Wharfedale speakers make any music sound good
Andrew when I want an honest refreshing thorough review on audio or large screens I can count on you to deliver and I get to relax and unplug from a very busy schedule and enjoy self-care for me and just want to say thank you for what you and Kristi bring to your channel.
Wow, thanks!
One last comment, I loved this week’s unplugged episode. Thank you for spending so much time hanging out with us!
Happy Father's Day y'all.
Yard work is done maaan, time for Kristi and Andrew 🤘
Thanks so much for joining us! Hope the yard looks great!
I have a pair of these. I also have Linton 85s. I agree the Dentons are not for near field. The three drivers can't properly integrate sitting that close. I use them in a small room, but my listening position is a good 2.5m (or 8 feet) away which works very well. I also agree that you can get them closer to the wall. I'm about 24cm or 9 and a half inches off mine. I agree re toe-in. Mine are just a tiny bit off axis (kind of shooting over my shoulders where I sit) and for me that is about right - but YMMV. Straight on into the room does not work as well.
Also agree re the sub as a handy option. I'm not a bass head but I do use a SVS SB1000 with mine (as I happened to have had a sub in my space before the Super Dentons arrived anyway).
On the 'upgrade' question vs the Linton, I respectfully don't think that is the right question. The Supers are for a smaller room, if you like the style and sound of these. The Lintons I think remain the better speaker - but they need a bigger space and not everyone has the right room for them.
Thanks for the review. From the Heritage line; I’ve owned the Denton 85, Linton 85, and now settled on the new Dovedale 90th.
I liked all speakers for different reasons, but man the Dovedales are chefs kiss
Very fair and honest review. Not in my wheelhouse for speakers as I, like Carl, tend to listen at substantial volumes fairly often so I prefer larger floorstanding speakers. Keep up the great work, it's always a pleasure to learn something new.
Been waiting for your review of these. Thanks. 👍🏼🎶
Hope you enjoyed it!
I like Wharfedale and I like the look. I may have to check a pair out. Thank you, Andrew
So excited to see a Wharfadale video! I'm new to HiFi and have never heard of them before, but I found an old pair of Wharfadale Diamond 7.2's (not anniversary ed.), which were apparently the company's first serious model, on Facebook for $25 as the first "real" speakers I've ever owned. I paired it with a small old Yamaha powered sub for $25 and a Marantz SR4002 I got for FREE, so my entire first system came together for $50 bucks! Can't find anything bad to say about any of it at that price point and I'm excited to finally dip my toe into the hobby.
It sounds like you're having fun which is what this is all about! Thanks for watching, Justin.
Thanks for this! :) Keep up the awesome work!
Happy dad's day everyone
Hi Z!
Morning! Thanks for joining us on this special day.
I bought a pair of Wharfedale bookshelf speakers 40 years ago this week. My daughter is using them. Great speakers.
Wow sounds like they stood the test of time
Appreciate your time and effort in getting this to us. Great review.
My pleasure!
Thanks for reviewing these.
I love the Wharfedale lineup, but at $1399 a pair without stands, it seems there are plenty of outlet Lintons you can get for a similar price.
Great Sunday everyone!! Love the look of these speakers, always have had a soft spot for Wharfedale.
Howdy!
They're wonderful little speakers. So glad to see you here this morning!

