Purple Heart Day is celebrated on the 7th of August, and while we usually don't seek anniversary dates to publish our episodes on, this one lined up pretty well. In any case, this episode is not about a song or a person, but about the origin story of a military decoration. We personally think that this worked out pretty well, and we hope that you do too! If you do, please consider supporting us on Patreon so we can continue making more videos like this one -> www.patreon.com/sabatonhistory
(US Army) In WW1 those wounded or gassed were authorized to wear a chevron on the lower left sleeve of the uniform coat. It was a PFC stripe so no special medallion or ribbon was created or produced. What's confusing is the PFC stripe was used in the same location to note overseas service. To date I haven't found any memos or directives covering the use and positioning of either award. I'm not sure if there was a difference in how the stripe was mounted, for example...stripe pointed down vs pointed up. A great uncle was in WW1 and his jacket had the stripe but we didn't know of his jacket until after he died.
Sabaton History for some reason this song makes me think of the Battle of Hill 400

“Alright, here’s a medal honouring those who have done great deeds in combat”
McArthur: “gimmegimmegimmegimmegimmegimme”
That illustrates so vividly the narcissistic, pompous character of Douglas "BugOut Doug" MacArthur.

I was going to bring up the same point, but you guys beat me too it.
Had to do a report on that pussy and the more I found out the more I have disdain for a coward like him. When I was training cadets at west point one of the females though she was going to be funny and say she wanted to be just like him. Long story short, by the time I was done she was in tears and few others, that thought her comment was funny, wouldn't even look me in the eye. If it was my call he would be stripped of all awards and rank.
Although you see more and more officers claiming injury to get a purple heart. It's so bad I've seen a lieutenant get one for bumping his hand on a Humvee and claim it was a snipers ricochet. Yet fighting men with chronic injuries, due to their injuries, received nothing.
Good song. I like it.

Sadly, but then why learn when all you have to do is say "thank you for your service" and never think of it again? The "Last of the Light Brigade" by Kipling is as relevant as always.
Military History is ignored in most educational systems. They only look at the general or encompassing point. So no its not that they know more, its the base of more is not taught

Education was never meant to educate the people, it was meant to indoctrinate them.

While I know not what he did to be awarded it, I do know that this small piece of metal and fabric must have an amazing story tied to it.
It's a shame you don't know the story behind the medal. Would be interesting to dig that story up.

gillecroisd 92 ^ sadly CZcams doesn’t like history channels that don’t align with their beliefs (whether neutral like SH or completely opposite of their views). Just look at how they are banning history channels and banned Knight SGC because he promoted “hate speech” threw his Ghost Division music video.
Cherish this channel while it exists, because who knows how much longer they have before CZcams claims hate speech.

I'm really glad you mentioned the manufacturing/stockpiling of Purple Hearts for the estimated number of casualties of Operation Downfall. I once did a paper on the proposed invasion and came across that information, really did open up my eyes when I thought about it and it really needs to be talked about more nowadays.
You're welcome!
Nothing conveys just how horrified everyone was at the grim prospect of Downfall as that does. The sheer scale of what they expected to lose hits hard. Then you find out just how much more prepared the home islands of Japan were, how far they intended and expected to fight compared to the estimates. We know most of the preparations because of how sudden the end was, and the realistic projection that they would have needed to make more Purple Hearts? That chills the soul.
Has Indy watched 'The Pacific' yet?

