    Johansson in AO 2005 hit 51 aces against Agassi, one of the best returners in tennis history.

      Compared to Novak, Agassi's return skills are ordinary at best. Novak is hands down the greatest returner in history.

      Why do you want to compare right away? In terms of numbers and stats, Novak has a better return. However, Agassi is also a great player with the highest return of all time. Look at the match against Sampras. Is it normal to return a pistol serve with a pistol?

    • @othgmark1
      @othgmark1 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Agassi was so good on the returns because he would commit completely to one side or the other. He made a decision to hit a return or get aced. Against Johannson he was constantly caught leaning the wrong way. Why did he keep doing it? He was playing to get 1 break a set. He won the match by the way even if he got aced more times than anyone in history.

      New balls dry air and perfectly in the sweet spot. The fact that Groth may have been the most muscular guy of all the players shown leads me to believe he may have been capable of exceeding 160. I watched him at a Challenger in heavy windy condition and he was consistent at 135 when no other pros were coming close to 130. There were players in the draw that have reached top 20. Some with big serves.

      Kyrgios is perhaps the best server of all time, up there with isner, Roddick and Sampras. Not for his speed tho (which is still extremely fast). It's because he can serve with pinpoint accuracy, and because his serve has no giveaways, you don't know where he's serving until he's hit the ball

    Butch Walts back in the 1970s. I believe experts said 149. He used a standard size racket (Head Competition). Walts was really built. Much stronger than Isner. I suspect he could wack the ball harder than Isner, but the angle and bounce were not as extreme. Walt’s was not as tall as Isner.

    Pound for pound (or more specifically, inch for inch), the best servers are easily Roddick, Sampras, and Federer. Yes, some of the taller players can serve faster or hit more aces, but for their height, those 3 are the best of the best.

    Good serving is all about changing speeds and spins, hitting your spots, and enough pace to make it all effective. Federer rarely went past 125mph, but he got a lot of free points off his very effective serve. He kept the returner off balance. And don't forget the 2nd serve which is just as important. Many top players just spin it in.

    • @michaelsheedy

      Isner's 2nd serve in some ways was more effective than his 1st. Biggest kick I have ever seen as at top height it was over your head.

    I hate Rusedski, but his serve might actually be the fastest on this list. In the 90s they measured the speed as the ball approached the net rather than the immediate speed you get as the ball leaves the racket. That means if the serve was measured today, the radar would measure it at about 10 MPH faster than back then.

      Roscoe may have been capable of 150 with a modern racquet but he never played with one in his prime. He crushed the ball in his era but nothing like Roddick. I actually attended a serving clinic he hosted in the early 1980's. He had just switched to the midsize La Coq Sportif from his aluminum PDP. He was serving low 130's indoors.