Happy Father's Day indeed! Hope you have a great day, and we'll see you later, my friend!
Thank you very much, I loved the review. As always, great quality of work.
Appreciate you watching!
I do enjoy more and more old school designs. Especially in Audio. I guess that’s what happens when you get older in this hobby? But hear me out: imagine this speaker, slightly larger, ala Heresy or Cornwall, but fully powered, with all the connections on the back and an HDMI in tow?… like seriously, that would be a killer combo. It’s for the sound, it’s got the space to do it inside, and it’s got the super flexibility. I’d buy a pair I’m pretty sure.
Great review as always! Definitely wonder Kristi’s thoughts on it as well! Hope everyone had an awesome Father’s Day yesterday and the new week is as easy going as it can be!
Thanks, Andrew, for an excellent description of what the Super Dentons do so well. I'm so glad you focused on the all-round capabilities of these speakers with all types of music and their easy match with different partnering amplifiers and sources. These are important aspects for buying decisions, I feel, as well as for being able to live comfortably with hi-fi systems. This is what the Heritage range in Wharfedale is all about.
BTW, I notice that your video shows the treble units on the inside, as would be expected in audiophile arrangements. However, as the midrange units carry such a wide bandwidth, it is worth experimenting with the midrange units facing the inside. Easy to try and to hear the difference - the results will depend on the room and how close the speakers are to each other, so just stick with the arrangement that sounds the best.
Hi Peter. Thank you so much for watching our Super Denton review. One of our viewers has a question about the Leak 250s that I hope you can answer before we film our Unplugged follow-up episode (tomorrow). I would love to include your response.
A viewer says, "I was surprised to see the non-recessed mounting screws for the drivers, which themselves appear recessed into the baffle. I'm guessing that was a style choice in the design, but I am curious of those raised edges right at the speaker surround would be something that would affect the sound, i.e. diffraction?"
Thank you,
Andrew
I still got a pair of RTR G-200 Tower Speakers, they have a 10" woofer, 12" passive radiator, a 1.5-inch soft dome midrange unit tweeter. In 1976-81 the retail price was $600 a pair. 120 watts at 4 ohms, 91db 1 watt/1meter, 25-25,000Hz frequency response. Cabinet dimensions are 14 1/2" W x 36 1/4" H x 12 1/2" D. I bought these when I was working at "Custom High Fi" back in the late 70s. These are some the best sounding speakers I've ever heard and I still use them today. These are really solid and they are extremely heavy in weight! I love them!
Where would you put these compared to the EVO 4.2 bookshelf? Love all of your product reviews and try to tune in frequently. Thanks for doing what you do.
Reallistic review andrew.well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
I would be interested to see how they compare to other similarly priced but more modern looking Wharfedale models like the Aura 2 or Evo 4.2. Do they have the "house sound" baked into them like other Wharfedale models?
I’m glad you compared the Super Denton with the R3 Meta. I recently purchased the R3 Meta and was bummed that Wharfedale came out with the Super Denton a week later. I was curious to see if my RN-2000A was a better match with the KEF or the Wharfdale.
Oh lord! Those are some gorgeous speakers 😍
They're very stylish!
@@andrewrobinsonreviews yes indeed sir.
Thanks Drew as always .. peace ✌️ ❤
Big fathers day cookout at my place today. Sorry i missed the premiere!!!! Away we go
Great review, and I appreciate the details you included on the various toe in placements. I'd love to hear more (either on Friday or even its own video) about your process for finding the "right" amount of toe in for a speaker. I always struggle with this and wonder if I'm getting the most from my speakers given their placement in my room. Thanks!
Your questions is covered in today's Unplugged. czcams.com/video/KNPfRGA82as/video.htmlfeature=shared
Andrew, I'm curious. I have Dynaudio Emit 20's, Emit 10's for rear channel and Dynaudio's center channel. I'm concentrating more on the 20's. have you ever reviewed them? what are your thoughts about them? compared to some of the speakers you have reviewed recently.
Please give your thoughts vs the Evo 4.1 which you stated were "fan damn tactic". Thank you!!!!! Always love your reviews!!!!
I have been waiting for this review, and thank you so much for sharing your opinion. So the Linton is better value (including a beautiful set of stands) and the sound with a few hundred dollars more?
If you personally had to choose between lintons and kef r3 meta what would you pick?
Is that the KEF kc92 I see? Are you reviewing that because I'm looking into that sub to go with my ls50 wireless ii. I would love your review of that sub.
Thinking of The Super Denton w/ a Marantz Stereo or Cinema 70, any thoughts, I've done a months worth of research yet have not consulted w/ an audio expert ( because if your at the store talking to a sales person they'll say anything for you to pull the trigger on a $2,500-$2,800 hi fi setup... that's before getting a turntable, streamer etc.
I would love to buy the super Dentons if they were biwire and especially biampable as I love tubes on midrange and treble with transistors on bass. I wonder if I can have a pair customized with extra binding posts, like the regular Dentons.
I love my Lintons. How do the Dentons compare to those in your opinion? I know that you also had these for review once.
