- The fabled sea passage to India was now a highway. The Indian Ocean was a massive free trade zone. Upon its waters the trade in spice brought in immense wealth to anyone willing to brave the dangers, the currents, and the politics. The Portuguese now burst into the scene like a storm and were determined to disrupt everything

#age #discovery #Portugal
I have Portuguese ancestors, but I am from the United States. When I was a child, my father would talk about the Portuguese with pride and admiration, going in depth about the discoveries of Portugal and how they changed the history of the world. My father passed when I was 12, but I always had a fascination of my ancestors and their feats. Your videos go so in depth of the specifics, and I thank you for your research and efforts in making these documentaries.
Christian I'm really happy that you liked my videos so much. Thank you for the awesome comments and sharing your story about your father. Portugal did the impossible here
💙
I'm Puerto Rican, but me grandfather on Dad's side was also Portuguese, from Oporto. I also grew up on legends of Portuguese greatness, seamanship and ultimate betrayal by the Spanish, who clipped Portugals empire in favor of their own after the unification of the crowns in the 1580s, embedding the Portuguese to fight Spains losing wars against its former ally, England. It broke Portugals Empire and spirit.... Funny though, my Grandma from Mom's side is of Norwegian descent, and I grew up hearing from her Norwegian sea legends, from Snori, the first European born in the Americas (Greenland), the voyages of Eric the Red... The Norse, another of Europe's great discoverers and sea people. ✌️
@@pupysb6267 I've been debating about doing an age of discovery series and including the Scandinavian countries - they were most likely the first to make it to N America after all
Wow. These guys were super aggressive! How does one king have so much power? Ordering the Planet around, taking lives , stealing riches? I'm exhausted. 😮
How’s this guy Duarte Pereira not known as one of the greatest battle minds ever? That battle was impossible, it was insane, and he pulled it off brilliantly.
Totally agree
The Portuguese Achilles
He has some skills
It is amazing to think that these seafarers traveled around an unmapped Africa to foreign and alien India where they lacked supplies, starved, made enemies, and managed to crush them in battle despite being outnumbered.
It was a voyage into the unknown - anything could have happened. Yet these men were undaunted
Gunpowder, India was conquered on it.
@@prathameshjoshi007 As you can see from the video, you had gunpowder as well. You were fighting on home turf and had almost a hundred times as many soldiers and you lost. No, it wasn't just gunpowder.
I'm a catholic ( Syro- Malabar Eastern Catholic) which used to be nestorians mentioned in the video. It really is great to watch this video sitting from my home in Calicut.
An interesting fact; the kingdoms in Kerala ( state which includes Calicut, Cochin,Kannoor and Kollam) used to have a matrilineal dynasty. More specifically, the heir to the throne is always the king's sister's son, ie, his nephew. Hence the reason the nephew's of kings keep popping in the video.
Please hurry with the rest of this series! we love it so much, we know this is hard to produce but understand that no one else has this content about Portugal.
I make them as fast as I can =)
Dudeeee @@FlashPointHx don't you rush anything, take your time.... pls. Every episode of these is absolute Gold

Fun fact: here in Brazil we have a football team that is in honor of Vasco Da Gama, the team have the same name as the navigator, they won the Brazilian league 4 times, the Brazilian cup 1 time and the Copa libertadores, the biggest throphy in the continent 1 time in 1998, right now they are in bad situation they were relegeated 4 times and disputed the Second division 5 times, now they played in the first division but they were fighting against the releagation in the last season
"This is the fleet of the King of Portugal, my sovereign, who is the Lord of the Sea, the World, and also OF YOU!"
- Based Vasco da Gama. 😄.

Not to insult my history teachers, or those who wrote the history books from when I was in school, but these 2 videos alone were sooooooooooooooooo much more effective on teaching me my own country history (from that period) then the school books or the teachers ever did, and on top that these videos are super entertaining and oh sooo well narrated. This is truly valuable stuff, I hope it gest translated to Portuguese (of Portugal hopefully) so not only the kids, but every Portuguese in general can learn our history, in a less "glorified" way, because truth be told, there's almost as much to be proud of as there is to be ashamed of. Anyway, amazing stuff, I truly have no words, congrats to all involved.
Thank you so much for such an awesome comment! I've been approached by two people who would be interested in translating into Portuguese - but it would be a lot of work. It may take a bit of time to produce. Again, thanks !
Here in the states we learned alot about France Spain UK but almost nothing about Portugal we knew they where players on the open sea but thats it
@@tyronemaroney335 and now what do you think Tyrone?
I think it may have something to do with the leftist-marxist run education system. They can't stand the fact the individuals achieved such greatness.
I'm Brazilian, and your videos had a big impact on me. Hearing how the pirates of the world, and how they take everything, the school story says with pride, made me see who Europeans are wild. And they still are.
Every age had its opportunists - every civilization was built on the blood of others
Amazing videos.
I am Portuguese and our history has always fascinated me.

Thanks a lot.
Thank you so much 😀
There are beautiful videos about Late Medieval Portugal by Schwerpunkt that I strongly recommend as a background
his voice is hard to understand and he rambles on about nonsense for way too long
I agree about him rambling about nonsense. He comes off pretty unhinged at times. I had to unsub after a few months.
I listened for about five minutes and gave up for the same reasons others have mentioned
he uses sock accounts to advertise his channel on like every other history related channel. Go away.
Amazing job, loved it! Can't wait for part 3! 😁 Netflix should really make a movie about these Portuguese heroic battles and their untold maritime adventures.
Hey thanks! Yeah hoping Netflix will do that one of these days. The first video of part 3 came out yesterday BTW

Francisco de Almeida and Afonso de Albuquerque the real makers of an empire.
Good work. Congratulations. Without wanting to monopolize, I suggest a look at the battle of Diu with Francisco de Almeida and the battles of Hormuz and Malacca by Afonso de Albuquerque, authentic works of art of military strategy from that time.

@@danielguerrero894it’s an old rumor that we already knew about Brasil at the time of the Treaty of Tordesilhas, since we were weirdly insistent on moving the boundary further west than the proposed line. But that might have been to secure the equatorial route we used to sail up and down Africa.
We’ll probably never know, since a lot of the relevant documentation went up in smoke in the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.

This era of Portuguese history is fascinating. There is a publisher in Portugal which has been dropping new editions of king's biographies. The Aviz ones are very good, João II and Manuel are out (João I and Duarte also), and Sebastião is in pre sale. Hopefully João III and Afonso V will come soon, to complete my collection.

This series is great! I'd love to see one about the Spanish Empire too!

Is Vasco da Gama the GOAT admiral? He heard that 150 ships are coming to attack so he quickly attacks first and destroys everything... Multiple times and after getting away by a hair thread from his death? WTF? GOAT 🐐
