the 996 didn´t replace the 964. there was the gorgeous 993 in between which was the last air cooled 911.

The older I get, the better the 996 looks to me. In the era of minimalism full of sharp cuts and edges, I appreciate those goofy round happy shapes more and more. The body looks really nice and that's gotta be the best rim choice possible for this car, it just looks so matchy and complete all together. I also think it was perfect weather conditions for the shoot of this spec. I'm gonna end it here because the more I think about particular parts of it that I like, the more I fall in love with it. Genuinely thank you for showing this one, that was super fun to watch.
porsches 911 from late 90s and early 2000s are probably my favorites
The 996 is finally having its moment. The curves, headlights, even that interior is retro-futuristic. Love it!
Props for doing the drive top down in 38 degrees. That's cold. Also, a lesson here-- always spec convertibles with heated seats and steering wheels. I optioned both in my 718 Spyder and, even in the mid-Atlantic climate, can get (nearly) 365 day top down driving.... which is how that car should always be driven.
I've always loved this body-style. The simplicity and curves are just magnificent.

I was of the age where I missed the 993 due to being too young, but the 996 and the internet configurator and being in high school & college… this was the Porsche I wanted from being a young adult. Now that I can theoretically afford one, would love to grab one someday.

996's are my favorite. My friends father bought a new Yellow 911 Turbo back in 2001 and he gave me a ride in it. It was the first time I've ever been in a fast car and it was glorious. It also was one of the most comfortable vehicles I've ever sat in. The seats were surprisingly super super comfortable. My favorite 911 by far.
The 996 will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks to playing and replaying over and over nfs Porsche unleashed.
That was such a neat concept for a game, I wish somebody would run with that concept today.

I drove my first 996 last week! Happened to be a cab Carrera with the 6 speed; I totally agree with your point that the clutch is tactile with a bunch of feedback even without added throttle response. Great vid!

I think the 996 is finally coming into its appreciation era, especially the C4S! From the rear end, it's probably the best looking 911 ever.
Easily, that long bar taillight and sweeping curves just does something to me. Long live the 996.

My takeaway on the 996 is the price is amazing, the drive is amazing, the styling has grown on me and the M96 motor might be less reliable but it sounds better than the DFI motors in the 997.2.
Favorite generation of 911. Controversial opinion for some, I'm sure, but if you know, you know. Perfect mix of rugged old style Porsche and modern drivability. 997 is awesome as well, especially the 997.2, but the vibes of the 996 have never been replicated.
Convertibles in the winter are a blast. Just had my E46 M3 top-down in the snow in Maine... perhaps the best way to enjoy that cold-air added power.
I had a 996 4S and that was the best-sounding, most fun engine out of all the other 911's I had (996 Turbo and 992 T). The top-down enhance the driving experience, especially after the fisker mod. I'll buy one of these one day if a good one comes up!! You can do a reversible 2WD conversion by removing the front drivetrain. If it has bore scoring, I wouldn't hesitate to get it rebuilt to 3.8L for ~25k!!
996!😍 Neighbor across the street from us growing up had one in pretty much this spec but a coupe and let me sit in it as a wee lil toddler, and it was that moment when the car bug bit me!
I have one of these with the sport exhaust and holy moly is it amazing. Even after driving more modern sports cars I always love stepping back into the 996 C4S. Great video!
Good on you! When I was young my dad would take me on a winter drive to the mountains with our 1963 MGA top down heater blasting and it was a ball. Now I do the same thing with my 996 C4s cabriolet with my grandchildren.
I like the car, but I love the drive. I grew up in Acton and moved halfway across the country 30 years ago. The drive around Nagog Hill Rd brought back lots of fond memories as I lived in one of those neighborhoods. Thanks for posting!

This video was so cool, i love that car and the sound is amazing. I've been delaying buying myself a sport car because i don't know what to get between top-down fun, engine noise right to your ears, or the structural rigidity and sexiness of a coupe.

986\996 are aging very well, IMO, and when properly maintain still drive and handle wonderfully. I am biased, though.
Very cool (literally)! That one is really nicely specced (full leather, white gauges, aero stuff). I miss my 2000 996, but I don't miss the : leaking RMS, 2nd gear pop out issue, replacing the leaking coolant tank. Etc.
Major props to you for driving with the top down in January in New England! The only way this would have been more New England was if you had a Dunks iced coffee in the cup holder. 😀

Most under appreciated car of all time. My dad has a C2 manual coupe with a slight exhaust mod and it sings! 997 too soft and 993 is overrated IMO.

Are these fried egg headlamps? I thought it was pre-facelift style that was the fried egg, with amber turn signal doing runny yolk thing.
Just an observation, it looks like the rearview mirror is shared out of my car (2005 Acura TL).

the cabrio looks great here, but I can't say I'm a big fan of the current 992 cabrio
That is not a factory aerokit. That's a GT2-style decklid, aerokit looks much different. Front lip is an aerokit-style lip, though it's not exactly right as it has an almost gurney at the bottom of it that's incorrect.

Sorry Ted, but they are not the fried egg headlights, which came on the 996.1. These headlights are the 996.2 ones, the same as those on the turbo. Common mistake.
.1 is runny egg, .2 is fried

They are tightly bolted together and the interiors are rattle free. The design is what gets everyone but most of the design language from this era was meh anyway from a lot of auto makers. I can't recall a single interior that is stunning from this period.

If it's top comes off, it should have been designed from the ground-up as such, ie. S2000, MX5. Otherwise, leave it as a coupé.
996 replaced the 993, not the 964.

Those are not the fried egg headlights! They're the 996.2 headlights same as on the turbo.
These cars would benefit greatly from modern headlights and tail lights. There must be an aftermarket option available
