Another hard pill to swallow : not every group members are best friends and love each other! I mean there are some groups that are genuine best friends and have a strong bond that is built over time, but not all group like that.
It's just a little bit weird to me when a people comments on a reality show about
"member A is being left out by the other members"
and then a whole bunch of people defend the other members by saying something like
"shut up! The other members wouldn't leave him/her out because they love each other. You just commented something like that because you don't know how much they love each other!"
Well the reality is you yourself also don't know 'how much they love each other' because the truth is, they can try to murder each other while they're sleeping and still acts like a longlast besties infront of the camera.

I AGREE. For example, when Soobin (omg love him) was talking about how he isn't good at math and doesn't like it on that one live stream, everyone was like "omg so relatable wow an idol bad at a subject in school." Like girl, did you just think that all idols aced every subject? Personally, math is the only subject I was good at in school and English class too. Him being bad at math isn't relatable to me personally because I'm actually really good at it and every time I tell someone that, they say "well not everyone is good at it." I know that but not everyone is bad at it. See how it works? An idol being bad at something doesn't suddenly make them human. They're a human to begin with and shouldn't have to have hardships for you to realize that.

I really agree with the idea that kpop was designed to make people obsessed. I see videos all the time of idols flirting with fans during fansigns. You can not tell me these idols are genuinely interested in their fans, my guess is they do it to make fans feel special so they will continue to try to win fansign tickets. It’s honestly kind of sad how much people buy into the idea of having a chance with their idol.

Like you take these conventionally attractive idols who (If their company is lucky) can dance/rap/sing well, and they're instructed to have that idol persona (likable, cute, friendly). They also have to do fanservice too. So it's like these companies strategically design an idol's image to be as desirable as possible so that people become obsessed and spend as much money as possible.

As a moomoo and hwasa lover, I 100% agree. Hwasa is a queen overall, but many many many idols have broken stereotypes even more than hwasa in some cases. Idols like amber and moonbyul for example. Hwasa indeed just does her own thing and couldn't care less what people say. She makes her own standard as she said. To be fair, Amber and Moonbyul are always referred to beautiful and were never looked down on for being tomboys. "Girl-crush" is an old concept in kpop that very few female idols have the privilege to achieve. Amber was actually scouted in the middle of the street by SM's staff *because* another famous Korean singer from the 80's/90's had the tomboy look and was really famous for it. This was never a broken stereotype to begin with. Koreans loved it and still do.
Unlike them, Hwasa was insulted and shunned by a good number of people for having curvy hips unlike other idols. I'm not saying that there aren't idols who don't fit the standard and broke the stereotypes, because there are. Such as Bobby from iKON for his look and who showed everyone that idols can rap and actually win at a rapping competition, or Jooheon from Monsta X who people actually saw him as scary for his looks and intense rapping and even certain staff within his company actually told him to change back then.

I love Kpop. But I'll never willingly refer to myself as a _"stan."_ The word's origin is undeniably negative, and some _(quite a lot)_ of these fandoms are downright insufferable and gatekeep like they're getting paid to do so. I can support the artists and groups that I like, and enjoy the music without obsessing to a mentally unstable point and acting as if all the idols I like personally owe me the world or some shit, and having a breakdown when finding out they date. I've never encountered a more disgusting, resentful, delusional, malicious, and simultaneously childish fandom than that of Kpop. So many aspects of it are bizarre to me, I'll never be down with labeling myself as a _"stan."_

There were many British acts that came after the Beatles that did not surpass them regarding charting or awards but were still considered very successful (such as the Rolling Stones, the Who, a bunch of others) and produced music in very different ways. A lot of people are now paying more attention to Korean art of all kinds because of the impressive art produced by BTS. Also, she didn't fight in the trenches of CUBE and various variety shows just to allow others to benefit from her work. I'm a Neverland, and I know that Miyeon and Minnie are really popular vocally. But I'm sorry, if she just wrote for them, not only would it hurt herself, but it'd hurt the others too. And I'm also sorry, but no one in that group is as versatile as Soyeon, and Yuqi is my bias. The girl is one of the best dancers in the group, she can sing with the best of them, her stage presence is on another level, and oh yeah, she's the best rapper of this generation, while she writes/produces everything. You should know by now if you claim yourself as neverland, that gidle success has A LOT TO DO WITH THE COLOR OF THE GROUP. soyeon is genius, she is capable of creating songs that fix her members. What makes her song great is the members themselves, bcs she is inspired by them like she always said.
You saying things as if soyeon doesn't need the other members is one incredible dumbest thing i read about soyeon. Just like u want so much respect for soyeon, u should give the same amount of respect to other members too. Minnie is popular vocally for reason, and SOYEON RECOGNIZED THAT REASON SO SHE KEPT HER CLOSE SO CUBE DEBUT HER WITH THAT GIRL. Obviously she knew long before that Minnie is going to ace the team vocally, and that deserves respect.

