Ultimate wood pellet stove

  • Wood pellets are a great source of fuel but they are rubbish in stoves such as the Folding Firebox etc. So I have been tinkering around to try and make them work well using any four sided wood stove and this is what I have come up with. It is a work in progress and will probably come up with some new ideas for a future version.

    If you have ever tried to burn wood pellets you will know that there are two main problems/issues with them. The first is getting the things to light and the second is to get enough air in them so that they burn well.
    My aim was to find a way to burn wood pellets so that a concentrated flame is in the center of the stove and there is enough heat to cook cleanly with not having to add any additional fuel when cooking a meal.
    It only took me about twenty minutes to make the modification but about three hours to set everything up lol. This a big improvement on my first effort. If you have any ideas for improvements or would like to know how this was made then leave a comment and if there is enough interest I will make a follow up video on this. With your help we an all learn together and improve the concept.

    Excellent job. Really like your experimenting with adapting items that might otherwise be chucked into the recycling bin. I kept these coffee containers because they seemed useful but never got round to doing anything. I will take inspiration from your work and would appreciate a tutorial on how to build one. I also like the idea transporting the fuel inside the can. To stop them from falling out, could you perhaps use 2 of those old plastic caps from the old coffee cans.....placing one on each end of your fuel cell / gasifier.....keeping it in place with a strong rubber band?

      Thanks for the input. I also thought of the lid idea. On top fine but I’m struggling with the bottom one as the rim has been removed down below. Tutorial noted 👍

    I like this idea, so I might try making something similar, minus the £100 odd Firebox FreeStyle, despite hankering after that too.
    I have a small sack of pellets and coffee can and MSR Titan kettle.
    Favour maintaining the strength of the base, large hole centre, pepper base with small holes.
    On side, 4 horizontal rings of holes, cut from center of a top ( row 1) hole to center of, and off set to, hole row 3, and similarly 2 to 4 you could roll the cut edges over to add strength.
    Should be stronger than top to bottom.
    Really like your open central coil.
    As you recommend, less fuel
    Thanks again...
    Keep experimenting.

      I originally went for the drilled holes but the cans are so thin the metal tears and as my first attempt video showed it looked an an absolute mess. The slit idea came from a comment, the difficulty was finding a way to make the slits, luckily I own a tool that does it with ease. I believe the centre coil is a real game changer as it allows masses of air in the centre. Have been experimenting some more and will put up a video on how to make one at some point. Glad my ideas have inspired you. The pellets I use are the small ones from eco cat litter. The pellet mod should work in any Firebox style four sided stove so I am sure you have something suitable 👍

      @@InfoZhedExploreThanks for the warning re can thinness, a really deep throated hole clipper would do (if they made one).
      I have a couple if metal scribers so will try holemaking with that. As mainly a tea drinker I only have the 1 coffee can. Have G1 FireBox and a ti Bushbox LF plus windscreens.
      I will experiment thanks for your inspiration again, shall check out other vids, all helps to get you thinking.
      Good work
      Cheers
      Take care

      @@taber247 With thin metal drilling is near lmposslble. Put a slightly rounded block of wood inside to support the metal and punch holes with a thick wood nail or metal punch. Walter

    Pretty expensive experiment ( when You add the cost of the stove & windscreen )
    Looks like all You really need would be a #10 can for the windscreen and
    stove combo ( after You ventilate it )
    You could play around with it till You get Your burner just right . I think it
    would work pretty good .

    • @InfoZhedExplore

      The idea is that it would fit in any stove or appropriate surround as you rightly pointed out. With a cap on the top and bottom it becomes a wood fuel cell easily transportable, well that was the idea anyway. Thanks for the suggestions 👍

    Wawhiker did something similar but used a BioLite with a fan. Perhaps add a bellows or blow in a tube to add forced air?

    What was timer how long did it last

    • @InfoZhedExplore
      @InfoZhedExplore  Před 2 lety

      Well Mr Bond. I did not time it because it is still a work in progress. Am open to suggestions on how to improve the design. It is difficult to say how long because had a couple of attempts to light it. A ball park figure is 20 to 25 minutes. Will put out a build and timing video in the future when it has been refined a little more. Thinking of making a slightly longer version that will hold more pellets. Hope that explains the reasoning to you. Thanks for the question 👍

    Would a few drops of meths help with lighting it?

    👍been looking for something to concentrate my heat in my all camp stove like yours. What size is your foldable stove?. Mine is almost 5 inch by 4.

    • @InfoZhedExplore
      @InfoZhedExplore  Před rokem

      I used the firebox freestyle in that video. Check out Fireboxstove.com for all the specifications to get a good idea of size. There are many cheaper alternatives on Amazon and eBay. The pellet burning idea is a work in progress. Wood pellets need lots of air flow to burn nice and hot, so working on improving air flow and capacity plus a way to simplify the build process 👍

    Did you time the burn,how long did it go for? Great idea!

    • @InfoZhedExplore
      @InfoZhedExplore  Před 2 lety

      No did not time it. A rough estimate would be 20 minutes plus enough residual heat for an additional 10 minutes. I am still at the experimental stage and am open to improvement suggestions. Toying with the idea of making a shorter version for my Ghillie Kettle just to see if it is feasible. Glad you liked the idea 👍
