High Speed Ski Crash over 200kph (120mph) Juanki Sanchez

- High speed ski crash!!! Juanki Sanchez came down at over 200kph after losing a ski. He was racing with me today in VARS at the World Record attempt on the fastest ski slope on this planet! He miraculously escaped with just burns and bruises from crashing at a speed higher than the terminal velocity of a sky diver!! It’s incredible how he fought to continue on one ski... Could Bode Miller have done better?!
Our helmets are specifically designed so that the outer shell breaks away from the inner helmet, avoiding further injury to the back/shoulder area, it worked perfectly on this occasion. Juanki then took the inner helmet off just as he was sliding to a halt.
We’ll update below how he’s doing. - Sport
Im very impressed by the the way he managed stay in control from first second all the way to the end. If you pay attention, he manages to ski through obstacles even after he lost one leg and then slows himself down by "braking" in natural positions. And its all at 200 kmh! What a professional!
I am training to be a professional ski racer and one thing we have to know is how to ski on one ski in the case of a situation like this!
He also managed to prevent his head from hitting the ground
no the skii wigless because of the velocity. The good thing he did was to land on the side and not get his ski on his head

All things considered, that was a good fall
You should check some of the others ;)
@@JanFarrell I was watching the video ( czcams.com/video/KvOs-_y7RCI/video.html ) of Chad Fleischer's downhill crash at Kitzbuehl. He said the worst part was when he tried to dig his boot (which an exploded ski attached) into the snow to stop. You speed freaks seem to know not to stick your legs out!
you're a good fall
Not really you can see his foot doing a 360 turn (and probably breaking everything in there) at 0:32

Amazing exercise in damage limitation. He managed to slow himself down on one ski before falling. Very impressive.
That's just bullshit. You know nothing about skiing. Don't make a fool out of yourself.
bro at this point gravity took over there's no way he has any control going 120mph on one ski💀
@@showstopper2014 oh shut up. Insulting someone for no reason is super childish lol
@@picklepirate he’s not insulting him. If you try to say that he had control when he had one ski, off balance and going 120 mph, you are making yourself look like a fool.
Watch back, how many people could stay on one ski for that long at that speed?
Tbh, that crash turned out really well for him. I’m sure it hurt like hell but he didn’t seem to have his body go in any unnatural positions
tghanks for your honesty roflmao
No kidding! I dislocated my shoulder and tore my knee’s ACL, MCL & meniscus all at only 40mph. He’s super lucky but I’m sure he also knew how to fall a lot better
@@hawk_flawk I think it's more the fact that the run he is on has had every last imperfection groomed out of it, so he's just sliding.

Might look ridiculous, but it takes giant balls to put that suit on and ski that fast
The fact that the helmet doesnt even stay on
The helmet isn’t even designed to offer protection, but just to make it aerodynamic.

Well done recovery. Guy almost hockey stopped on one ski, then went with the momentum. Probably got some bruises but looks like he avoided any major injuries.
Amazing athletic performance, agree! He was OK and racing the following week.
I was hoping his knee wouldn’t buckle under all that pressure …!!
If by almost stopped you mean he crashed still going fast enough to get a speeding ticket on the highway? Then yes. I mean it was an incredible effort, especially not to just get ripped over. But luck too played a roll.

As a past long time speed skier the comments below show a lack of basic understanding of the sport. In my analysis I would point out that he was getting a very wide stance the farther down the course he traveled and also that he seemingly unintentionally crossed over from right to left side of the track ...once he was too wide in stance he classically caught his inside edge...definitely NOT the fastest fall on record. But none the less a mind blower for him at the time!...glad he was able to walk away and speed again another day!
Thanks for that! The variety of comments is mind blowing :D
he rode one ski well!
As a skiier who has gone ~100 why do you guys go straight? Seems like you would have way more control making small arcs or something
Not a real accessible sport there buddy
@@oceanceaser44 i’m guessing this is in normal skiing, this event is just trying to go as fast as possible so they just go straight down, it’s perfectly straight so they just do tiny movements so they don’t fall over but don’t zigzag like recreational skiers do
I am so happy that he looks ok, congrats.
Feelings you never get too often. Riding on 1 ski for 200km/h
that was pretty smart of him actually, he wanted to be sure that he doesn't have any severe injury that might get unnoticed at the moment due to the high fight or flight response; it would be terrible if he would snap a nerve or something while getting up because of the adrenaline..
For a moment there he could have broken the record on one ski.
That would have made this record literally unbreakable.
I would have trouble keeping my skis straight at 20 km/h
i was skiing today. my maximum i got down the steepest hill was 71kmh shit was fun
ıɹǝʞǝǝu Hah did 107 today 😂
I've my best is 95km/h and its so fucking fast
Juse lol not really...
@@PhaseSkater Yes it's so fast try it, can u feel 95km/h? Its fast.
I love how the paramedics don’t have a stretcher they just hoist him up and send him on his way 😆
Watching the skis delaminate is such a reminder of how fast and violent these crashes are, incredible that he was fine.
His damage limitation was superb. He slowed himself down while on the one ski by doing some turns. Glad he's okay.
yes, amazing!
Gotta buy his helmet.
At 0:28 it is clear that the function of the helmet had been the topic of much thought and skillful problem solving.
If you look closely, he had another helmet underneath the white, hood-like one, the latter was probably just for aerodynamics. He must have taken off the black helmet when he disappeared behind that mound halfway during the video
@@Falaxuper If I make the following change in accordance with your comment, what would your respons be? ”It is clear that the function of the aerodynamic head piece had been the topic of much thought and skillful problem solving.”
@@tb8573 Huh? Your original comment implied that you were mocking the white headpiece on the grounds that it came off easily, instead of staying on the head - to which I replied that the *actual* helmet did its job perfectly at protecting the wearer's head, sort of like an apples-oranges situation ('the white headpiece is very bad at being a helmet, because it's not a helmet').
Unless it was me who missed something, and you were unironically applauding the design and functioning of the white thingy as a purported helmet...

