The odd delivery that came to define his later performances was not a result of being high all the time. It was an affectation; yes, Mitch was a drug user in real life, but onstage the idea was to play an exaggerated version of a stoner and exploit the rhythm of that character's delivery to enhance the jokes. Mitch sat down, wrote jokes, and worked out the best phrasing and timing of the punchlines according to how the stoner character spoke. He would step off the stage and talk more or less like a regular person from Minnesota. Have you ever noticed how in later performances Mitch seems to almost have a southern accent when he pronounces certain words? That's because he's working the character. The real Mitch Hedberg had no southern accent. All that said, yes, there are some performances online from 2004/2005 where he is clearly losing his way (and the audience) and not sober, but that is something different.
Well said, comedy is such an art/ skill. Lee Hearts One thing that is consistent though, is that he seemed to leave the audience behind. They just didn't seem to get the jokes or his perspective until mid-performance. Weird. I find it difficult to comprehend why people are that slow on the up-take. It reminds me of something Roger Waters said about the storyline of "The Wall". He claimed many people just didn't "get it". My daughter, who was in her late teens at the time, watched "The Wall" movie, and understood it as good if not better than I did. Is she just smart or perceptive? In any case, both of my daughters "get jokes" of any style. They don't like Bill Maher like I do though. Too much of a male perspective, I think. Bill Burr is in the same category. Then again, I'm not very fond of very many female comedians. Sarah Silverman I just adore though. They put one of her concerts on NetFlix once and it didn't stay up there for more than 3 days. Then it disappeared. I think someone complained about the content (probably some religious nut bitched about it).
+N. Miller Cool story, Granpa. Also interesting question: why are people slow at getting jokes when you and your family are so quick? Maybe you could work a conclusion into your memoir
LionelWitchieWardrob Well, thank you for asking Lionel. Why is my family so quick to pick up on these kinds of jokes? Because they are intelligent people (although I think I'll have to keep my wife out of it, for reasons I won't get into here). Part of the reason we're intelligent is because we don't post fuckin' sarcastic comments on CZcams like you do, for starters. Secondly, we're Canadians, eh? According to statistics, we're one of the most educated people around, 60% have at least graduated college. Unlike the U.S., where education is abysmally inconsistent throughout the country, we have a wider frame of reference to draw from. When it comes to comedy, some of the best comedians come from Canada. I won't rattle off a list of names here because if you're even a bit knowledgeable about (or ah-boot) comedy, you'll know who I'm talking about. Many people who work behind the scenes in comedy come from Canada. Of course, you probably think it's American or something, but once in a while, read an article or a book. You'll be surprised what you'll learn if you do that. And thirdly, we're socially aware individuals. If you bothered to watch this video, you'll see that most of Mitch's performances begin with the audience sitting there, not laughing. Not because the jokes aren't funny... they're too slow to "get it". That doesn't mean they're necessarily dumb. Just slow on the uptake. They were probably expecting one thing, and they got something else entirely. That's how trained monkeys react to something new and different. These are the same people that watch daytime TV shows like Maury Povich or Jerry Springer and believe they're seeing a "new" show. So, that's why I can claim my family and I are a few IQ's higher than half of that audience Hedberg had to perform to in this video. Thank you for asking...
I love how whenever someone says I was from (INSERT STATE) people clap and hoot. Mitch even spun that around. You're the reason I left too. That kind of genius is rare. To mess with people AND make them laugh at it is amazing.

To mess with people AND make them laugh at it is amazing.
not really that rare tbh. Most comics play off the crowd response to location jokes like that.
"Yeah, that's why I left. Everybody always yells 'woo-hoo'."
I saw him early in 2003 in St Louis. He was super nice and sweet and signed a CD for me. I still have it and I love all his material. RIP Mitch Hedberg gone too soon. 1968-2005
I was so ready for a world with Mitch Hedberg hitting it big!

Please, explain it like I'm 5!
I was one of the slow ones with this one.
+Claudia Alicia lol sure Claudia I'll explain it for you.:-P I'll even explain it in a clever form of a question; here it is: it takes this planet earth take around 365.25 days to get back to its primary position in space. We, in English, call that one year; In science, it is known as one ________what, around the Sun, to "Bring it back."? :-P

It's sad that Mitch probably never knew how much of an impact he made on us.
Damn, this comment's truth actually hurts. He was on the verge of explosion, too. RIP Mitch.
crowds loved him reportedly n evidently
I met him after a show about 6 months before he died. I got to tell him that I, for me, he’s one of the greats up there with Cosby, Seinfeld, and Steve Wright. It cheered him up for me to tell him that.
Whats crazy is that he sounded more like he is in this video than his act. The man was a true artist of delivery.
Agreed. He inspired my style of standup comedy with quick 2 or 3 liners.
He’s inspired me to look up Mitch Hedberg videos on CZcams
Brilliant dude seriously, what makes me sad is i rarely hear people clap so often and applaud after a oneliner this dude was like just supreme , as an addict myself and artist of music it hurts to see someone that was so stricken with that inner pain and he is gone..RIP
I hope you're doing well now, even if you haven't conquered your demons just yet.
As a coke addict that has been clean for 63 months and a musician and an alcoholic all I can say is I hope things have gotten better for you and if not just try to find any little positive thing you can each day. Take note of the small little things that we all take for granted. It can be as simple as you turn the shower knob to the exact right temperature the first try or the smell of freshly cleaned sheets and blankets. It's easy to forget or ignore the minor pleasures in life and there are plenty to be found. Good luck on your journey. You are loved by someone.
Mitch was so ahead of his time, his comedy was so brilliant and we're all all missing him soo much!! RIP Brother .........you was the best!
I can listen to Mitchell all day.

