That's REAL country music my friend, it tells a story, country music as I knew as I grew up with is gone. This song pulls at your heart strings.

I LOVED your reaction when you realized the guy had passed away! The song is so simple, yet so powerful.
I believe that she HAD loved him at one time, and wrote him a love letter in 1962. He later underlined every “ I love you” that she had written in the letter. The song never tells why she left him.
“He Stopped Loving her Today” was released in 1980, so he must’ve carried a torch for her for 18 years.
Actually he wrote the song after they had divorced but still deeply loved each other. He was a good bit older than her to start with. So he always expected to be the first to pass away from either age or alcohol and drinking addiction. The saddest part of it all is that she died long before anyone could have expected. At the age of 55 years old. So after he wrote this song. They had both remarried other people but still cared and loved each other until the end. Sadly George Jones never had a clue that she would die before him and that he would live to be 81-years-old until his passing in 2013. Heartbreaking!

My mom and dad divorced in 1979. My dad never remarried. He died in 2007. He went to his grave loving my mom. It was the saddest thing I had ever witnessed watching him pine for her all those years. This was one of my dad's favorite songs. Great reaction!
My grandma died early and my grandpa never remarried despite neighbor ladies chasing him hard. He was heart broke for the rest of his life, left with young kids to raise.
Same as me basically. My dad dies in 1992 and my mom never remarried and only dated one guy. She died in 2021.
This is me today. My x divorced me 20 years ago and I could never find a woman I could love like I did her.
Same with my Dad. My mom left him when I was 17. She would come and see him now and then. She remarried a few years later. But he never stopped loving her and never dated. He died suddenly coming out from work at age 49. It was a huge funeral. Everyone liked him. But this song always reminds me of him….
My Dad also. It's very sad and beautiful love story I always cry when I hear it.

This is considered by many to be the best country song of all time. The level of emotion and storytelling and the absolutely iconic nature of this song is unsurpassed. I have heard this song countless times and every time it still touches me. This is how country music - or music in general - is supposed to make us feel.
Perfectly said! I’m 48, have listened to this song hundreds of times but it still hits the same every time. Definitely one of my all time favorites.
Personally, I think George Jones had the best voice of all time in C & W music (followed by Hank Williams & Vince Gill) and is in the top 6 male voices in 20th century music across all genres.

I was a musician (fiddler) in Nashville for several years. One time I was outside of the Grand Ole Opry waiting to perform at the CMA Awards. I was killing time and practicing my fiddle. I finished playing a tune and behind me I heard, “Careful, son. You’re gonna hurt yourself fiddlin’ like that.” Turned around and it was George Jones! A few years later he passed away and I attended his funeral service at that same location - The Grand Ole Opry.
I remember crying when I heard of George Jones’ passing and I remember watching his funeral service on T.V.

He originally didn't want to record this because he didn't think anyone would buy "that old sad song." But it turned into one of his most successful hits
He actually bet $1 that it would be a flop. He admitted that it was the best $1 he ever lost. He wanted to lose more bets like that.
I believe he referred to it as.... That morbid son of a bitch!.....
It rescued his career. I thank God that I got to see him back in 2004 when he was doing his 50 years of hits tour to go along with his cd that came out. I'm pretty sure I was the youngest guy who bought tickets to go see him, as I was in college at the time, and he was amazing. Easily top 6 of my favorite artists in country music. I have a hard time knocking Hank off of the #1 spot, and then George, Merle, Willie, Waylon, and Dwight all fight back and forth in the next 5 positions.

I'm German. Never heard C/W before. My American husband introduced me to this kind of music. I didn't speak English, but the first song I heard was He stopped Loving her today, by George Jones. Didn't know what he was singing about, but his voice touched me deeply and brought tears to my eyes. After I understood the words, it became my favorite song. I have heard these song so many times now and every time I start sobbing. It touched my heart and soul so deeply. I will never forget the first time I heard it. This song breaks my heart. My husband is deceased now for 14 years and I never looked at another man. He was my soul mate and will be till I join him in the afterlife. Can't wait till I see him again. MrLboyed you have a beautiful sounding voice. You ought to be an announcer on the news or a talk show. Love listening to your awesome voice.

I watched a PBS program recently about William Shakespeare--they found a transcript of a play he personally wrote and it was full of misspellings . . . and sometimes he spelled the same word in the same sentence "two different ways!" 😄
Nothing makes a beer more palatable than a good George Jones song. The ol' possum is a masterful storyteller and he plays your heartstrings like a guitar.

This is it man, the good stuff. This song sung by this singer is the quintessential country song above all others. George Jones had a velvet voice and controlled so well. When you’ve heard a thousand different country songs, some of them extremely good by hundreds of different singers, this one by this singer effortlessly rises to the top. Almost equally good, is another George Jones song called The Grand Tour.

I used to call this song a Shakespeare tragedy in four minutes. The beginning of the song paints the story of a breakup that wasn't over anything in particular. There's no anger on her part, and he starts by saying I'll love you til I die. And he does. It is musical storytelling at its finest.
The song was released in 1980. George Jones was a master at making the listener feel what he was putting down. Jones himself was a deeply emotional man, so much so that he used drugs and alcohol (of EPIC proportions) to shut out the hurt inside. When George sang, you believed whatever he sang about, because he himself felt the feelings that he was singing about.
One episode of his in particular is forever memorialized in the Vince Gill song “One More Last Chance”
One of my favorite George Jones’ songs is “Who’s going to fill their shoes”? (and none of the new country artists could even come close) I really miss the “old country” even the crying in my beer songs of the good old days.