Text book crash right there. He held his balance long enough to turn around and roll down on the shoulderblades, the helmet did its job when he smashed his head, and finally he rode it out and didnt try to stop himself which would probably have given him a dislocated knee or the like. Had he fallen forward arms first I can almost guarantee he would have separated his shoulder

Hey guys, is there any proof, that he was really going 200 kilometres per hour? (I’m just curious)
Thanks a lot, greetings from Germany : )
I agree, did not look to be going that fast.
The fastest speed on this event is like 258 kilometres per hour so i’d say it’s more than likely it’s real, i doubt many world level athletes doing it are more then about 20 kilometres per hour slower

The way the ski just breaks apart at 0:20 is absolutely insane!!!
Lucky his leg didn't do the same. lol
harder to see but the 2nd ski snaps in half as well. really puts into perspective the amount of energy involved here

What are the big boxes behind his calves? Also crazy vid!! Glad he’s 👌🏼 ok
they make him more aerodynamic so more speed
Farings
Both skis were absolutely shredded. After the first ski came off he did a good job trying to control himself!
Yup!
My first thought when watching the crash initially was that he fell REALLY WELL! No twisting of his legs or knees, no end over end tumbling…very fortunate to have not injured himself badly!
I was a US Speed Skier in the early 1990's. I loaned a pair of speed skis to a novice racer for him to take a run since he only had one pair at that race. I got the skis back, re-adjusted the bindings for my boot, and jumpped off the top. What I didn't know was that he had changed the DIN settings. We always keep our DIN settings at 26. He changed mine (lowered it) without telling me. I took the run and broke tuck. It was a smaller course so I wasn't going as fast as this racer in this video, I was doing 104 MPH. I started to make my first large turn to start blowing off the speed, when I realised I was turing, but my ski was not. One of the toes was out of the toeclip of the binding, just hanging there by a thread. Then, just like that, the right ski was gone. All that went through my mind was, "Oh, this is gonna hurt real bad." I had a fraction of a second to react and all that occurred to me was I'd better try to break as hard as I can and blow off as much speed as I could before inpact, so I shifted and put all my weight on my left leg and just laid it down sideways as hard as I could on my remaining ski, just digging it in with everything I had. Somehow, I was able to hold it and hold on, and came to a stop on one ski from over 100MPH. I narrowly averted what I thought was an absolute crash. Just after that, there was a mix up with the FIS Starters. They sent the next racer and I almost got hit by the next racer when I was picking up my ski, I dove out of the way & he (Floyd Conradi) jumped over my ancles at 100MPH but that's a story for another day! Cheers

darn good work on one ski
The way that ski ripped apart was incredible. The amount of force required rip apart epoxy laminated skis is just insane, I would never expect that part to fail.
Yeah really shows how this could be so much more gruesome if he fell just a bit differently, crazy.
These skis are made for speed only and so are made differently so that they can easily detach when falling to avoid any injuries. These are not slalom skis ..
@@topfitnessssss most skis are made to easily detach while falling, but are they designed to detach and delaminate as well?
@@notaberger_3216 I'ld def say so yes like 99.999%

One of the most painful things I've ever done was catching an edge snowboarding, flipping, and landing on a buttock on an icy piste. Being in immense pain and unable to do anything about it as I was continuing to slide down the mountain on my ass was the suckiest thing of all time. It was the first run on the first day of the holiday. Could barely board for the rest of it and the blackest bruise you've ever seen came up a week later.
poor baby... must have been terrible.

When you wear a helmet that’s aerodynamic but useless in a crash.
At the end his slippery ass suit was like “WE AINT OUTTA THIS RACE YET”

It may be somewhat counterintuitive, but getting bad burns is one of the big dangers of falling on snow at these speeds!! ⛷️🔥😳
There's a lot of friction (weirdly) going on there!
Indeed. The energy released in friction to slow him down.
I don't think anyone's mentioned the fact his outfit looks sus, best keep it that way
It's funny, how you mostly see the speed when they crash.
Huge respect for these people.
Anyone else remember ABC’s Wide World of Sports? “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat”
kinda sus
It was impossible to try to stop just with a single ski a that speed
It was certainly worth a try, can you imagine he succeeded? He'd be world-famous ;)
Looked like a very smooth and controlled bail, but painfull none less. Bad grooming on the side of the piste? Was this at Vars ?
Looks quite fun actually. Nice slide
Pretty sure you could wear his outfit on any catwalk in the world without sticking out.

Friction burns anybody....
Rere West On a snow? RLY?
yes they get very bad friction burns from the heat built up from there suits sliding against the course texture of the snow.
Gramatický Komunista Friction burns are one common injury downhill skiers and downhill snow mountain bikers have to deal with. Their in thin neoprene or polyester skin suits and once you fall at high speed friction heats up suit as skier slides over hard ice and snow , basically burning the material and causes burns...nasty ones .
Rere West Oh, that sounds painfully...
He's gotta get some sort of medal for that run, at least a ribbon!
So much fiction is created from sliding on the snow like that, that the suit can melt into his skin.
