- Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow video game review of Children of Mana for the Nintendo DS, from Square-Enix. Released in 2006, this was the first game in the Mana series for the Nintendo DS, and the first game in the World of Mana project. You can choose one of four characters to dungeon crawl your way through this action-rpg reminiscent of the prior Secret of Mana, hacking and slashing monsters with a variety of weaponry and magical attacks. The gameplay is a bit repetitive and linear at times, but it can still get addictive, and the presentation is very well executed with gorgeous graphics and charming character design. I have this game & it's pretty fun.
Yes it get's repetive in time, but I usually play my DS games in short burst, so I don't get bored with them.
this game has a great multiply player aspect and can play the whole story mode with someone else!

I really need to start back up my copy of Children to see if I can have fun with it again, I wasn't too impressed with it at first and never got around to playing it any more. I'll give it a second look :).

Funny thing is that Seiken Densetsu was originally planned to be a 3D dungeon crawler for the Famicom, and in fact was to precede Dragon Quest as the first commercial RPG in Japan. I suppose that this game possibly tries to implement that idea, but obviously is more inspired by games like Diablo.
I do remember following the "World of Mana" project back then and just simply wondering what the hell they were going to do with the series. Unfortunately it was ultimately disappointing (Dawn of Mana being VERY disappointing), but I can at least try out this and Heroes of Mana to see if they are worth something. The only thing we got to look forward to in the Mana series now is yet another Seiken Densetsu/Final Fantasy Adventure remake that may/may not be coming stateside.
What do you mean? Dawn of Mana is 3D and out of all Mana games I enjoyed that most. But I really hope to get a remake soon!

I've been trying to figure this out myself. Games can be repetitive in some ways but still fun like Golden Axe as you mentioned while this game bored me to tears. But in all fairness, Golden Axe is a completely different game and genre. Long story short, some genres can get away with repetitiveness if they make up for it in other areas, which Golden Axe does. COM is boring because it's an action RPG but doesn't exploit the strengths an action RPG has. That's the best answer I can give you.
Looks very interesting me myself my favorite mana game is SECRET OF MANA 2 bc of the way they made the magical attacks however you can't add elements to your weapons through magic like you can in SECRET OF MANA 1 but it's has a harder difficulty level than SECRET OF MANA 2 does so my question is should i buy and waste my time on this game?

Agreed on the dungeon design. It would have been better if rooms could be side by side like a normal map instead just one after another.

I feel the same way. It reminds me a bit of Minish Cap in its art design and feel, but but there's nothing else to the game except attacking enemies with a combo attack. Over and over again. -_-

When I got this game, I wrote it off as a disappointing purchase because I was expecting something more like Sword of Mana, my gateway entry to the series that I loved as a kid. Now I might go and check it out again.
GreenTengu97 You totally should! I bought this game for just $200 MXN ($15 US) and trust me, its amazing. I was expecting something like Sword of Mana too, which I played when I was like 11 y-o, but it wont let you fall :3

I didn't say you said it was better than other Mana games. I don't mind some dungeon crawlers, Diablo 1 comes to mind and I played the hell out of it. I can't quite put my finger on why COM is boring to me (and others). Maybe it's the art style combined with the repetitive dungeon crawling. Don't know.
As much as i want this game, im gonna play the first games of the 'whole' series.

I understand. However they are competing companies, Namco and Square. But the concept of Mana is old in the east and within games it is used frequently, if not for else, as to describe MP.

There's no such thing as a "real" gamer. That's a subjective qualifier. To each their own, people prefer different things, there is no right or wrong style.

No you didn't start this, you butted in to a conversation I was having with someone else, and no you won't get the final word. I didn't say art style or dungeon crawling make a game. I was speculating on why I found the game boring. There are many factors that can contribute to why a game is enjoyable or not to an individual, and these are subjective tastes. If you like the art style and dungeon crawling, more power to you, I didn't.
Its not like rune factory being a better clone of harvest moon.
Is there something wrong with complaining? Like you said, Sword of Mana and Seiken are superior games. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to like this game. The graphics are colorful and the combat is more robust than say, Zelda ALTTP. The main problem is that it's just a dungeon crawler. Because of that, it gets really repetitive and boring.
I own a copy of secret of mana. It's my least favorite snes game out of legend of zelda killer instinct and legend.
@Big White Duck Gave it away to someone who is taking much better care of it then i did. Looking back, I'm still not a huge fan of it. But I'll give it a pass for it's historical significance.

Well all that means is that most gamers didn't like it. You yourself admitted to playing most of the previous games, so you know how much better they are. Care to briefly explain what you liked about this game, taking into consideration Sword of Mana, and Seiken being superior games?

I hated this game :/ it was very repetitive and you had no party members. I also didn’t like the gems/stones systems. After playing sword of mana i just couldn’t get into it.
If there wasn't a point, then why are you doing it yourself? And quite obviously no, most gamers didn't even like this game so they probably would disagree with you.
The Mana series really fell off a cliff after the first 3 entries into it, I really wish Square managed the series better. The same goes for the Chrono series.
Not really, none of the subsequent games are that bad. At least they all stay true to the spirit of the first few games. Some are even better than those, like Legend of Mana and arguably Sword of Mana. And Chrono Trigger was never really meant to be a series.

No one can sell me into this game. I bought it expecting something at least as good as secret or something.
But no. It's an uninspired dungeon crawler, with a terrible knock back mechanic that ruins the game play.