As someone who has been in love with kpop since first gen, I agree with most of these opinions, but there are two things that I think are important to point out are:
    1) In regards to Hwasa breaking stereotypes, she is breaking expectations Koreans have for OTHER KOREANS. Sure they might watch nekkid Americans/westerners all the time, but that is considered okay because they're of a different culture. Korean culture is still predominantly conservative and has a very strong group mentality that creates a lot of social pressure to conform to certain characteristics and stereotypes, and it's taken people like Hwasa (and all the other "rulebreakers" who came before her, including Lee hyori, CL, etc) to slowly open the public mindset about how women, especially, should act and dress. Despite this, showing showing cleavage still means you're a slut in Korea, whereas showing your entire leg is totally fine lol.
    2) In regards to BTS, sure they might not have made "success" more accessible for others, but I think they have unarguably changed the mindset that Asian's are not marketable, or desirable in the Western entertainment sphere. As you said, marketing, moreso than talent, is king in entertainment, and there is a very distinct reason why, to this day, the only successful Asian figures in the Western entertainment business are mainly comedic or martial arts actors despite there being a plethora of talented Asian actors and singers. Male kpop groups as a whole generally challenge the Western ideal of what it is to be manly, and the wild success of BTS has shown that the negative stereotypes typically assigned to Asian men, including femininity, can be incredibly desireable. Given this, and the fact that so many previous kpop groups and soloists have failed to do this previously, I do think they've paved a way for more Asians to enter the entertainment space and actually be accepted, if not welcomed.

Every group has helped paved the way. Like with Hwasa she's paving the way for other female artists. I agree that they made have changed the mindset of western entertainment industry about asians. However, when people say 'bts paved the way' i still want to slap them... Because every group paves a way, or 'helps' pave a way. BTS wouldn't be bts if it was for groups like bigbang and girls generation. So it sucks that people aren't giving more credit to other groups just because all they know is BTS and their success.

@@TheNightxSky Yeah I definitely agree but that's a never-ending rabbit hole since you could argue that whoever created music eons ago paved the way. Certain groups definitely leave a bigger mark and you have to give credit where it is due. Even when BigBang and GG hit it HUGE a couple kpop generations back (not to mention all the big names that came before them like seotaji, JYP, HOT, GOD, SES, etc), they were all anyone talked about and articles about they were "paving the way" were all over the place. Whoever is the most popular group at a certain point in time obtains that status because they're doing something different/paving the way in a particularly noticeable way. BTS is simply at the pinnacle of that for this current wave of kpop since it's been near impossible to have sustained Western success as an Asian musician (even as an Asian American). It's absolutely guaranteed that in another 10-20 years, some other group will be "paving the way."

Then Armys tend to use it was a way to belittle other groups and other fandoms by being like 'but bts paved the way' and I hate it. I'm not denying that BTS hasn't made huge waves, and that's great. My responce to you opinions:
    1. I couldn't agree more some idols don't even care about being "woke" as long as you belive they're "woke"
    2. Exactly! Take a group like E'last for example, they are so talented and their choreos are magnificent but the marketing isn't really there so they aren't even close to being popular.
    3. You kinda said what i thought about so I don't have anything to say.
4.True idols could be doing some really nasty stuff (as well as companys) but we would never know.
5.When people say "cahrting doesn't matter" I just want to slap them in the face bc if you want your favs to not disband charting does matter.
6 & 7 I completely agree and have othing to say on it.
8.Even tho BH has BTS who are supper popular an TXT who are semi-popular it's nothing compared to what the actual big3 has done in th past few decades.
    9. Don't have anything to say you are completely correct.
    10. How can your favs go to militay and you not expect them to change? It's not like they're robots with set personalities.
11-19. Again I completely agree and have nothing to say.
    20. I agree they paved the way for kpop in general to be more popular but each and every group has to pave their own way. i also don't think anybody any time soon is going t be able to pass BTS's success or even get close to it.
    21. I kinda agree even though ITZY are one of my ult ggs i feel like if their concept wasn't selfconfidence/self love they wouldn't be as popular. Most of their bsides are kinda like "fillers"? and if they weren't from big3 you're right they wouldn't be as popular.
And the stage presence is mediocer.
    22. This isn't related but I think their survival show should've ben called 18 bc 18 divided by 2 is 9 so 9 + 9 (twice) it would more sense idk.
    23. I don't have anything to say bc I don't know much about the bs scandal.
    24 & 25 I agree
    26. I'm not really into Somi that much but stream wywf ig.

