You need to check out River Roots. It’s a NDP in Cleveland that is a partnership that includes Michael Symon the Chef. They pick barrels then they blend them and bottle what he and his partners like. Now I picked up a bottle haven’t opened it yet but I’m hoping to this coming week. One would think that he should have a incredible palate. Seelbach sold his first pick it was a hazmat that was 275. The bottle I got was 80. And a cask strength. His bottle on seelbach sold out within hours of release. I’ll let you know how my bottle is.

I highly recommend McBrayer Legacy Spirits. The WH McBrayer, Old McBrayer and Cedar Brook are excellent bourbons. In my humble opinion, it is the absolutely best story in bourbon. Bill McBrayer revived a legendary Kentucky brand that goes back to “The Judge” in the 19th century. Bill and his family have done a fantastic job!

@brewzle Another Missouri distillery you need to check out is Nobelton's Distilling House. They produce Planters and Copper Dome whiskey. Single barrels of those brands rival some of the best whiskey I tasted last year. I actually prefer them over Holladay by a big margin. They have some VERY old barrels (16+ years) and their single barrels are usually $70-80... You should jump on a pick there ASAP if you want access to their old stock

They’re a distillery in Charleston SC owned by sazerac, who derive their mash from Buffalo trace since they’re unable to make their own at the moment. The normal product is okay but the higher proof really brings more flavor. Hope you can find it!

@@MrWolfriver I’m headed to the cask strength next! Excellent comment! Ps. That Pipe Dream is so solid. Almost hard to believe for 29$ at my local spot. Like really?!?! 29$?!? I’m in.

Rickhouse proof Ben Holladay might be getting more distribution. I’m in SW MO and for the last couple months it’s been on shelves and not in the allocated or limited release sections. I know I’m in the same state as the distillery, but might keep an eye out for it

Earling, Iowa! Steeple Ridge Bourbon!! Cask Strength cask Strength! Farm to bottle with Old World Crops! Wapsie Valley Corn which hasn't been cultivated en mass for over 100 years. Purchased seed from an Amish family who was still cultivating it. They use Old world red winter wheat as well. The bottle I got was a store Pick for Hy-Vee Wine and Liquor in Harlan, Iowa.

I find it strange when people talk about craft whiskey, content producers often will talk about them in context with major distillers. They’ll say they’re not there yet or their too grain forward, or pick apart a craft whiskey to days on end. I honestly don’t think most craft distillers are trying to mimic Kentucky distillers. I’ve come to appreciate what other whiskey regions produce and what their climates bring to the table. I appreciate a TX Barrel Proof on my shelf as much as I love my Hardins Creek, as much as I love Bunnahabhain 12 scotch. They all bring something to the table that I enjoy!

I love the American single malt scene gaining traction. I love that they don’t have to follow the rules of traditional bourbon and do things their way. Using ex bourbon barrels, finishing whiskeys in different barrels. I think we need a section of American whiskey made for the Scotch and Irish whiskey drinker like me.

Somedays, you just want the different or interesting pour. For me, that may be craft or scotch or finished or American whiskey.
There are 2 notes I try to avoid in any whiskey, the young, overly bright tannin note, and a sour note that hits badly.

Noble Oak out of Ohio as well is doing good things in my opinion. I was going for a Middle West a few days ago and found one of their sherry finished bourbon's and went for it instead. It's really good. Definitely reminds me of some of the sherry aged scotches I also love but definitely more balanced.

When you hit New York as of now the best local 'Bourbon' is New Scotland Helderberg. My preference is the winter wheat but all of them I've had were good.
