 for sticks especially cuz I have to pay shipping to Hawaii.. ABHS offers a lighter option as well that in my eyes takes the leader position for best bang for your buck!! 😎🤙

Sticks are getting so much more pricier so I just get something with the flex, length, and curve I want. Don't care about weight. I'm not going to throw down half a G and hope it doesn't break because sooner or later it will. $100-$150 range in price is where I sit at.
It’s nothing compared to sticks breaking around 2002-2005 with sticks getting to get under 400 grams. They are way tougher than they used to be. Back then each manufacturer had their weekness.

I look for cost! I don't even care about brand. I recently picked up some STX for $50 and they work great. Can't tell the difference between that and my CCM Jetspeed

Feels that hockey brands are going the “anti-ageing cream” path… a bunch of funky meaningless names for the sticks, with “faster shot”, “faster release”, “harder shot”…. Feels gimmicky and incredible untrustworrthy

They can probably play with the shape of the stick to gain strength
To be honest I think the industry doesn't want anybody to play this sport there's not enough ice arenas in my area to handle the amount of people that would like to play and I think they're to a certain degree trying to price themselves out of the market so they don't have to cater to such a large market anti-business I think that's the route that they're going

As someone who was a teenager playing in the early 2000's where compositie sticks were really coming into their stride - i broke a huge variety of sticks ( Nike Apollo II, Vapor VI, X, Easton Synergy ST, Vapor XXX Lite, Stealth S15 and S17, NB One90, One95, more Synergy St's etc.)
None came as close in durability to my mid-range Warrior sticks. Primarily the "Swizzle" which was an absolute MBT.
I feel like sticks breaking often is nothing new and ive been questioning why reliability has never REALLY seemed to be a priority for the big dogs of hockey. Surely having your top-end products constantly breaking on live TV cant be excusable simply because the players are at the top of their game.
Anyway, bring back the Warrior Swizzle with that nasty Draper curve and ill buy a whole rack of them
It's interesting to see players buyer habits. Doesn't seem easy to pull players away from expensive sticks. It's like the watch game. people are happy to place brand and model over practicality
wish more people would consider repairing their high end carbon/composite sticks than chucking it in a landfill. These are everlasting trash items that will not break down for eons. If a carbon bike frame can be fixed to the point of being safe to be ridden on the road at high speed, we can certainly put trust in stick repair.

CCM is the stick king it’s not even close, warrior is second but they are nowhere near CCM. Bauer make literally the worst sticks they never live up to the hype or feel, power, the release and the durability anything.
Here is my big take on sticks… if you have used a composite stick for over 8 months… it may not be in two pieces but it is broken. It has internal cracks and it has lost its pop and feel

In short, I would say no. A heavier stick especially when in practice, gives you better strength. I find an extremely light stick feels like you have no control especially in your follow through.
And I prefer wooden sticks, so, I may be slightly biased. But I will make a point that Al McInnis used wooden sticks, because that's what they had at the time. And I will say he had the hardest shot in history. Yes, his shot speed was beaten, BUT it was beaten by a carbon fibre and barely. So, if Al McInnis was in his prime today using the sticks used now, do the math.
In my opinion when modern technology is becoming a bigger problem, we need to take a step back and go back to the basics.
yes after every shift sticks should pass thru an X-ray machine REEL QUIK EH! for cracks

most sticks break due to either something hitting it on the side, like another stick and or poor shot mechanics usually in a slap shot. which do happen quite often when anyone is rushing to slap the puck. a lot of people ALWAYS have poor slap shot mechanics SO their sticks are never gonna last long. a have a few sticks that so called have poor durability that have lasted me a few seasons. not because i am so great, but because i dont take faceoffs. i dont slash other peoples sticks and i only shoot wrist shots. so if you want your sticks to last long, be a floater like me. lol.
They are designed to break this keeps them in business. They don't want them to have longevity.
Sherwood TMP Pro have the best durability as of late. I pray they dont change. So, I shifted from Bauer because I can't afford to keep buying new sticks. The Nexus was great but is now an old model and not as available.
Not designed to break. They just focused on the wrong key elements (weight reduction)
Follow up to my other statement golf has done it to themselves also price themselves out of the market you wonder why golf courses are closing left and right
I think pro hockey players and amateur players need to back to using wood hockey sticks because they are 8 times more strong then composite ones . I think the pro hockey leagues need to requie players to use wood hockey sticks.