About BTS paving the way, you mentioned how “it’s making it harder for other groups to be considered successful” while at the same time admitting that they made K-Pop more popular. Isn’t that also paving the way by your definition and the overall definition? They made it easier for other K-pop groups to be *known* worldwide. Of course it’s harder for them to be considered successful now because of the “BTS standard” (whatever that means, and I say this as an ARMY), but like you mentioned, there’s no denying BTS made K-Pop more popular internationally. I definitely think groups pave their own success, and I hate when ARMY diminishes the efforts of another group and says it’s all because of BTS. In some ways, they did pave the way, in others, they didn’t.

(minus the foreign members in their group, but still… that barely counts😓). I don’t think koreans (or any other country with little diversity) ever bother to learn about different races and cultures bc they simply don’t feel the need to. Of course BTS has made it harder for everyone to be the next big thing, because they have reached the top and now everyone's success is measured RELATIVE to theirs. What you're talking about is not paving the way but setting the standard, or setting the bar for success. Just because the environment to succeed has become harsher, more competitive, and more challenging, that doesn't mean people didn't benefit from them in sheer numbers.
Look at all the big names of the hallyu way. The massive success of Korean historical dramas, mainly Dae Jang-Geum, made people interested in Korean history and traditions. The massive success of a Korean meme song, Gangnam Style put Kpop on the radar of international listeners (yes we had international Kpop fans before, but most of them were Japan's fans who got to know Kpop through the likes of BoA and Kpop groups like TVXQ and SNSD promoting in Japan). And then there's BTS (and other big names too, I'm not saying it's all their work only), and I don't think I have to explain their impact on Korea's entertainment industry, Korea's tourism, Korea's GDP, people talking about Korea outside of Samsung, LG and Hyundai related topics... Not just that, but if I had a dollar for each person I've heard say "Yeah I started out as an Army but then I discovered / moved on to other groups" I'd have a fortune. The truth is, thanks to big names of the hallyu wave, the AMOUNT of people interested in South Korea blew up, and more people means more customers, more views, more $$$. I understand that you might also need to invest more to stay in competition in this new environment. But investing 70$ to earn 100$ and have 30$ profit is still less then investing 900$ to earn 1000$ and having a 100$ profit. You get what I mean?
As for the entrepreneur example, to make this analogy parallel with what I've been trying to tell you: People getting jobs due to a talented entrepreneur, coming out of poverty and becoming potentially relatively successful entrepreneurs, is the same as benefitting from BTS in terms of numbers, so in that sense they paved the way, but that entrepreneur SET THE BAR high for someone to have the same or even bigger impact on the community as he had, or in your words, the same success.
In the end, you could say we're just arguing over words and what they mean, and in that sense, I have to say, the whole arguement around whether BTS paved or not is stupid, because all this does is make people take sides and completely discredit the other.

The one where you said "Hwasa isn't the queen of breaking stereotypes", i strongly disagree with. Yes, people in sk like in a lot of other conservative asian countries might consume american music and media and even worship the usa as a whole but even then Hwasa wearing shorts and thigh-highs was so shocking because she wasn't american. She wasn't the white woman in american mvs walking around in bikinis, she didn't have the upbringing of someone born in the west. It was so shocking simply because she was from sk. Its the same in India, white people in music videos walking around topless is okay until someone who is actually indian and isn't a celebrity does it.

