- The worlds best golfers are hitting the golf ball longer and longer distances with increasingly faster swing speeds.
You can't watch pro golf without being amazed by the swing speeds and distances that are partly fuelled by impressive golf gym workouts.
Rory McIlroy is one the new generation of golfers with huge power - he's stated adding 30 yards to his drives since he first joined the PGA Tour.
But how can your average weekend golfers even hope to keep up?
I took a PGA Tour style fitness test and got hold of a golf training program just like Rory Mcilroys Workout Plan - I've now been following this golf gym program for 10 weeks.
Here are my results and the answer to the question - DOES STRONGER EQUAL LONGER?

Jon, love your channel and your videos. You have inspired me to start training in the gym, with super speed sticks and to see if I can get to single digits from a 12 handicap. Your videos give me lots of guidance. Thank you!
Wow this comment has really made my day, thank you! I wish you the very best of luck with it all.
Great progress!! Keep at it 💪
Thanks guys!!
Thanks for the content. I will definitely start using superspeed and weight lifting. I generally swing my driver 108mph but this inspired me to train to get to 115/120mph! Love it
You're already fast, so I'm sure the sky is the limit for you! Good luck - let us know how you get on.
Great work Jon! 👏
Thanks mate!
Hi Jon, just some of my own research in gaining distance on the pursuit of 300 yard drives: The average PGA tour player weighs 180 lbs and produces around 0.63 mph of clubhead speed per pound of body weight. (Average 114 mph club head speed on tour) Rory produces 0.76 mph/lb, (160 lb body weight) up there with a few super efficient drivers for their body weight. I think a powerful weight lifting routine combined with consistency over a long time allows him to achieve the efficiency without the high body weight. If you don't mind me saying, you don't look very massive or powerful in your swing. How much do you weigh? What is your deadlift, squat, and bench weights? I personally started at 128 lbs, 5'7" with no training a little over a year ago, now at 145 lbs deadlifting and squatting 210 lbs, benching 140 lbs. My drives went from 210 carry, 230 total to 250 carry, 270 total. My PR long drive is 287 yards total. My rough efficiency is around 0.66 mph/lb, so I'm hoping that with continued weight training and 1 lb/week weight gain for the next 3 months, I should be able to hit 156 lbs body weight for a 300 yard total PR. I love your videos and they keep me inspired on my journey. Hope these thoughts help!
This is brilliant - fascinating insights, thanks so much for sharing! Love the journey you're on also. I'm only really at the beginning with those bigger lifts as I had to get myself a base and get back into good habits. Super keen to see if I can follow some of your progress. Thanks for commenting and the positive vibes.
Absolutely! I'm subscribed to you, so I will stay tuned and leave comments if there is any good progress. I don't use CZcams much, just trying to focus on my golf game this year. I hope my insights are true and help you! Honestly, it bugs me when people say size doesn't matter in golf. There seems to be a really important balance between strength, weight, height, and technique. There's a size and muscle reason LPGA players don't hit it as far as men, and people need to accept the physical nature of reality if they want to hit it far. Hitting a 300 yard drive is a really difficult accomplishment of power!
@@golfboyhunter looking forward to the updates!
Hey mate what was your workout program to achieve those numbers? Were you focusing on fast twitch fibers where you try to be explosive or slow twitch where you are aiming for endurance? Did you have speed training on the side in your program? Insane stats, im around 5’7 155-160 pounds and i can really only carry about 220 on a good swing at 100ish mph swing. Hoping to find a good workout plan which can help that carry!
Great video! I am 63 years old and just hit my PR club head speed of 124. Thats with real driver and ball on course. I do a very similar work as you. I am a plus 3 HC. The added distance is so much fun. . Keep going with your great workouts
That's brilliant motivation, thanks!
This is something I've been wanting. I want to incorporate golf weight training into my workouts....i recently got back into gym after heart surgery and I'm 60. Working out and flexibility will be key to playing well moving fwd. I'll be dusting off the Speed Sticks, too.
I highly recommend it! Though you might want to get the advice of an expert :-)
I would argue the statement longer drives equal lower scores. Yes it could help but 75% shots over par really come down to short game. Chipping/Pitching/Putting is what will really help the scores come down at the end of the day. Drives for show, putts for dough.
Great job. Now the test is to keep it going and convert the extra speed into improved shot making. 👍
Agreed!
Awesome video! Looking good. I think you can get 10 mile more out of your swing speed with bioswing dynamics from Mike Adams and Terry Rowles, they are the best
Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out!
