It's in France that I got over my insecurities! For years I have been bullied by my family and Indian friends, for having curly hair. So much so, I straightened and seriously damaged my hair from my teenage years. Once I started uni in France, man did I fall in love with my curls, wearing my curly mane with pride!!! I never went back to straightening. Don't even have my hair straightener anymore

For the everyday stuff, ugh... Who has the time to put a primer, foundation, baking, concealer, bla bla bla?

Let me tell you their secret (from the Parisian girls I’ve met). They eat an extremely healthy diet. They take care of their skin. It helps that the sky is always grey in Paris, so they get a free pass if they forgot their sunblock. I think that’s the reason most of them have that smooth porcelain skin. They do blow dry their hair but with the ‘just woke up like this look’ so it looks effortless. They like to starve themselves from time to time. They get weekly massages for cellulite, drainage, lymphatic massages, etc. Their makeup is mostly either Dior or Chanel, no cheap made in China makeup. They have a signature scent and a signature red lipstick. Their clothes although basic are made from quality materials.

I do feel that there is obviously a lot of beautiful unique style traits in the french woman but what american are doing lately is out of control :) I once said that american are obsessed with french in a forum and I was condemned but I only said that because of the quantity of books on how amazing and do-it-all-right french are on Amazon. You would never know who is French and who isn’t unless you hear them speak. Beauty wise, the only difference is perhaps they have a more simple skincare routine and are not as bold with their makeup as you might see here. According to this video, the secret, or a key component among them is simplicity. I've read some comments regarding the beauty of these women, their perfect skin, their glow, their natural beauty, etc., and when comparing eastern vs western diets a lot of what we put in our bodies comes right out through our skin. What we eat in the states (or maybe what's considered the norm) is not nearly as healthy as what they eat out there. Even the school meals are significantly healthier (do your research). I also think the fact that they DO put less is a reason the skin is well maintained. Skin is usually sensitive and make-up products have harsh chemicals. A very small percentage of people actually read the ingredients and look up what they're all about. For the most part, people will go and buy whatever is the hype at the moment circulating CZcams, blogs, magazines. This is not to discount those with genetic material that results in troublesome skin or hormonal issues. Still, I do believe the lifestyle differences among the cultures play a significant role. The glow and texture of my skin is significantly enhanced when I eat clean (lots of greens), lay off meat for little bit at a time, and drink loads of water. It also helps me maintain a healthy weight. So much of this has to do with lifestyle and adjustment... and not to get too deep, but the air as well. The air is polluted as hell. That affects us. So does constant sun exposure without protection. Wear SPF!!! xoxo

Discoloration, acne, face hair, redness, purple under-eye area and all these stuff just don't go away, because it also has to do with genetics. I get it French beauty secret is natural beauty. Mine is not and I'm sorry about this after doing everything I need to do about skin care.

People don't understand the concept of "genetics". People with naturally nicer skin will put their two cents in about skincare but in reality, people with acne know a lot more. "just do this and this and you'll have beautiful skin". Everyone is different and should have their own skincare regime. One thing they forgot to mention is the difference in stress levels and diets around the world. That's their secret.

Yes and also genetics. Science and our biological makeup are stronger than anything we ingest or any medication we can take for our skin. There is only so much we can change. I know people who workout 24/7 and eat all organic and non-dairy diets with cystic acne. Hormones and genetic as well. Please do research before you write "facts".

