  • Simon Billy (FRA) beat the World Record on 22 March 2023 with a speed of 255.500kph (158.760mph). The previous record was held since 2016 by Ivan Origone (ITA) at a speed of 254.958kph (158.424 mph). His brother, Simone Origone, had held 3 world records since 2006. The women's record is 247.038kph (153,502mph), held by Valentina Greggio (ITA) since 2016.
    First hand, racing in Vars, the mecca of speed, Simon and I tell you about the new World Record broken by him.
    I could not miss the opportunity to be present at such an important moment in the history of Speed Ski. Simon Billy's record is the reward for many years of work and I couldn't be more proud of him.
    He came back, stronger, after a brutal crash in 2017. You can see it on my channel.
    Skiing over 200 kilometres per hour is something reserved for few: there are more people that have gone to space than skiers in the 200kph club.
    Thanks to Vars (© AIR LIBRE PROD) and Louis Billy for their images. First few seconds of intro action shots from Grandvalira. Rest of footage shot in 2023 in Vars, March 2023, during our World Championships and World Cup finals.

    From a quick google search: *In a stable, belly-to-earth position, terminal velocity of the human body is about 200 km/h (about 120mph). A stable, freefly, head-down position produces a speed of around 240-290 km/h (around 150-180 mph).* So he reached around the head down freefall speed on skis...

      IF you are wondering how it was done - look closely at the poster pics of his run, and see he is flying 2 inches above the snow! I met him at an event in Colorado, and saw the Atomic 240 skis he used (with the tips cut off at angle) and while it was super dangerous, some skiers find that if they move the skis out to the side, angle them just right, for the fraction of a second it takes to go thru the speed traps they are actually flying at very low altitude, dude.
      OH, also see he is using the new at the time ESS v.a.r. bindings, that allow them to be moved forwards and back to get the exact position that works best, perfect balance is needed, to do this 'trick'. {while ski shops HATED these bindings, they gave Austrian racers and now many others an advantage, esp. with short deep sidecut skis they are needed to get the right placement in the ski, on the hill, without tools}

      Try skiing without poles; it’s very awkward. Besides the fact that poles are used to pole plant and signal beginning of turns in regular skiing, they do play a role in balance and stability. It’s a strange thing as one wouldn’t think they make that much difference, but they do. When I was a coach and had to ski without poles (carrying gates and drills, etc.), I just couldn’t ski the same. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      We use them for pushing off, for reference in our speed position and a little extra weight (they're allowed to be up to 1kg each). Also, it's in the rules we need them, although we would have no trouble doing similar speeds without them.

      @@JanFarrell Yes i know, having been at speed events in the USA and taken a run or two trying out the course above Silverton, CO.. I know poles are required in the rules yet ought to read them. I began skiing without poles decades ago and know i am faster 'cruising' long carved turns without them. In theory a speed skier could be more aerodynamic and so go a few MPH faster without the poles.
      To add a tip - seeing a top speed skier from the early 80's, Knauss (dang would have to look up his name, my mind is gone from too many concussionz myself) along with the late great record holder for many years Steve McKinney, it was noticed he made a 'ugh' effort sound, pulling his feet up and pushing off on every little bump in the snow, making speed, and this is the differance between those going a little faster is they know to do this naturally. Even our great slalom champion Shiffrin, knows what it means to 'move my feet really, really, fast" not just fast but to 'make speed'.
      We also came up with - 'keep your hands up in front of your face'. Keep your head down and hands up, if you dare!
