- With Trials of Mana hopefully reviving the dormant Mana series I decided to take a look back at one of the more obscure entries from the dark age.

#ChildrenOfMana #Mana #Review - Hry
I wish children of mana and adventures of mana were remastered
Damn I miss this game. May have a lot of flaws but it stuck with me over the years and this is unfortunately the only Mana game I've ever played. Great review!
Dude, you need to play the Trials of Mana remake.
Maverick D. Is Trials worth it? Cause it doesn’t LOOK nearly as good as Children of Mana 😭
Same my guy.
I mean not in the sense of it being my only Mana game but in the sense that I love it and would replay it in a heartbeat, even solo.
This is a good game for anyone who likes grindy dungeon-crawlers. The combat is great, so I don't mind repeating it millions of times. This is a niche genre and is made for fans of that.
"..so that's a cool tie-in"
LMAO
Great review! I'm planning to play the entire Mana series and couldn't find a good video about Children of Mana. Thank you for this and keep up the good work
I'm so glad you made this video! This was actually my first DS game (my mom picked it out lmao) and this was a great way to revisit the game without grinding through all the dungeons. I would also love to see uncompressed versions of the cutscenes. I had no idea Production I.G. worked on this game either, so as a big FLCL lover that was really cool to know.
This video is amazingly high effort and I'm still surprised you still only have 740 subscribers
Great video! I can really tell how much effort went into it :3
Btw, I loved the game :D
Went looking for a video on this old gem (lol) and glad to find Tectonic on the job.
Neat video!
I remember I played as the magic kid when I tried this game but was ultimately underwhelmed since from what I remember, magic was something you didn't get to do very often, and you could only do one spell at a time. It made me feel like I played some kind of hard mode by the end since most of his other stats were bad.
Also I'm surprised you didn't talk about how one of the bosses is a black hole. That one really caught me off guard.
I think this review is precisely what I was looking for. Binging on some Secret of Mana lately had me trying to remember this cutesy stylized Mana style game... that I remember ending up being a very mediocre and easily completed. I've been looking for like two hours now looking over all Mana games trying to figure out what it was I rented or played.
Until this video I couldn't tell that Children of Mana is very much looking like what I played because all other videos/images didn't include anything I remember. The village, the main hero with the big hair, the GEM FRAME... that stuff rings a bell. I swear that save screen mouse is there in my brain.
I feel like this still might not be what I played, because my in my memory the game is much more simplified. However, I distinctly remember being confused about the similar but different Mana spirits. That's really the biggest clue in my brain.
I remember the opening sequence 15 years ago and the beauty of the artstyle made me so SO disappointed when the gameplay ended up being endless grinding. Now with this review I can finally put the mystery of the ending to rest. Thank you!
Thank you for making the basically the sole definitive review of this game on youtube. I always appreciate lengthy, high quality reviews of old games that just don't have sufficient coverage. And I know that feeling of wanting to like a game a lot more than you do, with it having so many good qualities, but still just too many mediocre ones to overlook.
Loved this game as a kid. Wasnt' great but I love the artstyle.
Not trying to defend the game, but the combat is juuuuust a liiiiiiittle bit more complex than "3-hit combo > repeat".
It kinda sounds like an exploit tbh, but the Sword is capable of infinite combos by doing "2-hit, pause, 2-hit, pause" loop, knowing this, you can actually choose when to stagger enemies to death, or send then flying with the combo finisher for crowd control.
The Flail attack can be mixed into the 2nd hit and 3rd hit of the sword, so you can really use it as an "get off me" move, or extend the Sword combo depending on your position. You can do the same with the Hammer swing.
The Hammer charge attack can be instantly charged if you do the sword combo and hold the Hammer button. This will make your character do the Hammer charge attack as an early/second finisher.
The Bow is the Bow, idk how they wanted you to use it, but maybe the Hammer Charge trick works the same with the Bow? Meaning that you could stun enemies whenever you wanted. 🤔
And also, equipping certain gems can grant you extra abilities for each weapon. Sword gets a Sonic Wave, or double hits, the Flail gets to spin 3 times, etc etc. But makes me wonder why they didn't make so that side quests could give you these extra skills?
Or better yet, make it learnable by leveling up, making the grind at least a little bit more rewarding...
With all that said, it's still pretty damn lacking in terms of combat, but at least by knowing this it becomes... "borderline not as braindead as it seems" lol
i liked the music probably because the composer in the credits did the soundtracks for tactics ogre and ogre battle as well as final fantasy tactics
That's a nice pedigree.
This will be a very expensive game in the future.
It's actually gonna be about 62 years until I get to Dawn of Mana.
Good video though, maybe this game would be better if it followed LoZ's suit and had more puzzles.
I've just started it! ^^
oh, i used a crap ton of cheat codes when I played this and I only ever stumbled onto alternate story paths once. I don't even remember how I winded up in the storage that time, but it only happened once in the 7 or so times i ran through the game, mostly playing as archer girl.
I FINALLY FOUND THIS GAME AHH I USED TO PLAY IT SO MUCH
Yes.
(Credits roll)
I feel like characters should have had bonuses or nerfs depending on their opening.
Like Ferrik would do more sword attacks or have a stronger or quicker parry activating but be less proficent with other weapons
Tamber could do quicker shots, maybe pull off some sick ranged attacks and quicker sword swings with reduced damage. Poppen may have a longer flail range, but can't lift a hammer. _how tf can he even lift it, he's smol._
And the Wanderer would have a hammer combo but uses bows and flail slower.
Obviously it would include replayablity because of how unique everyone would be.
Fuck the intro is so good
your editing has really gotten great i appreciated all of it in this vid
That damn laugh
I love this game, but lost it 8 years ago and i tried finding it at every gaming store i go to, but haven’t gotten lucky :/ i only made it to the 4th boss i think
yes
I would pay money to find a player who uses the bow as their primary weapon in a Mana game.
Yes
I think I got lucky when I played this game. Back in high school I had 3 other friends that had this game and we got to play in classes ( after all the work was done). It was fun but the knocking around part was the worst part.
Playing this with friends definitely seems like it would enhance the experience.
What do you do sweet heart..
I DID AND I SPEND A LOT OF TIME TO FIND ITS NAME. short I played it when I was at my friends house cuz he had console and I didn't. I lost it and I wanted to play again and I never found it.(I don't speak English so sry for my mistakes)
I want this game but im going too see what you say :) about it! I will subscribe im liking your video i want a game i can beat lol
This is the only useful review of this game on CZcams.
Yes, many times, solo.
I'm level 69, and have 29 hours for my main save file. I think desume has netplay? Maybe we could get some epic multiplayer through desume? Reply if you are in, I'll create a discord.
I appreciate it but I'm not up for anything like that.
I have dawn of mana lol really i didnt know it was the worst lol its FUN lol
I just started playing this, it's fine but tad repetitive
I don’t like saying games were my childhood because it’s such a lame meme by this point. But... fuck, this WAS my childhood. First game I ever 100% completed. Has a place in my heart that nothing else can fill.
