      Morgan, I think you take this conversation in the right spirit, but this chainsaw/spin serve that has been introduced is going to quickly do harm to pickleball and turn spectators away. It clearly creates an enormous advantage for the server in a sport that was designed for the advantage to belong to the returner. Why else can't the server charge the net or volley the return? That's meant to make it harder to gain a service point. Every sport has regulations to keep a competitive balance and fair play, whether it's how many players must be on the line of scrimmage in football, traveling in basketball, the balk rule in baseball ... or the no-volley zone in pickleball. You, Zane and others have found a loophole that the founders of the sport didn't consider. If they had, no doubt they would have written it into the rules to keep their intentions of how the game should be played intact. No, everyone's not going to figure it out. A serve that ricochets severely right or severely left when it bounces can't be figured out. Either outlaw the spin serve or take all regulations off the serve entirely and allow players to serve any way they wish, including overhand and above the waist.

    The crazy thing that messes people up the most is that it only LOOKs like hes putting a ton of on the ball with his paddle with his open stance and the way he comes around the ball with his paddle. The most deadly serve he does (most of the aces) he is spinning the ball to his Left (opponents right) with his fingers. He has to stand way open (facing the stands) to be able to spin the ball like this. Then he comes around the ball to make it look like hes going to put a ton of slice on the ball to his RIGHT (opponents left) but he ACTUALLY makes contact straight on with the ball, but still has a follow through that wraps under and around the ball. So his apponent sees his open stance and wrapping follow through and their brain cant help but think "Balls slicing and going to come to my left" but then, because of the spin from his fingers, it bounces and kicks to their right! And they fumble because they are setup for a backhand, or are moving to try and get around the ball and it ends up going the other way.
    The biggest reason it is so deadly is because he is able to mix it up with an actual slice going the other way, and a similar shot that looks the same but has some top spin so it bounces low. Thats what go Chou so beat up is that he was trying to quick-hop the ball, but Evan's kept mixing it up on him. I think the spin serves are an awesome adition to the game. Evans was the original, but now so many people are putting their own "spin" on it. Even Lea Jensen (who gets beat up by Evans pretty bad) is startging to put a little something on the ball, and I'm sure given a little time will have a killer serve.

    • @hunterbaker8526
      @hunterbaker8526 Před 3 lety +1

      Its not from his fingers. Its the physics of spin. I don’t play pickleball but you can tell why the ball kicks the way it does. Sidespin affects the ball differently off of the bounce depending on whether the ball has backspin or topspin on the ball. If it has sidespin and backspin it will stay low and kick in the direction it was already traveling off the bounce. But if you put topspin on it with backspin it does the opposite, kicking forward and biting back the other direction off the bounce. You can tell this is what’s happening based on his follow through which wraps around and over the ball creating the illusion of backspin when in actuality, following over the ball produces the topspin that kicks the ball back in the opposite direction off the bounce in conjunction with the side spin.

    • @joemarshall4226
      @joemarshall4226 Před 3 lety +1

      I'm thinking that the best chance in returning these serves would be to keep one's feet moving forward quickly, and take the serve as close as possible to the bounce.....in other words, short hop the ball....and I mean really close, like 3-6 inches after the bounce. Open the paddle and aim high and deep. Deaden the hand if the serve comes in too fast. In this way, the served ball wouldn't have enough time to bounce far enough to the side to avoid the paddle. The returner's quick-moving feet would supply the momentum for the return, and the open face of the paddle would help lift the ball.

      @@1337sim1 Good comparison.....but much closer....I have a couple of friends who are great loopers in ping pong, and I am able to beat them even when better players than me cannot. The key is to block the ball close to the bounce, with a racquet that counteracts the top and side spin combination that a looper usually uses. The dead hand allows you to control the depth of your return, and helps angle the ball sharply. I play all three sports regularly over the last few years....usually once a week or more each.

    To be honest, we shouldn't ban it. It adds dynamic to the game. If you look at his serve for a couple of time, you will be able to figure out to counter it. He's pre-spinning the ball with his toss hand in a rotational direction that causes the ball to kick in a direction that is different than what the swing would indicate. Finger spinning was banned in table tennis in the late 1930's for this very reason. It's no shocker that a table tennis player would notice that pre-spinning of the ball was not illegal in PB and decide to master it. With that being said, it will be banned in PB from 2023 on.

    Of course it was not fun to play against these serves, but to say the Morgan Evan's serve was not a piece of strategical beauty while it was legal would be completely false. Returners needed to work harder and actually be engaged to put in a serious effort to return the serve and proceed to the kitchen. He meticulously developed this serve (rotation, direction, toss, contact point) and used it to perfection for this brief period of time. Was it frustrating for the other players...oh yeah...could they have learned to return it...oh definitely. That was the nature of sport. It would have been interesting to see where pickleball went either way. I respect both opinions on the subject, this video is just great.

    You can't put pre-serve spin on the ball in tennis, you can't put pre-spin serve on the ball in table tennis.........but for some reason people are up in arms about applying the same type of rule in pickleball. It's obviously needed. You 44 feet away from the server and it's extremely difficult to read what the server is doing to the ball prior to connecting with the paddle (which adds additional spin). It's clear there is some randomness to how the ball reacts off the court. Props to Evans for the innovation here, but it's not good for the sport.

      It's a combination of 2 things: 1. He's spinning the ball (with his fingers) on his toss, so his paddle is exacerbating the spin, and 2. There's very little baseline room to allow the returner to stand further back to adjust to the spin after it bounces. Thus, he just needs to serve it deep and the returner has extremely little time to adjust to the spin. If the baseline area were larger, they could stand further back to give themselves time, like in tennis where returners have a ton of room to address to slice or twist serves.

    Great, so now pickleball will become unwatchable. Would anyone pay to watch Morgan Evans serve out 11 straight points? That's not sport; that's a trick shot. It's not how the serve was intended to be hit. There's a reason there's three seconds and goaltending in basketball. Because without those rules, tall guys would stand under the basket and dunk on one end while swatting away shots on the other. No one would watch that -- and no one will watch this if the serve isn't outlawed.