I agree that artists who take part in the production of their music/art deserve more respect and recognition. In regards to this, I hope more people appreciate SEVENTEEN as a self producing group.
SEVENTEEN has always had the SELF-PRODUCING title ever since they were rookies. WOOZI - svt's vocal leader, is also seventeen's main producer, composer and lyricist. He always had a hand in 99% of all Seventeen's discography since debut (he had also written songs for other idols).Woozi has always been Seventeen's rock and they will never be what they are today if not for him. Also, all the other members had also helped in lyrics composition (most especially hiphop unit) and composition.
Moreover, SVT's performance unit(mostly HOSHI), also helps in making their choreographies. Because of this, their "vision" and ideas are always reflected during performances thru dance moves, props and body language (sign language)
    Special mentions:
*Seventeen's Wonwoo and Mingyu made two special videos in which they themselves videographed, edited, directed and produced.
*Mingyu had also made a svt magazine and designed some merch.
Of course there are a lot of people who had (and continually) helped them in their craft like Bumzu, Primsfilter, their dance teachers and choreography team and others whom Seventeen always expressed they thanks to.
Whooo💨.To emphasize my point, again, I hope people respect and recognize Seventeen for what they are.... a SELF-PRODUCING GROUP. It is acknowledged by the Kpop industry and I (personally) believe that SVT are the one that made 'self-producing' a bigger deal and asset in kpop
Btw, I don't mean to throw shade to anyone. And I certainly don't mean to discredit other self-producing idols. Thanks for reading my long ass comment. Have a good day!

We were doing so well until you talked about Hwasa- don't get me wrong, I don't think she's THE QUEEN of breaking stereotypes, but it must be so easy as an American to sit there and assume that doing what is perceived as "typically American things" is easy for women in Korea. The amount of backlash Hwasa has received for being herself is immense. She may be doing something that's unremarkable in America, but it's extremely significant in Korea because the culture is different. What she's doing is questioning a lot of norms and expectations in a terribly misogynistic, colorist society- the context makes all the difference and the way you just dismissed that was disrespectful and untrue. A Korean doing that is that much more scandalous to a Korean audience. And she doesn't just dress a certain way- that's again reducing what she is to her appearance. She writes, produces, and has a personality that's rare to see among female kpop idols because the cost of publicly displaying that personality is too great. So yeah, she has balls. She's broken a heck lot of stereotypes. Like many other women before her, and in her time as well. Don't dismiss the struggles and wins of female celebrities in another culture because they seem normal in yours.

korean citizens came up with it and started using it for bts specifically. it’s crazy how y’all have been arguing about this topic for years but in the end, it will always start and end with bts because the truth is that they are the ones who paved the way for kpop. i think a lot of you are confused on what the phrase ‘paved the way’ means. it’s not about who came first or who started kpop, it’s about who made it possible for your faves to get the opportunities that they could only dream of. bts are the reason why other groups are getting invited to american shows, they’re the reason why other groups can now get nominated on new kpop categories on award shows like the VMA’s and PCA’s, they’re the reason why your faves albums are being sold at Target and Amazon, they are the reason why kpop is so recognized and popular today, etc. every time we witness bts achieving something, a few months to a year later you’ll see other kpop groups following in their footsteps trying to seek for the same thing. that’s what paving the way means. y’all can say whatever y’all want but at the end of the day, your opinions really don’t matter in the slightest because impact doesn’t lie. if your faves can acknowledge it and give credit where credit is due, then so can y’all.

Exactly! “Paved the way” implies that more groups are breaking into the international market because of BTS. There are three Korean music acts that are internationally known: BTS, Psy and Blackpink. Psy became popular waaay before BTS broke into the international seen and Blackpink paved their own way. BTS has made their own success and now any other KPop group is going to be compared to them. Look at TXT. They were on an interview with some dumb news show and the first thing the host asked was “Are they the next BTS?” Same with girl groups and Blackpink. They aren’t opening up the floodgates for other acts. They definitely brought more attention to KPop as a whole genre. However, KPop is still considered to be a novelty. Locals still don’t respect KPop. And finally, look at Latin Pop. You could say that Luis Fonsi “paved the way” for that genre after his big hits “Despacito” with Justin Bieber and “Échame La Culpa” by Demi Lovato. But after 2017/2018, you almost never here any Latin Music in mainstream Western radio stations and streaming services. BTS and Blackpink are successful. But what happens when their momentum declines? I don’t see other KPop groups taking that place because the world will move onto the next “in thing”. Yes, both groups have broken barriers and helped to popularize KPop far beyond where it would be now without them. However, it hasn’t become a main staple in the world and I don’t see a lot of groups following them up and demonstrating even remotely similar levels of success. So yeah, I hate the phrase “BTS paved the way”. I love BTS, they’re amazingly talented and have awesome music! And Blackpink is the revolution! But neither group is currently opening doors for the entire genre of KPop as opposed to just for themselves.