I see the message of this song as an idea that I believe humanity has lost. It’s still within us all, but unfortunately most don’t value. The idea that anyone one of us can follow through on a commitment we make no matter what length of time that commitment is.

We played this song at my Daddys funeral 8/22. Everytime i heard this song it brought me to tears. This is the 1st time ive been able to listen to this song since he passed. Daddy raised us on good honkey tonk music.

I had the same reaction when I heard it the first time.
I was on my way to a camping trip when I heard George had died. His music had a way of transcending genre. We toasted him with bourbon that night. Rednecks, hippies, bankers, and waitresses all raised a glass.

This is why George Jones was the greatest country music singer ever. He was a storyteller and he sang with raw emotion. In his book I lived to tell it all he said he didn't want to sing this song because he didn't like to narrate. He recorded it anyway and was his biggest hit ever and George had alot of hits! He had a top 10 song every decade for 60 yrs! That's true talent. There will never be another that can fill his shoes! He recorded that song also, who's gonna fill their shoes. Nobody! Country isn't country anymore. I still listen to country music but nobody is gonna remember the 1 hit wonders of today 50 yrs from now. It's commercial its not real and it won't last. Listen to any of George's love songs and you will feel them. It tugs at your heart. I was lucky enough to see him live and it was the greatest concert I ever went to. It was an honor to be in his presence hearing him sing. One of George's heroes was Hank Williams he is another that sang with that raw emotion and very few singers can bring tears to my eyes George Jones can!
I heard this song so many times growing up. George Jones was a particular favorite of my Dad's and this song, the story telling in it, is amazing. Recently I realized how much this mirrored my own parents, unfortunately cancer took my mom away, but my dad loved her till his dying breath. Thank you for reacting to it 🙂

I’m 70 and grew up in country music, my father was leader of a popular country band from 1948 to 19 67, my brothers also for 10 years. George Jones is an ICON in the country music world, a musical vocal with gut feelings. Listen to his song “ The Chrystal Chandelier “ amazing career forever loved.

I have an uncle who was just diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. This song will be in my memorial to him. He only loved one woman his whole life. They got married 3 times and divorced 3 times. This song has always reminded me of the two of them. She loved him too, but they just couldn’t live together and make it work.

One of the best country songs ever. After he finished recording the song he said, “this is the saddest song I’ve ever heard”. If you want to really get into their story, and when I say they, I’m talking about George and Tammy, you should watch the series by the same name on Showtime or Paramount. Their lives together seemed to be written in the songs they recorded before they were together and most certainly after they were married and sadly divorced. They were the original “power couple” in country music. When you understand their story, and you listen to other songs by George, like The Race Is On, it brings a whole new meaning and context to a song he recorded before they were ever together. This song was written about my deceased husband's parent's. Phillips Lamar Jones and Helen Faye Barge. He loved her so much and she loved him as well. The love letter's dated in 1962 the year my deceased husband Herman Lamar was born.

George Jones was a country music icon. His first big hit was White Lightning. He performed from the early 1950's until his death in 2013. Golden Ring, Two Story House, The Race is On, Still Doin' Time, If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me, and I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair, are a few of his hits. I saw him in concert in the late 1990s and he was fantastic.
I so appreciate your attention to this classic song. Nobody sings the sad songs like George. My paternal grandparents divorced when my dad was a young teenager. This was one of my very unsentimental dad's favorite songs, but I didn't realize until after he died of leukemia in 1989 that it was because that's how he felt about my mom - till death do you part. She kept loving him and being his wife until she died of pneumonia in 2015, and then they were together again forever.

I seen George Jones a day before my birthday 1 year before he died in my home town where I was born raised and still live today. It was one of the best birthday presents a guy could ask for. He could hardly sing by then though, it was my very first concert so I figured his voice was just giving out from singing so much. I didnt realize how ill he was. Seeing him right there in the flesh, a man I would listen to for hours at a time throughout the week, right in front of me. Its a unique fascinating feeling.

One of my favorite songs of all time. Mr. Jones was an incredible artist. But yes, the crux of the story is that he loved her until the day he died. If he had moved on or not was a moot point, because if he did or not, he still loved her.

George married Tammy Wynette (mentioned in the early part of the clip) in 1969 and they divorced in 1975. George released this song in 1980. George did move on and did remarry. I think this song was about how he felt at that time and he was projecting out to the end of his life. But the magic of Tammy & George is only matched by Stevie & Lindsey. The sheer chemistry is magical!

Yep if you don't pay attention to the very first line in the song "He said I'll love you till I die" the meaning of the chorus almost slips by you it takes a minute for people to realize the magnitude of what he said.

TIP : when u listen to these "old ones" ..meaning the old country songs...u can't listen with a "modern" view point..or with the standard for how things are these days..I have to listen how they lived back then..see there was a time when when people fell in love they stayed in love... Until her last days... They travel this life through all the hardships trials and ups and downs imaginable together..when u loved someone it was with everything inside of u...right down In ur soul and bones...
Not saying that peeps don't love these days...jus saying it's different.. seems a lot easier for peeps to discard things ..so u really have got to listen to these old songs in a different kind of way..
The relationship he is talking about in the song was by no means one that a person could move on from in just a lil while...they were together for a long time...but there was "that thing" she had stood by him through..asked him to "change" mabey.. an she reached that point that she had to go...it hurt her as much as it did him ...and so he died loving her..and she came to see him one last time because she still in her heart still loved him...that's how I've always thought about it anyways..🙂

I grew up as a metal fan but around 2000 I took my father in law to see George Jones and I have to say he put on a great show..

The emotion you felt is one of the reasons this is considered by most true country fans to be the #1 country song of all time. George Jones was a legend. One of my favorites is “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me Her Memory Will”.
