One thing that blew my mind is that gamblin actually recommends using a mixture of alkyd and oms to oil out a painting before varnishing to eliminate uneven varnishing. I’ve tried it and it works but I imagine you’re right, that the oiled out alkyd layer would be more or less permanent. perhaps being under the varnish layer it doesn’t matter too much but for sure you wouldn’t be able to get down to the oil itself.

I have had to redo two paintings because of the Gamblin Gamvar “sinking” in and causing a horrible finish. It’s not recommended to do a second coat because of reactivating the first layer. I have researched all day for a solution, and I came across the Gamblin video recommending oiling out with the Galkyd formula. I need to find a solution, either do that or try to find another brand of quick drying varnish. What have you decided to do?

@@ascricco987 I have both used the oiling out with galkyd, and also have experimented with a second layer of gamvar. They oiled out galkyd layer did do the trick but I'm not sure how it will hold up to yellowing in the long term. I've been hearing people talk about eliminating certain pigments from their pallete which cause sinking in, such as Burnt Umber. I don't use burnt umber as much and i have noticed my paintings don't have as much sinking in as they used to.

🎨Oh my gosh Bill, 😀 this is SO funny !! I was looking through some you tube channels -- mostly a few acrylic painters -- and my sub list.
I thought about you -- my favorite contemporary artist.
I realized I wasn't subbed and clicked on the subscribe button as I thought to myself, "I hope Bill and family are doing well and I wonder if he'll ever post on you tube again . . " This was last night.
So then I pick up my little track phone this morning and there you are lol. 😁
I wish you could do some acrylic tutorials, that would be like Christmas. 😍
But anyway please know how much I admire you and your exquisite skills as an artist. As far as I'm concerned your art videos are unmatched by anyone else out there making painting videos. God has surely blessed all of your senses with such talent and creativity.
Lord bless you and thanks for all your videos on you tube. 🌷

Hi. Thanks for the valuable info. Technical question. I’ve read that the Galkyd/Alkyd is considered to be a “fat” medium and that it should be used as with any other medium for the “fat over lean” principle. I like the smooth/enamel like surface it gives and haven’t been thinning it at all using the alkyd as is. Could I use oil paint straight from the tube over a dry layer where I used alkyd as medium?