Interesting how an old song got rewritten for what I see as one of the most memorable tracks of _Primo Victoria_
I like how the chorus has a bit of a melancholic atmosphere to it, to emphasize that this medal isn't awarded to just any soldier, but one who is willing to give his own life to save that of others. It still gives me chills whenever I listen to it.
We salute those who have given their lives and minds to protect this great country of America.
Thank you for everything, you brave Souls.
Another Purple Heart recipient was Sergeant Stubby of the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Yankee Div. He received his for heroism and being wounded in action. He was wounded twice during the 17 battles in which he fought. With no regard for his own safety, he would run out into No Man's land to find wounded soldiers and alert the medics to their location. At the Battle of the Argonne, he also captured a German spy single-handedly and held the man until his unit came back for him. He was a hero and deserves his own Sabaton song, IMO. He was a high speed, low drag pitbull. 🤘😁🍺
My grandfather is 92 years old. When he was in Korea he was hit by a enemy mortar and was taken out of the fight for a while. He never received a purple heart :(
You can now apply for one posthumously at the Ministry of Defense.
Jon Blumming the Dutch Judo expert and Korea veteran, despite being from the Dutch army, also received the purple heart. Actor and singer Rijk de Gooijer (Dutch) received the medal for his wound he sustained near Nijmegen in 1944 and joined the allied forces.
This song made me cry because it reminded me of my great grandfather, which he told stories to us when he was alive about his experiences in World War II. I can’t remember much of it because I was still quite young when he passed away. Purple Heart has to be my favourite song.
You know, MacArthur would make a good subject for a Sabaton song, from "I shall return" to "just fadeaway". Heck, call it American Caesar. And slip in a few riffs from Jimmy Webb's MacArthur Park to make a few of us laugh.
I hope that Sabaton at some point, will make an official Sabaton version of the Area51 cover song of Fields of Verdun. if for no other reasons than it would be hilarious.
Maybe they'll play it live when playing a gig near the place, but I doubt they'll actually release it

It’s great to see a group of guys, a band even better, from a different country who dont have that “America sucks” attitude. Love you Sabaton. You too Indy!
They're apolitical. Respect given to all brave soldiers and heroes on all sides. It's a tough line to walk, but they do it.
Thank you, Sabaton, for Honoring America's Heroes! You're more patriotic than a number of people who live in this country. I would love to just sit and talk with you guys about military history. I am a combat vet (Iraq 07/08), my wife is a combat vet (Iraq multiple tours) (still serving after 21 years) my mother was the first female in the Air National Guard, my father served in the Army in Korea, my father-in-law served in the Navy during Vietnam, my grandfather and great uncle both served in Germany in WWII, I have several family members who served during WWI, and I have several family members who served the Union Army during the Civil War. At least those are the ones that I know about, I may have had family members serve in other conflicts as well that I don't know about yet.
Now that I am sitting here thinking about it, my family has been involved in wars going back the last six generations. Damn, that hits me like a ton of fucking bricks. Hopefully, one day my family will know peace.
My big little brother has one. I'd give all the world to have him instead. 😭💔🇺🇸 💜
9:38 There's an interesting story behind that clip that I'd love to know. Looks to be a US soldier in a Huey with an MP38 or 40.
I’m not going to claim to be an expert on the subject, But I think it’s more likely that the gun you’re talking about is the swedish made “Kulsprutepistol m/45”. If you want to learn more about it check out this link here: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Gustav_m/45
Probbablly an MP40. Either a soviet supplied one too the northern forces and later captured or a former French or CIA weapon.
Milleniumsword, you might be right( I do not know enough about the weapons used during the vietnam war to say that you’re wrong. However what I do know is that for a short period swedish companies exported a lot of m/45s to the us armed forces. Which from the right angle can actually look pretty similar to an mp40.
Members of the NVA and VC were well known for using weapons from all over the world (they used what ever they could get their hands on) and there were many case of US soldiers picking up such weapons either as keepsakes or as a extra backup weapon.
Still not sure how my grandfather got a WW1 Imperial German Luger P-08 but he got it while he was there.
@@adamjones6944 there's a story going around about a US soldier who was old enough to have served in WW2 who recalled hearing the distinctive sound of a MG42 being fired at his men, they were unable to capture the men and the weapon, but 8mm Mauser casings were found in the area
My Uncle, Kenneth F Lopes received the Purple Heart during Korea, while serving in the US Army. 23rd Regiment 2nd Infantry Division.
I know a lot of people don't like the U.S, particularly the modern country, but it's awesome to see Sabaton make a song about honouring our fallen, and it's nice to see people from around the world appreciate our country for the good things we've done. I understand not liking the U.S. from a foreign perspective, but it's great to see people are grateful for what we have given to their countries in the past.
FOR SABATON: Some Veteran friends introduced your group and songs to a Disabled American Veterans meeting not long ago and also advised us of the Sabaton History clips which are surprisingly factual with all the altered versions that exist out there. Needless to say we are in the process of getting albums and doing our own analysis of each song (no complaints to date). Though prior to my own era (having served 1971-1995 in the Air Force with multiple combat tours), I have always been miffed at few actually know that that iconic Marine Memorial of the flag raising at Iwo Jima in world war 2 was actually for a publicity shot since some commanders wanted a larger more visible flag displayed. The first group of Marines actually braved enemy sniper fire to get their flag hoisted...but to the masses are all but forgotten. Probably the best article can be found here: nationalinterest.org/blog/raising-flag-iwo-jima-story-one-most-famous-photos-all-time-26421 Would love to see that original group remembered and immortalized in song. Thank you not just for your great band, but for reminding so many of history. Salute.
and if those wounded of mind and spirit are deemed not eligible for the purple then there should be a separate award for such wounds, for wound they are indeed.
I'm from the town where Washington handed out the first Purple Hearts during the Revolutionary War! (Newburgh, NY)