How is that selfish? She literally patterns the lyrics for her team. And it is a fact that ShuHua requested to have less lines because of how she was criticized for her pronunciation. Wonder girls and EXO promoted in the U.S music industry but couldn't make it. The big 3 of kpop tried their best to try entering their groups for mainstream success. The category for Kpop wasn't even there in one of the biggest music shows, the VMA, before BTS came. And like I said about the views, the views were far less as compared to the views on kpop music videos these days. Kpop groups and companies could only dream of getting in the billboard top 200 and 100, and these days groups are trying for nominations at the freakin GRAMMYS without even winning a major music award show. It is BECAUSE of Bts that so many people become kpop fans and explore different groups. A rookie group like lesserafim got their antifragile album in the top 200 BB. Some points are valid, but did strongly disagree on BTS making generic music, as you’ve point out art has different paths, why would you call something generic when their discography spans different genres with strong messages that everyone can relate too.

What paved the way for kpop was the internet, CZcams to be specific. Think about how different kpop would be if there was no CZcams. Think about how different BTS would be if there was no CZcams. BTS made kpop more widely known just like Bigbang, 2ne1 and SNSD before them, BUT, they all have one overarching thing in common and that is CZcams.

51:24 Generally speaking, I feel like main dancers in K-Pop girl groups do not have the same opportunity as the boy groups in showcasing the full range of their dancing abilities. Like their movements are always bounded within girl crush, sexy, or cute vibes. I hope to see more performances like Loona's Cherry Bomb cover and Seulgi & Irene's Naughty. Or maybe I just haven't encountered enough girl groups to say so?

I feel like ppl don’t understand what BTS paved the way actually means its doesn’t mean BTS were the first kpop group to chart on billboard or even promote in America when Armies say BTS paved the way we mean it as BTS paved the way for kpop groups and asian artists in general to be taken seriously by western market they paved the way for groups to be signed to America labels and get properly promoted in America groups like Blackpink,NCT 127,Monsta X,TXT,Ateez,Twice,Stray Kids and the list goes on and on western kpop fans are the only ones who have an issue with ppl saying BTS paved the way even Koreans say this daily and every Korean agrees

    • @ethanol4367

But they aren't, coming from an nctzen. NCT 127 going to America was one of the experiences for the fandom. On the street when they were walking, people were making racist remarks and calling them BTS while laughing at them, and their fans had to correct these people. When they went on radio shows, no one actually respected them and just called them a BTS copy group. They even said their name was stupid and BTS was better. Then Knetizens protested their promotion and the superhuman album did bad since they were in America. While I'm not diminishing their accomplishments or what they sis, they definitely really didn't help these artists, especially boy groups. I mean they don't even do research that one of the members was born and raised in Chicago and speak English. That's just how I feel, but I think I agree with OP more, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

You are clearly despising bts success. You said you didnt ask them them to pave the way for the artist. Neither they didn't work hard just to pave the way for others but to be successful themselves .kpop is clearly divided to era before bts beacme successful and era after bts became successful. Even if other idols just arent getting as famous as bts. Kpop got that big recognition after they attended their first western music award show in 2017. Psy gangnam style became popular and it was the only song he got attention from the whole world. Then he dissapeared. Wonder girls got charted in the bb hot 100 chart and there were no signs of them in that chart. But bts started charting in the bbhot 100 from dna. And through out the started gradually going higher and higher in the charts with their new songs. Only bts made progress in the western music industry while others just came and disappeared to thin air. And right after bts only kpop got popular and other artist are started to get nominating in the western music award shows and charts. Also the kpop category was created aftr bts got popular. This wasnt even a category before bts got fame. I say again you are clearly jealous of bts success cz your faves cant beat them. They get right into the spotlight nowadays but bts waited 2 years for a music win in a domestic show. They nearly disbanded. If bts havent got charted in the bb100 or didnt visit the ama or bbmas. Your faves only would be popular in asia. Even in asia they wouldnt be that popular. Starting from this year only a lot of kpop artists are ariving at a western music award show. And its vmas. Even blackpink the 2nd most popular group got awards only in vmas. Even if you cant agree on this you just hate bts.