I can advice you to use a bit of lavender oil with water for your acne, no make up on it or it will not cicatrise efficiently. Always keep it clean and don't touch it or you will infect it, it's strictly discipline, I'm sure you already knew it. For discoloration, if it's red you can play around it : use a bit of concealer on it, maybe a bit of green concealer to get a pinker shade of your skin tone, and a pink blush (or lipstick) on the cheeks, discretely to recreate your blushy tone. For face hair, i know that people care about it and judge women as masculin if they don't remove it so anything you are gonna do with it will be a statement : agree or disagree. If you are ready to remove it, use a cream to hydrate skin, maybe a concealer to break shades. Or keep it. We generally remove lip hair and define eyebrows quickly. For redness, if that means your have red areas on your skin it's because blood vessels have dilated under the pressure so release it, hydrate with your lavender and then, just get able to see it like it will really be : skin is a whole, see it like a clear wall with its nice unique stuff. Purple under eye usually means that you are not having enough sleep. Drink water, sleep a little more, maybe wake up 30 min later with time freed by less makeup routine, concealer and that's it. Nothing will really go away as you will always remember it but it will be your face you will proudly show. And the more you'll see it, the more you will appropriate your image and you won't have to really think about it. You always can find ways that work better for you, oil prodigieuse, a specific cream... But you will ultimately feel like beauty comes from the inside and people are only gonna care about that. You will look effortless but you will be appreciated for your confidence and humility. Makeup is all about the way you look at yourself.

Some of us are not naturally beautiful like that, and we don't stay young and glowy forever. There's nothing wrong with getting a little help from cosmetics. While I enjoy the chic "Parisian girl" look, I also celebrate our ability to embrace whatever self-expression we choose. If Instagram, natural, or no makeup makes someone feel fabulous, so be it. I don't see anyone as being superior because they're low maintenance. I think everyone should have their self-esteem built up enough to know that they don't NEED cosmetics to be beautiful, but if they choose to use them, that's fine.

French women invest time and money on their skin care. They also have something that not all women have, self confidence. In addition, they never try too hard. Perfection in hair and make-up is not their goal, nor do they feel it is sexy to show too much skin. They save that for private moments. They also know how to wear accessories very well.

Parisian born - take care of your base. Your face is a canvas, and should be treated as such. Most french girls won’t wear SPF, but as a derma, this is fundamentally one of the most important things you can do for your skin. I was drilled about skincare from pre-teen. It has stood me in good favour, even more so now I study scalp/skin for a living. 🌹

    • @Hodoss

The classic French look is utilitarian and rather geared towards seducing men, not impressing other women. At the instinctive level the male brain is looking for a healthy reproductive partner, not a christmas tree, as amazing as the christmas tree and its decorations may be.
So from that mindset, looking "amazing" is unnecessary, and can even be counterproductive, giving an artificial or "artwork you can't touch" feeling.
Instead the focus is on being healthy and quality skin care, avoiding excessive makeup as it's bad for the skin. Similar for the hair, gotta look healthy, even a bit messy as is natural, avoiding those beauty practices that damage it.
The point being, looking naturally beautiful, at all times, so they can wake up at their lover's side with no clothes, no makeup, messy morning hair, yet feeling just as beautiful as usual.

The thing is that French Pharma brands have superior products. Like Bioderma has great cleanser and creams and also creams with actives like glycolic acid - they call it brightening cream. Or they have gel-cream with salicylic acid and niacinamide - they call these treatment creams.. I think Avene has a cream with superior but gentler form of Retinol - something brightening cream. It's easy to look radiant and yet have simple, minimalistic, affordable routine when you have such products available easily. Then you don't need foundation or concealer. Just blush and mascara is good enough.
About hair - their shampoos are mild and don't strip oil off the scalp. When you have that plus your hair are not abused by years of heat from harsh dryers, hair will naturally be silky and shiny and beautiful.
    Americans are just unlucky.

There is this weird idea in France that that there is something unseemly about self adornment or glamour, like somehow by "trying" you are admitting that you care about how you look. Weird for a fashion city, right? Well, that can work if you are in fact just naturally stunning. But not so much if you are just plain. When I travel to France, most women I see do literally zero to their hair-no color, no styling, and let me tell you, it doesn't look great. For me, I am impressed most by those that put in the most effort. I am always the one "overdressed" for events, and I wish that were not the case. Everything is just too casual these days. You should not look the same going to the grocery store as you do going to a friend's dinner party or BBQ. Just my opinion.