The pantagon thinks PTSD is "treatable"!? My god... In that case losing a leg shouldn't qualify for the purple heart, after all you can "treat" it by getting a prosthetic. Absolutely ridiculous.
There is actually a unit that had the nickname "Purple Heart Battalion"
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/442nd_Infantry_Regiment_(United_States)
My late grandfather, William Clarence Bunch Jr., was awarded the Purple Heart. He fought in World War II and was the sole survivor of a tank explosion when they drove over a landmine; he lost his left leg as a result. I don't know if his fallen comrades were also awarded the PH posthumously, but I think they deserve it. Most likely it was awarded posthumously to their families.
My grandfather would have loved to hear this song. He passed away back in 2000 just before Christmas, after two decades of battling various health issues, but fought till the end like the warrior he was.
Thank you Sabaton for such a beautiful and moving tribute to my grandfather, his comrades, and all who have been wounded and killed in the heat of battle. ✊✊✊✊✊
A great episode Sabaton. My grandfather was a receipt of the Purple Heart from the Korean War and it was great to see all the history of the medal told in such a cool way. And because you have me thinking of my grandpa I have a topic suggestion for Sabton The Battle of the Chosin Reservoir and the Chosin Few.
My grandfather received two purple hearts around 2007 . might have been earlier. I remember the sentiment around that being "it's about time."
If I remember correctly he was with the marines as a cook and got hit by shrapnel on Guadalcanal, and shot on Okinawa.
He also was witness to the pearl harbor attack, though he was stationed a few miles inland.
Interesting episode, Never knew the history behind the medal.
This makes me wish we got a Sabaton album based off of the Revolutionary war
I can't place my words but im so happy that the soliders who died or got injured are remembered as heroes.
This episode brought me to tears.
PTSD should definitely be a reason for the Purple Heart. My father suffers from PTSD from his years in service and trust me *he's still wounded.*
This. PTSD can be very cruel. IN World War 1, it sometimes led to soldiers being treated as cowards, and shot. However, people with PTSD are in urgent need of medical treatment, and care. They should be eligible for the Purple Heart.

