255.5kph SPEED SKI WORLD RECORD 2023, Fastest non-motorised humans on the planet.
Simon Billy (FRA) beat the World Record on 22 March 2023 with a speed of 255.500kph (158.760mph). The previous record was held since 2016 by Ivan Origone (ITA) at a speed of 254.958kph (158.424 mph). His brother, Simone Origone, had held 3 world records since 2006. The women's record is 247.038kph (153,502mph), held by Valentina Greggio (ITA) since 2016.
First hand, racing in Vars, the mecca of speed, Simon and I tell you about the new World Record broken by him.
I could not miss the opportunity to be present at such an important moment in the history of Speed Ski. Simon Billy's record is the reward for many years of work and I couldn't be more proud of him.
He came back, stronger, after a brutal crash in 2017. You can see it on my channel.
Skiing over 200 kilometres per hour is something reserved for few: there are more people that have gone to space than skiers in the 200kph club.
Thanks to Vars (© AIR LIBRE PROD) and Louis Billy for their images. First few seconds of intro action shots from Grandvalira. Rest of footage shot in 2023 in Vars, March 2023, during our World Championships and World Cup finals.

Today Speed Ski has come to Spain for the first time. Unfortunately COVID-19 (coronavirus) has forced the cancellation of the World Cup race this weekend in Formigal. We made this media run to show you the track, and I clocked a GPS speed of 145kph. A special thanks to Formigal and Ricardo Adarraga for pushing this opportunity to showcase our sport. We are looking forward to racing here next year!

He didn’t lie he actually did it
Stupid sexy Flanders !
o la la bla bla bla
some say he is still sliding down that slope..
Traveling too fast !
Just came back from a week skiing in vars, insane to think the world record fastest ski happened there
Once did 165 km/h while skiing the so-called “kilometre lancé” in France: scared the sh.. out of me; can only imagine and shudder in horror at the idea of falling at this speed. The guy must have titanium ‘coh-nes’
Hahaha! 165kph, good on you!
So what's the point of the helmet exactly
Protection, only the outer part comes off in case of a crash.
This was the best wintersports discipline at Olympics!
It actually looks pretty easy
It is, don't stress ;)

Please publish your comments about the incomprehensible and arbitrary squalification of Simone Origone at Vars competition for defects in the material.
I wouldn't call it incomprehensible or arbitrary, but I wasn't there.
Those flags were not made men
We need more of this in Speedski. Marketing of our sport is really important!
Thanks Christer!
Unbelievable speed
For info, it takes 6 secondes from 0 to 200km/h
😂😂😂
No matter how hard I try I just can't get my calves that big
How are you training?
he cannot go faster because he's made of 8 bits
His binding detached and his ski instantly delaminated - that's crazy.
Deceleration is a powerful phenomenon
Baumgartner attained 1340 kph. A lot faster.
Without atmosphere, yes.
@@keirfarnum6811 And without skis😄
Not exactly "on" the planet?
@@JanFarrell That's a matter of definition.
wouldnt the fastest non motorized humans be falling at terminal velocity?
Is that "on" the planet, or falling towards it?
@rellyou know what fair enough lol that does mean we can go faster than this though
I would not take this record because of that awful stupid hat 😂
Hahaha
I’m 61 and last year I did 275 kph with no power, and I know others who have been faster. Just saying…………..
61? Wow. Based on your comment i'd say you're 12. 😅 Just sayin'...
Oh dear :D
My glider has a top airspeed speed of 270kph, at an altitude of 2,000 metres that’s 300 kph plus. More with a tail wind. Mind you, I’ve done 98 kph on skis, when I was thirty ish, and it was only 1000 times scarier than my glider is…… I take my hat off to these skiing chaps, but I believe that Felix Baumgartner holds the world record for the fastest unpowered human at 1.25 Mach. Astronauts are powered up to Space. Don’t get tetchy, just a comment for fun….. 😎 PS., Twelve, I wish……
So stupid try turning…
Just show the footage without restarting it over and over next time... kinda undermined the specialness of it
It's difficult to show our speed on camera
@@JanFarrell fair enough but i think most people understand that these days and it was just frustrating to watch this over edited clip
What they don't mention is this man has an unfair advantage. His massive balls help increase his momentum and maximise his speed.
They’re an alloy of tungsten and depleted uranium encased in a steel and titanium alloy shell. A definite advantage for him.
Hahaha
From a quick google search: *In a stable, belly-to-earth position, terminal velocity of the human body is about 200 km/h (about 120mph). A stable, freefly, head-down position produces a speed of around 240-290 km/h (around 150-180 mph).* So he reached around the head down freefall speed on skis...
I was wondering about this, thanks for saving me the research! That is insane.
This depends on altitude. Felix Baumgartner was the First human to break the sound barrier in freefall, completed the Highest freefall parachute jump (38,969.4 m / 127,852 ft) and achieved the Fastest speed in freefall (1,357.6 km/h / 843.6 mph).
Yup, nice and fast :)
good model biorobot. Z? or V? ooo no its hybrid
So how fast is that
Splunge mph
255 is just the beginning when I ski.
Hahaha!!
93 en snowboard 😂
Bien!!!!
I’d like to see them try it in mph!
Did you ever hear of conversion?
@@jeanbanbois3940 Mph is much faster than kph.

