  • In response to a recent comment on one of my videos where a viewer accused me of "cheating", I decided to do a video discussing that, as well as my thoughts on what constitutes cheating when it comes to music production and performance. We'll discuss, overdubbing/punch-ins, time alignment and pitch correction, as well as technology like amp sims and virtual instruments and if using backing tracks live is ok...or is it cheating?
    #backingtracks #pitchcorrection #ampsim
    00:00 - Intro
    00:51 - The "Cheater" comments
    04:24 - The "Purist" viewpoint
    05:44 - What is NOT cheating? 1. (Overdubs/Punching In)
07:11 - What is NOT cheating? 2. (Editing)
10:35 - What is NOT cheating? 3. (Technology)
    13:12 - What IS cheating?
15:38 - My take on backing tracks
    18:49 - Outro

I love how people who comment like this and send shade never have the courage to have their own content. I only once got called out by someone who puts himself out there (When John Sykes chewed me out - gotta respect THAT guy!). This guy needs to do a song of his own and post the video before he opens his virtual mouth.

I think some people just don't know how music gets made and recorded. Nobody plays live and in one-take in the studio. It's all chopped up and recorded bit by bit to get the best sound and recording possible, that's why it's done that way. Even back in the days of analog tape they were physically cutting and splicing in takes, it was just something you tried not to do because it took so much more time but now with modern tech, it's much easier to do so naturally people take advantage of the new tools we have at our disposal. Even if you do play live and in one-take, you still have to double-track that take so you're technically always dubbing in multiple tracks anyway if you want a decent, stereo guitar tone. How are you supposed to cover a song with 5 studio guitars going in a single take? It can't be done. If you want it to sound like the original recording, you have to dub in all those extra guitars.
All my covers were live for many, many years and it's a struggle to get good sound when you just have one single mono guitar track. I'd stick a mic in front of my amp and play the song live all the way through, single take and no edits. Before that I was just using a cheap webcam mic and sticking that in front of me. Never liked the quality I was getting doing it that way. Meanwhile, I was watching all these other cover channels and they're clearly pre-recording everything and of course their videos sounded so much better than mine so I made the switch. So much happier with the sound quality now in my videos compared to the past.
I still make sure the video recording is live and one-take. I do think it is important to maintain that integrity and that you can play the song live without relying too much on edits to clean it up. I still get comments occasionally from people saying I'm faking or whatever, I don't take it too seriously anymore. Some people even claim playing to a click is 'cheating' because that's technically using a backing track. Peoples' critiques just get ridiculous sometimes. It's not a coincidence that the harshest critics of your playing never have any videos or evidence of their own playing.

Yup 100%. And the negative comments usually come from people that have no content of their own.

He's cheating by using a digital device to type his comments to you. If he doesn't hand write them, then they aren't real thoughts.
