This is somehow a masterpiece. It's an important song already but Disturbed strips out the harmony, slows down the tempo, and replaces the folk with metal and orchestra, the vocal fry, the entire progression toward crescendo, none of it seems like it should work but dang does it ever. Disturbed makes it their own while respecting the song. Draiman's voice is just incredible.

David Draiman's voice has always held that power/force. I think as pop and rap have dominated main stream music, Metal has been pushed back out of the spotlight and Voices like Draiman's have been forgotten. This song showcases his vocal power, range and delivery.

Same here. I never cared for S&G's folk style, so I also never listened to the words. Kudos to S&G for the lyrics, prophetic and written nearly 60 years ago. But for me, I never would have LISTENED to it without this version. And now I'm also a little obsessed with David Draiman. Lol. His voice is incomparable. Trained as a cantor in the Jewish church, there's nothing he can't sing, he just chose the rock/metal path. Depending on what you want to listen to, some of their more recent stuff has a little more of this flavor, Hold Onto Memories, If Ever I Lose My Faith In You, A Reason To Fight ... those are all a little more mainstream, but with their own twist. Their earlier stuff that didn't draw you in might now ... Down With The Sickness, Stricken ... I mean, it depends on what you're looking for. They've been going strong for 20+ years and their music has evolved along with their lives. What hasn't changed is the incredible underlying talent and the sheer musicianship of this band and lead singer. ❤

Paul Simon is a genius!!! This was written over 50 years ago, and when presented to us back then, it was as a folk song the way Simon and Garfunkle sang it. We did not have any real conception of what the soft , pretty sounding words softly sung with an acoustic guitar meant! It took 50 years, and another musical genius, David Draimen, to bring the words to life. Paul Simon is still a genius for even putting the words on paper.

When Simon and Garfunkel sang this back in the 60s it was such a lighthearted warning that like you I never paid attention to the lyrics. It was like oh hey guys our tvs and radios are kinda stopping us from communicating with our family, friends, neighbors. Now here we are all these years later with soooo much technology at our fingertips 24 hours a day that you cant talk at all to people without our eyes being diverted to their cell phones, game systems ect. So David sings this in all out rage because no one listened to the warning so here we are. Not only are we divided by all this technology but we are also so divided by our politics, religion, race and on and on. I love the ending where the folks with the instruments are separate from the folks with music, words, voices. Only when we as a society can cross that divide and come together as one people and find a way to communicate with one another again, will this end this terrible state that we all find ourselves in.

Love this song. The S&G version of the song has such a soft, lilting tone to it that it detracts from the weight of the lyrics for me. The arrangement by Disturbed elevates the original work while still deeply respecting it, with not only the vocals, but the instruments slowly building and growing in power until the final verse is almost overwhelming in the power, reaching a crescendo just in time to leave you feeling both relieved and sad that it has finished.

  • @rollotomassi6232
    @rollotomassi6232 Před 2 lety +10

Paul Simon took six months to write the lyrics, which are about man's lack of communication with his fellow man. The author sees the extent of communication as it is, on only its most superficial and "commercial" level (of which the "neon sign" is representative). There is no serious understanding because there is no serious communication - "people talking without speaking - hearing without listening". No one dares take the risk of reaching out ("take my arms that I might reach you") to disturb the sound of silence. The poet's (character in the song) attempts are equally futile (" . . . but my words like silent raindrops fell within the wells of silence"). The warning comes as how people worship technology as a religion “people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made” (In the 60’s that was TV, today how many people do you see bow to their cell phones?) The ending is an enigma. The words tell us that when meaningful communication fails, the only sound is silence, that graffiti on the subway walls and tenement halls holds truer meaning than the psychobabble on TV or the people yelling at each other in the streets. This song, written 50+ years ago, is more poignant than ever in today’s world.

Pardon my French, but damn it, sir! Why'd you have to react to this song??
This brings me to tears every. single. time! It didn't fail to do it when I watched this. How this song stirs something in my soul, you feel the despair and anguish in his voice. This is a _magnificent_ cover.
One should never underestimate rock/metal singers. A lot are classical trained and sounds a hell of a lot better than some mainstream artists. Marko Hietala (formerly) of NightWish comes to mind. In fact, I suggest you check out their mellow ballads like "While Your Lips Are Still Red" and "The Islander".
And if you want a good sample of his vocal power (and their old lead vocalist, Tarja Turunen), watch their End of an Era concert where they covered "Phantom of the Opera", because that version was, imho, what the original musical would have wished it was.

None of their other songs are really in this style though

I've watched dozens of reactions to this extraordinary cover. There are frequently idiots who complain about interruptions. If they want the song without, it's available elsewhere. This is a reaction and when you feel like you have to react, you react. You can always argue about precisely where it is appropriate, but it's a bloody REACTION. Great effort my man.

The original is a warning and people were hearing without listening ..... Now they pray to Neon Gods they made. Time to raise our voices and remove the nice to maybe get the point across.

while i like this i think the live version on Conan is better.

Then you need your hearing checked, either that or your just one of those people who's unreasonably biased towards live versions. During the performance on Conan, David was suffering from a bad cold, so his raw vocal power and range were not nearly at the level we got with the music video. What's worse is because of that the show's producers, without even telling the band, put autotune on David's mic, further diluting his incredible natural voice. This also deeply upset David as he is passionately opposed to the use of autotune in their music.

@@KorAsek453 don't care he got auto tuned once. Don't care he was upset.
I prefer the live version. Which is very rare for me.
His vocal fry live adds something and the instrumental is better.

Oh it does get better than this. Listen to the live version from Conan from 2016. He can do it live...and better.

The live performance on Conan is even better than this one. He was sick and his vocals were absolutely amazing.