Thanks for the great and hard work by reviewing all that stuff.
Your question makes an appearance in today's Unplugged!! czcams.com/video/KNPfRGA82as/video.htmlfeature=shared
Wonderful review!
Purchased the 85th Anniversary Dentons years ago based on your recommendation. Love them!! Paired them with a Hegel H95.
So glad you reviewed these as I was wondering if I should upgrade.
Now thinking of getting a pair of Heresy IV’s.
I still want detail but looking for a larger sound. Would the Heresy’s be an appropriate upgrade?
The Heresy will be an entirely different experience. If you can wait another week or two, our Leak review will be out. I think you'll find it helpful.
May I suggest an upgrade from the Sonus Faber Lumina II comparisons to the Lumina II Amator? I don't think they make the former any longer, unless our dealer here doesn't have them any longer.
Cool review, which I was glad to see. One thing i would respectfully like to mention is that I'm not sure that you are aware of (or maybe you are) is that the Super Dentons are designed to be used with the grills in place for the most balanceed response. This is from their designer, Peter Comeu. Don't know if that recommendation is in the manual. Your review proved this to be correct, so great work. However, I'm sure more than a few people will use them without the grills with the rising giving more so called "detailed" top end. This goes for all of the Wharfedale Heritage models going back to the Denton 75th. Not sure about the previous Heritage models.... The Airedale Neo's and Airedale Heritage from the early 2000's. Keep up the great work.
I wonder about the choice to offset the acoustic centers of the drivers left and right. Especially considering a midrange dome can’t play much lower than 500hz, so vocals are going to be playing through all 3 drivers.
Great review as always. These look beautiful. Was looking at these. Now, I am referring to Canadian funds here. These are $1899. Linton are $1999, the Lumina II $1799 and the Kef R3 is $2995. The R3 becomes a tough comparison. The Lumina vs Wharfedale depends if you want to be analytical or musical from the sounds of it. The Linton however if you are comfortable with that all day sound seems an easy choice unless you are pressed for room.
As an owner of both (Linton 85s and Super Dentons) I totally agree. The issue is space. The Lintons don't play well in a small room. But these do.
Is the intro music a full track? If yes, can you provide a name/link?
Is the tweeter different from the lintons?
I miss the big Technics speaker back around 25 years ago. A speaker with a 6.5" woofer is too small for my liking. I was at Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine, FL. I think the Technics speaker had like an 8" or maybe a 10" driver and man such speakers were massive. They are not floor-standing speakers in a traditional sense, but can be mounted up against the upper wall, close to the ceiling. I remember those speakers can get really deep down to 40Hz or so. Maybe lower, but again, it's been far too long since I remembered the Technics speaker.
These look great in your room
Awesome speaker, I have 4 of them in my home theater 🔊🔊🔊🔊
Nice!
WOW. What are you using for a center? Or are you going phantom center?
@@andrewrobinsonreviews happy father's day 😎👍🏼lol , I have some old A/D/S and R11
Nice review. Did you try having the mid drivers on the inside? I've listened to speakers with offset mid / tweeters and found that some sound better with the mids on the inside rather than the recommended outside configuration, especially centre imaging of vocals.
Good point. Peter Comeau made this suggestion as an experiment when positioning speakers in an earlier comment on this video. Paraphrasing, he said either way is worth trying to see what sounds better in one’s listening space. I will definitely try both ways when I get these.
Thanks for the great review. Do you feel the need for toe in tweaking to find the right balance of width and accuracy has something to do with the wider front baffle design in general? Or maybe it’s not that simple.
I believe, in this case, it has everything to do with the baffle and chunky grille.
Andres wouldn't be nice to see M1 paired with then? I don't know about 6 ohms though....
That would be cool to do an episode on your favorite white colored tower or bookshelf speakers?
It could be speakers that don't necessarily completely blow your hair back, but just have a nice aesthetic and decent sound.
Nice review, nice product. How would you compare them to the Focal Vestia No 1? Same price.
Check out today's Unplugged for your answer: czcams.com/video/KNPfRGA82as/video.htmlfeature=shared
Hi Andrew, feel like you missed out on a key comparison between the Super Dentons to the KLH Model 3 given how they are so similar in dimensions, not to mention the retro look
Do you find that speaker grills frequently make a difference? I always thought it was a placebo effect, but your measurements prove otherwise. Excellent video as always, A&K
Thanks for your question! We cover this in today's Unplugged. czcams.com/video/KNPfRGA82as/video.htmlfeature=shared
Great content. What is the wall paneling you’re using behind your TV? Looks really cool!!
Thanks for your support and for watching. The wall behind our speakers and TV is actually a DIY acoustic fabric wall that I made temporarily while we're going through some decor and construction changes at the house. I'm going to put out a video on it sooner than later. It's super easy to make and renter friendly!
How would these work as rear speakers and side speakers paired with a Sony 7000es