Gym definitely should be apart of any golfer’s training. Heck even any regular person should be in gym 3-5 times a week. Right now i can top out 130 with driver swing speed ball speed 160. But man so hard to control it.
You sound like a weapon with the driver!! Impressive.
With 130 mph swing speed you ball speed should be in the 190's.
Yes. 110mph swing can get 160 ball…130 swing should be miles past 160
Great video, I'm tagging a long for the ride!
Thanks mate
Your link for the launch monitor isn't correct.
Sorry about that. Do you mean the discount part? Using: JONPERKINS should also apply the discount.
Any estimation why you can‘t swing your driver as fast as you red speedstick?
Maybe you should try one of Martin Borgmeiers drills to improve further.
Hey, the Red stick is heavier than a normal driver, so I'd say that. Doesn't hurt to check out new ideas though!
Can you do a prgr vs trackman with a. Long driver
Not sure what you mean? If you mean a PRGR vs Trackman accuracy test, there is one of those on my channel 👍
Honest congratulations on your improvements in your physical performance.
But were can this “insane workout routine” be found
I've seen you post several playing videos, I think you just need to keep more drives in play and work on your wedges and short irons, you won't make many bogeys that way
Your strength is clearly your touch with with your shorter clubs
If you can control your spin and trajectory with your wedge shots you'll save par from anywhere, even from 100 yards. Inside 50 yards you'll be getting up an down more than half the time and you'll be aiming to hole any chips just off the green
You can shoot under par golf with like 95mph swing speed
Hey Daniel, well the good news is I'm looking for a coach to get lessons from!!
@@JonPerkinsGolf Good luck! You can be the guy who drives everyone nuts by knocking down flagsticks with your short irons, making miracle pars from everywhere, and holing 1-2 long putts a round
@@DanielSong39 doesn't sound so bad 😀
How did you find out Rory’s program?
Went to a top coach who trains a bunch of PGA Tour players, LPGA Tour and Elite Ams. Program is based on what they all do, which from research and conversations is also very similar to what Rory and those top level guys do.
Good video, 4-5mph increase very respectable
Thanks!
Good stuff. I think if you combine the training w getting a decent coach, you’ll start to see a lot more gains. We have a guy at our club weighs no more than 145 lbs and hits it 300-310. He’s just got great technique.
One sidebar: be very careful w those resistance bands near your face. A buddy of mine was doing some P90x exercises when one of the bands snapped and hit him in the eye….exploded his cornea. Had a couple procedures, walked around blind for about 9 months in one eye and still not 100%.
Wow, thanks for the tip/warning!! And thanks for watching along as well.
Great content as always. Funny you are 5% faster than me on the speed sticks but I average 108mph on the driver. 🤷♂️ Not sure what that comes down to, must be strength I guess
Thanks, really appreciate that!! I'd say it could be technique, I don't think I'm as efficient as I could be in my swing - guessing I lose some of my potential speed through having average technique, but just a guess. Thanks for watching along
what app was that
It was the gym's own app. The gym was called Precision Athletica.
What for? Did your putting improve?
haha not yet
You will get to those 320 yard drives soon.
I hope so 😀
Unless this results in significantly lower scores, then all of this is just minutiae unless the goal is to represent the Australian Olympic team in the decathlon.
Yeah from the videos I've seen his biggest problem is keeping his longer clubs in play, both from the tee and with the fairway woods/middle irons off the deck
Honest congratulations on your improvements in your physical performance.
But to call this an “insane workout routine” is really a huge stretch.
Come back after you’ve seen a garden-variety wrestling or football workout- then you can talk about an “insane workout” routine.
Thanks mate and agree... A bit of creative license on the YT title. It's helped me though
@@JonPerkinsGolf Yes Sir. I meant absolutely no disrespect.
Keep up the great work!
You have a great-looking golf swing.
@@kaypie3112 No problem my friend. Thanks!!
Thats an insane workout? cmon be serious
Yeah I know and agree. Honestly based on comments and messages the video has positively helped people, with make me feel it was very worth while. Seems though that the packaging needs a little extra flare to get clicks and ultimately enable it to help people. Trying Rory's stock standard workouts just doesn't seem to get cut through. Thanks for watching and commenting.
now fix the mechanics and i bet you will find more distance gains than you found with the strength training
So you start your training day by drinking a powerade which is full of sugar??? seriously?