@@brianmgrim Don’t get me started on knots!

I bet i can go faster jumping out of an airplane with a parachute ;)
Without a parachute, for sure
The cycling speed record is higher than 255.5 km/h, namely 296.0 km/h.
Only when being drafted, so it doesn't count.
that record was riding behind a *motorised* truck
the non-motorised, non-downhill cycling record is 144 km/h
Agreed, but I assume Simon Billy did use a motorised lift to get uphill…
@w0ttheh3ll yeah, but to be fair, this ski slope doesn't look like non-downhill
While this is an astonishing record the fastest non-motorized human is 530km/h in sky diving
not even close...^^ 1 357,6 km/h. Felix Baumgartner.
We aren't exactly falling towards the planet, but already "on it". wouldn't that be like comparing planes with cars?
@@JanFarrell not really. Planes and cars don't have the same engines. Here, the guy just compares two humans. Non motorized humans. Powered by the same "engine", which is gravity. But the advantages of free fall are obvious, hence this massive difference of velocity.
Did he win?
Yes, World Champion
He just slid past my house
I just want to ask that, what skis do you use? I know that they are about 240 cm but whats the model?
We mostly use Atomic Redster Speed SKi 2m38, with a 96m radius.
@@JanFarrell where can i buy them?
can we talk about that outfit for a minute ?
You want one and you know it
The course looked like it was in terrible shape. His skis were getting pulled out from under him for pretty much the whole run. It was only a matter of time before he went down.
The course was OK, high speed does these things to you
Dang. That's serious badassery! 😮
debating to sell my 15" CLS 63 S for a 16" AMG GT S. Do you think its a good idea. I love my CLS but I like the GT S too & the 5.5 engine sounds great? plus I live in ny
GTS is bigger than it seems, slightly wider than the CLS I find. The sound of the GTS is phenomenal, although I find my CS63s more elegant.
Why do they need poles
I think for stability
Try skiing without poles; it’s very awkward. Besides the fact that poles are used to pole plant and signal beginning of turns in regular skiing, they do play a role in balance and stability. It’s a strange thing as one wouldn’t think they make that much difference, but they do. When I was a coach and had to ski without poles (carrying gates and drills, etc.), I just couldn’t ski the same. 🤷🏻♀️ -former ski racer
We use them for pushing off, for reference in our speed position and a little extra weight (they're allowed to be up to 1kg each). Also, it's in the rules we need them, although we would have no trouble doing similar speeds without them.
They could not put a couple of jumps like in freestyle?
Let's do it
Bro said fuck it I'm going down without the skis
What kind of shity helmet was that if he lost it?
Hi, we don't actually lose our helmets, but the outer shell comes off (if you look closely), which it's design to do.
@@JanFarrellweird, can you explain it more clearly?