Adopting Haiti, a documentary I produced, was released in the US in 2011. I do not know the status of its distribution at this time.
@robinsonbrand I didn't know it was released. I just recall you talking about it on an older video and it's always piqued my interest. I have a family member who adopted their son during that time. Thank you for replying! Take care!

Wharfedale from my home town❤
The 85’s have been my bedroom speakers for years. Turntable or DAC, they are easy to lose hours to and I’ve never wanted for anything more (in that room).
I’m interested to see the review of those Leak 250 that were in the background of the last vid.
Good review.
It's coming soon!
Good review. I tried a different pair of Wharfedales, but they shared the same dip. Evertime I listened, I always said to myself, if it weren't for that dip, these would be great. I ended up sending them back. They could have been great! Such a shame...
Your comment makes an appearance in today's Unplugged. Check out our response here czcams.com/video/KNPfRGA82as/video.htmlfeature=shared.
I wonder if that dip is in the crossover region between the mid and tweeter, and a cancelation is audible right in between when you're close to them. I bet this makes the O.G. Denton a better choice for nearfield.
These or the Lintons for home theater?
Your question is covered in today's Unplugged! czcams.com/video/KNPfRGA82as/video.htmlfeature=shared

@@chrisveltman1795 You're a gem. I'm glad she was able to see them. Last night's San Fran show was cancelled at the last minute so she could rest her voice.
If u like a warmer traditional Hi -FI sound, they are very good.
Thank you Andrew. I like the looks. Every time I hear about these mid dips, I ask this question. Could it be that it’s just part of the design or they just missed it? I heard people mention the same thing about the RP 600Ms and they sound good to me.
The dips tend to reveal themselves in the near field measurements but often soft themselves out when listening at a distance of 6+ feet. Dips tend to be something some folks can point to and say, "see, look, crap speaker!" when in reality these dips are less of an issue and the speaker still sounds good/great!
@@andrewrobinsonreviewshow would you compare this one to the Wharfedale LINTON Heritage or a tower with dual 8” woofers like the JBL 698, or x3 6.5” woofers in a Polk S60? I wonder about towers with smaller woofers vs larger. Some towers only have 5.25” woofers. Does size matter when you have actual powered subwoofers?

How much of an effect do room correction routines like YAPO actually have on in room response?
They can have an effect on in-room responses at one or a few locations, but these types of correction don't solve decay times or outright poor placement.
loved the reference to the R3 Metas! I currently own a pair and have found them to perform WAY above their price. I am driving them with $15000 in amplification and they scale impeccably well. Monitor Audio is going to be noticeably more dynamic and punchy.
Somehow I didn't come away from this review thinking I had been introduced to an instant classic, or "The Ultimate CLASSIC SOUND Experience!".
Hello from Germany!
From my DIY experience, I’ll say this - putting a midrange driver with a 6.5-inch woofer is a waste of money. Even at 8 inches this is still in question. This is where it gets noticeably better - with woofers of 10 inches or more.
Yeah, when I saw the picture of the driver layout I thought it would be an old-school full range thing with a big woofer.

Here‘s a fun game: music recommendations inspired by the TV screensaver. Based on today‘s image, I recommend Benjamin Britten, Sea Interludes. (Or the complete Peter Grimes, if you‘ve got the time for it.)
Very interesting game! Curious what others think.
Cool looking speaker! I’m just not a fan of the inset baffle. This can’t be good for the sound, and the speaker could still be built to look good, potentially even better with a nice smooth baffle featuring magnetic grilles and clean driver trim rings. These things all contribute to better sound and looks. I believe. 🔈👍🏻

Anybody experienced any tower speakers that sound better at higher volumes and not so good at low volume? If yes, can this be solved anyhow…? For example a more powerful amp? Or is there no way to improve that… thanks
An amp with good current will work wonders at lower volumes, as evidenced by my experience(s) with McIntosh and similar.

According to Wharfedale, the Super Dentons are NOT replacing the Denton 85; they're an addition to the line, not a replacement. Not sure if I agree that this is a good strategy but to each their own.
The Super Dentons are quite a bit bigger I'd say and I think they do sound quite different.
Would these work in a 5.1 setup?
There isn't a matching center but there's no rule that says you can't use a Super Denton as a center. But yes, these would work as part of a vintage-inspired HT.
Good morning, friends! I really dig the look of these, but would pit them against the Denton or a Sonus Faber if I were in the market for vintage bookshelf.
I think these may be a little better or larger sounding than the Denton 85. The Lumina II is more focused which we discuss in the review.
@robinsonbrand I promise that I watched the whole thing. 😅 I just really like the design language that SF is putting out. Also, I would want to hear them in my space.
Happy Dad's Day! I've been looking forward to this one.
Hope you enjoy it.
Can you EQ active/powered speakers?
Sure. You may have to use a third party product like a standalone EQ or miniDSP, but it's possible.

Andrew, it’s been a while since I left a comment but wanted you to know I still phucs with you!
Hello from Hong Kong~~
Hi Ohno
Hi
Hey, Andrew & Kristi! You mention speaker placement quite often and I've picked up a few pieces over time, but would love to hear a more compreshensive explanation of how to get the most out of my speakers and effects of such things like toe, distance from the wall, etc.. Shame on me if you've already done this.
I just commented asking for the same! I feel like I could be getting more out of my current speakers with better placement. Here's hoping we'll get a more comprehensive overview in a future video!
I'll do my best to answer this in Friday's Unplugged video.
Hi Mars, Your question is covered in today's Unplugged! Watch it here czcams.com/video/KNPfRGA82as/video.htmlfeature=shared
Ok. I am very curious about how this 3-way speaker compares to the Linton. With stands, it is basically equal to the price of the Linton.
Have a great day!
Please send these speakers to me, instead of back to the Wharfedale mothership.
They won't miss them....and I'll give them a good home 😉😆
HAHAHA, I wish I could send every review pair to someone in our channel family.