God damn, it takes 45 years for an entire batch of medals to run out when you originally manufactured them for one operation. Like it or not, those nukes and also the Russian intervention did it's job well to prevent a disaster.
Gott sei dank!!! They didnt fire Atombomben!!! LG Alex🤘
The full 'WWII stockpile' ran out in 2000, the US had build up nearly a 1,5 million reserve of the decoration for us through the entire conflict. The high number of expected casualties for the invasion of Japan itself, particularly after the much tougher than anticipated battle for the Pacific, is one of the reason the US decided to go with an atomic attack.
Though there were more than half a million Purple Hearts left after the second World War, the number 'allocated' to Japan is quite significant as that number is essentially the total number of US casualties from the conflicts that followed in Korea, Vietnam, both Gulf Wars, and Afghanistan combined. Such loss of life, in quite a few cases over utter pointless and at times fully illegal conflicts. Tragic!
@@hephesto555666 yeah we live in a better nuke world than if operation downfall happened. Kinda insane to think saying the nukes "saved lives"
@@kstreet7438 It's a fascinating, if not somewhat chilling, event to think about. Naturally we're going into 'what if' on a lot of this stuff, very difficult for example to estimate how high the number of Japanese casualties could have been in the case of a protracted land war (or on the conscripted peoples of the region like the Seediq who were thrown at the Americans in places the Japanese thought were too hard to fight over and who had already suffered years to decades of cultural genocide at the hands of their imperial overlords).
That said a lot of historians don't actually think the nuclear attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima themselves were what eventually pushed imperial Japan to surrender.
Naturally it was another big drop in a quickly filling bucket, but even on the US' side of the conflict it wasn't the biggest or highest casualty attack on a civilian target during the battle for the Pacific. Tokyo, which along with nearly 70 other cities, was hit with conventional bombing and had a higher civilian casualty number. All of which did very little to sway the desperate last stand approach of a large segment of the Japanese army.
The final and vital drop in the bucket is generally seen as the Sovjet Union's declaration of war on Japan. With that juggernaut, finally, focusing its attention on the empire of the rising sun their forays into the region in the hopes of expansion (as well as a desperate need for resources like oil and rubber in part driven by US trade blockades earlier in the war) would have become impossible. In the words of deputy chief of staff Torashiro Kawabe "The absolute maintenance of peace in our relations with the Soviet Union is one of the fundamental conditions for continuing the war."
Then there's always the theoretical 'what if' scenario what would have happened should the US have delayed the nuclear attacks for a couple of days (for, I don't know, a technical problem lets say)? There's only three days between the bombs and Sovjet Union joining the conflict, while six days later Japan unconditional surrendered. Could this all have been avoided by a week's long delay, would we look at nuclear power and weapons differently if they hadn't been deployed on civilian targets in WWII. Food for thought!
The nukes were argued to be unnecessary by the commanders in the Pacific theatre and it isn't hard to see why. Japan's war council had met to discuss surrender before the first bomb was dropped. The Soviet invasion of Manchuria had shaken their faith in the Imperial Japanese Army's ability to fend off Downfall. The only reason the bombs were dropped is because Truman was intent on unconditional surrender. Acceding to the one condition the Imperial war council had(the safety and continued rule of the emperor) would have saved all of the lives lost in the atomic bombings as well as the projected casualties for Downfall.
Purple heart was the first song that I heard from sabaton. I was sold immediately. Great episode once again!
Thank you for this.
I am a medal collector (I have been longer than I have been a fan of Sabaton), I really appreciate this video a lot. I think medals can tell a hell of a story without the veteran being there to tell it. Sadly, I see far too many wind up in the trash or in the hands of ungrateful grandchildren who don't care about what granddad did in the war and who would sell them for next to nothing, I'll gladly take them to preserve their history and stories if I can. Someone has to care about veterans in this country.
I gave Hannes a cased WW2 era Purple Heart after their show in Houston, TX. I gave every member of the Swedish War Machine a medal that is mentioned in a song or has significance to a song or event. I gave four that Lauri Törni earned [Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Iron Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross], Tommy got an Order of the Red Star [for Hill 3234, each Soviet soldier at the battle received one of these awards]), I hope they liked them! :D
Thanks for the excellent video guys, the Operation Downfall order of Purple Hearts is largely unknown by a lot of Americans.

This one got me a little emotional. My technical training instructor, much like a father figure to an 18-year old version of myself freshly enlisted in the Air Force, received the Purple Heart as a result of the Khobar Towers attack. He passed in December of 2016 and is dearly missed. Rest in Peace, retired Air Force Master Sergeant Craig T. Brown.
Didn't know the history of the Purple heart was that complex in a way. I often would look at my grandfather's medals he earned in Vietnam and Iraq and the Purple heart he earned in Vietnam always stood out (He actually was supposed to earn two but the document was lost and the government didn't recognize it.). Actually I didnt even know there was a day for purple hearts till now. Awesome episode as always though!
Still seems wrong that PTSD isn't counted. It can be treated, sure, but it can't really be cured.
And technically, you can treat an amputee. Their logic is flawed at best, and the heart ought to be awarded for wounds of the mind as well.
I think one of the issues is because an physical wound can be easily documented, ie "PVT Smith was wounded on 5APR05 outside of Kabal" while a singular even may or may not cause PTSD or it might take several years before a Veteran may even know they have PTSD and is effected by it, or even at all. Like all military awards, and especially ones that grant you special benefits documentation is a very important thing and going back and documenting events that aren't that clear cut is a very hard thing to do.
Should we wait an episode of Sabaton History about The Attack of Dead Men?