I saw this video recently, never heard of Mitch Hedberg before .. but he is now my absolute favourite stand up. His delivery is perfect and is super modest too. So sad to learn of his passing. RIP to one of the greatest comedians.
Listen to Mitch a lot and pretty soon he crops up in your head every where. Who's had a club sandwich and not thought of Mitch?

How great would it be to be able to go back in time and just hang out with this dude?
I'm sure he would rather do heroin, but yeah I get ya
Andrew Joseph lol, you're probaby right.
I got to meet him. He was cool.
My selfish wish is just that. See him live, and shake his hand. Maybe ask him if he would break me off a piece of that kit kat bar.
Every time I go to subway I think of him.
Wow after having loved Mitch's content for so long (RIP), its crazy to see this footage from what must have been his beginnings, where he is without glasses, and also has a very very different demeanor on stage. This is super interesting to watch, from a person who really has enjoyed Mitch's comedy in it's later stages. Love ya Mitch!
What a legend. Huge shame that his humor didn't bring him the same joy it brings so many of his fans. R.I.P.
What? He died
@@RunIntoTheSkyNonprofit Yeah, back in 2005, he overdosed ob a whole hunch of drugs, in an apparent suicide. Over his career, he joked many times about overdosing being his way out, and on April 1st, he made fools of us all. Breaks my heart. In my opinion, he was one if the best.
I searched after I saw RIP and watched his life bio on the internet. So sad. He is always my favorite on XM radio so searched him out to listen more. Yeah. Great guy. Drugs take away so many good people
That studio apartment joke deserved more laughs. That was hilarious. RIP Mitch.

A really bad front end alignment on a car can pull you to the left or to the right
It took me about five seconds too, and then I thought it was the best joke in the set.
I didn't get that joke until you wrote it out in the comments.....
I think it takes a very special person to do clean comedy and the ones that are this good at it are genius. Bravo!!!👏👏👏👏

A line I use of his from That 70's Show but I insert Desert Storm...
"I didn't lose a leg in Vietnam to serve hot dogs to teenagers"
Kelso: "You have both your legs"
"Like I said... I did not lose a leg in Vietnam."
I used to have both legs. I still do, but I used to, too.
That’s called a paraprosdokian, a Hedberg specialty joke.

DAM! I wish he was still alive today 2020 "RIP" Mitch
1995, we meet again. "In Living Color" was still on the air, and Sony Walkmans were the shit.
Distant memories of being 15, damn it flew by. Recall Coolio's Gangsters Paradise was being hammered on the radio, and by extension the film "Dangerous Minds".? And other good'uns of that year - Fled, Judge Dredd, Strange Days, Bad Boys, Hackers, Casino, Desperado, Assassins, Empire Records and so-on. If nothing else can be said for the 90s, at least there were some awesome bands and great movies. Unlike some of the unimaginative music and films of late.

This is the first time I’ve seen this particular show. There was even some different material in it that I haven’t heard until now. To think this whole time, there were still a few Mitch Hedberg jokes left to be discovered. And like the rest, they didn’t disappoint. 😃
The World According to Mitch.
Definitely a one of a kind.
Thank You.
He was funny even back then. It’s fascinating to see how he crafted his onstage persona into the one liner powerhouse he became. I sadly only discovered Mitch long after he passed (thanks to a Spotify comedy playlist of all things). RIP Mr. Hedburg!
I like how this feels like I'm watching an old VHS tape.
I can’t buy a donut without thinking of Mitch. I don’t need a receipt!
It’s amazing to see him back before drugs. He was so calm and put together. I think this show was one of his funniest. I loved his one liners as much as anyone but they didn’t compare to his real stand up.
It’s fascinating to see how some of his jokes evolved... love Mitch I wish we could have heard his take on the world today....
Fascinating to see him prior to perfecting his onstage persona. He is arguably one of the most brilliant comics EVER.
I don't think I've ever heard him sound so eloquent. A real chatterbox.

Me, my brother, and a couple of friends first saw Mitch on some special that was aired on Television. He was completely bombing. He had a drink in one hand and his jokes on a piece of paper in the other. We watched him perform and were in stitches. We didn't know why the audience weren't laughing. He eventually made a joke or comment about the fact that he was bombing and people began to chuckle. He turned it around after that. We were all fans after that. I always found him endearing. One of my best friends looks and talks a lot like Mitch. He even has very similar mannerisms. Its strange and uncanny these similarities. Anyway, God rest him.
