  • In this Zoom session, we met to play with the Cricut engrave tool to make cute little metal stamping blanks.
Using the engrave tool and the Cricut Maker we were able to engrave names onto small metal stamping blanks. The purpose of the tags is for purse/wallet tags. Other fun ways to use this technique would be custom pet tags, wine glass charms, magnets, charm bracelets, and gift tags.
Many of the steps we discussed today would be useful for anyone attempting to use the engrave tool for the first time.
While these tags are not a perfect substitute for commercially-made laser-etched tags, they're pretty darn cute!
    We discussed how to:
    *Load the engrave tool
    *Select and filter writing fonts
*Position the tag on the mat
*Select the proper mat and tape
    *Select the material type
*Use text box tools such as resize, aspect ratio, align, attach, spacing, ungroup to letters
    *Duplicate an object
*Changing engrave settings to write style versus outline style
*Select an image and change it to engrave
*Double etching/re-run the Cricut option versus pressure settings
*Apply UV resin for a finishing touch.
NOTE: This was just an informal meet-up. No professional camera set ups, no professional lighting. Really, no professional anything - just me jumping in with you to see if we could make it work.
I apologize for the squeaky chair and the less than pleasing squeals as I pivoted my laptop. Let's see how much better I can get at this over time!

I’ve seen a couple of videos where you duplicate the text 3-4 times, select all, center, attach and the blade will engrave 4 times.

Oh! I'll have to try that next time. Thanks so much for the tip!

How thick are these blanks? Also I watched you when you did the ones with epoxy and I was wondering which do you feel worked the best?

I’m not sure about the thickness - probably a little less thick than a nickel. I much prefer the water slide metal rectangle version.

Hi Krystal! I noticed when you picked your font, you couldn't see your words (Charming) on the font samples, just the quick brown fox - does the Maker not show you your words?

Hi! You can only see your words back on the canvas. It’s a definite drawback of the DS platform.
The text functionality is one of my least favorite things about DS.
However, you CAN design everything in your silhouette business program and upload your finished project into DS to cut/engrave.
