Still my favorite cover song ever. Paul Simon had called David Draman and told him this was his song now. Basically David and Disturbed captured the tone and power of the lyrics better than anyone.

How is it that I read this rumor about every good cover? Prince supposedly said that to Sinéad O'Connor, Trent Reznor said that about Johnny Cash, Paul Simon said that about David... Until I see that said by the actual person, I am not willing to believe that line.

Lol, yall don't have to agree or think it's a lie, Paul actually wrote a post about it, and the subsequent email regarding the live performance is verified.
You can look it up yourself with a Google search rather than be a couple of catty b1txhes, and while both versions are great, the disturbed rendition does capture the mood of the song better. All my opinion though

Enjoyed your reactions, so I subscribed. I’m a 74 year old grandma who discovered this cover and the band in 2020! I’m now a huge fan of the band. David Draiman’s voice is one of a kind, even his heavy metal voice! In his youth he was trained Jewish Cantor, as his father and grandfather before him. His brother is an opera singer. Follow music from the 60s through the 2000s. Looked through your list of past reactions of the music I love. I actually still have my vinyl of Simon and Garfunkel’s 1st album with this on it, 1964.

Tomorrow 8/9 Wednesday marks 2 years since my moms passing just a few weeks short of her 70th birthday. She loved Simon and Garfunkel and so do I as she introduced me to the music of her generation at a young age. I was blessed to have been able to take her to see Simon and Garfunkel live in concert back in the early 2000’s. She loved all music and very much loved this particular cover. Honestly my mom was more up to date with music than myself. So nice to see people from all ages react and really appreciate all kinds of music. God bless 🙏🏻

Me personally , I'm 62 years old so I remember when Simon & Garfunkel came out with this song, and it was definitely a statement song a protest song if you will for it's time , that was beautifully written for the time that it was written in because it's basically 50 years later that Disturbed bring the song back to the 4front of today's modern living and does it in such a way that he honored the song on the first couple of verses (I feel like)but after that each verse got more and more intense vocally and by the last verse the vocal was so intense it was so it was almost like he was saying wake the hell up people it's still going on today , so that's just my thought from me living through both times of this song
The words fit in both eras
One more thing Simon and Garfunkel gave high praises to Disturbed version and interpretation of their song so that's it
    PEACE OUT ✌🏾
    Great reaction Shon 👍🏼💯

The first was a warning. This was like an angel coming down in wrath to reiterate a warning that went unheard.
The word of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls. He's talking about graffiti. The youth are the prophets. They are the ones who will determine the future. And we're relegating them to express themselves with paint cans because we don't give them any other voice. Like you said, it's a deep song.

As far as the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement Halls, you have to remember this is written in the mid-1960s but I've always taken it to mean that it's a scathing indictment of people who will recite the Bible and the words of the prophets from the Old Testament, yet all you have to do is look around you on the subway walls and in the tenement halls to see how people are really treating each other in real life. It's a real eye-opener. I love this version of it; it's incredible.

Tenements are essentially public housing, section 8 apartments, etc.
This is my fav line, and this is what I think it means:
The graffiti from people living the struggle, people living on the streets, those messages are the wisdom we should be looking for. We pretend like the average person can't be the wise one who sees what's coming, but they are more likely to be dropping bars cuz they livin' life. We should be listening to each other, connecting with each other instead of waiting for the next Talking Head or Cult of Personality to tell us what to think and do.

You are correct. Simon actually wrote this song, which with all his songs he wrote in his bathroom with no lights and the water running. However; he and Garfunkel disagreed on its meaning. Garfunkel said that the song was a time in future when we would no longer communicate the same. Talking without speaking (texting), people hearing without listening (face in phone basically in a trance not really hearing what others were saying), and the neon lights the information highway that we are addicted to, is our neon g-d we made. Very deep song

  • @Wahots79
    @Wahots79 Před 9 měsíci

I grew up on this song, (as sung by Simon & Garfunkel). I loved the words, but their voices were so...passive that I felt as if they'd somehow done their own song a disservice. This was a powerful song that no one really "heard" (sure they heard the words, but never really put the mesg together).
This song is all about communication. The neon light is the bloob tube (TV). It's technology. (also later mentioned: they bowed and prayed to the neon god they made...again, technology). Even back in the 70's, they saw how it was already starting to interfere in true communication. But also the loss of people's ability to have deep and meaningful conversations. Talking without speaking (empty words), people hearing without listening.... How many times have you had someone repeat themseves because you weren't actually listening to them? People having thoughts and feelings they need to express but don't. (writing music their voices never share).
"My words like silent raindrops fell, and echoed in the wells of silence." S&G were trying to give a warning to a generation that was already ignoring their words.
This song was MADE for David. This is his song. He gave it the passion and anger that it needed all along.

Don't worry about what it means to us, or even the writer, or the singer. It means to you what it means to you, and that will change the older you get. Enjoy.

Since you asked about the neon lights, when this song was written if you walked a city street and night you were under a canopy neon lit signs for various restaurants, hotels etc. they often flickered and buzzed on and off. The lines “I turned my collar to cold and damp, when my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light” is an incredible illusion of a lonely person walking the city street at night in the silence of the
City noise. Later he referenced these as “the neon gods they made”.
And “the sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway wall - and tenement halls” is simple and deep. Literally it means that the messages everyday people scribble on the walls with graffiti or just vandalism are messages from a higher source, and to me means you would find that the everyday common person has insightful beautiful things to say- if we would take the time to listen.

Shout out to you as you are the person I have seen pick up on the fact that he said, "And the words ON the prophets are written on the subway wall..." It should be, "the words OF the prophets are written on the subway wall." You were inadvertently spot on; it doesn't make sense. I have just discovered you today and subscribed. Love and Godspeed from England.

Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like an emotional rollercoaster ride, slowly bringing us to the top, then quickly crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction!!! Please consider to also reacting to the a Capella group called Pentatonix's version, which is somewhere in the middle 😊 (love all 3 versions)

Boomer here. I listened to the original Simon & Garfunkle version back in the 1960s. I love the original’s music - you must listen to it. But, Disturbed’s version is better than the original, imo. He nailed it.
Back in the 1960’s, neon signs were the advertising for so many things. The signs were not easy to make and used different gases to make different colors. They were basically glass tubes bent into shapes and writing, filled with a gas (neon is obviously one) and had electrodes added to cause the gas to fluoresce. (Light up)
The meaning of neon signs in this song is about materialism. People are valuing possessions over their fellow humans.
He wants to wake them up! Show them that life is about far more.
You absolutely need to check out Simon and Garfunkel. They had great songs. I suspect you will really enjoy their “Cecelia.” They were just messing around with percussion and it became the background for Cecelia. I love everything S&G did.

Garfunkel, introducing the song at a live performance (with Simon) in Harlem, June 1966, summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly intentionally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."
