Most bands back in the 80s were just making bad covers sound even worse, these guys were creating magic in the form of music.
Yes, the timing is a little off, the lead sounds a little sloppy, the mix is bad and it’s still the best damn garage band tape that I’ve ever heard. Hearing all these guys in their rawest form is a rare occurrence, looking for something other than a great listen into the past is probably just a waste of time.

Been ages since I heard this. Ron's tone is actually very good, here, but his precision is way off, along with everybody else (of course, Lars is the other half of the rhythm section, so maybe Ron's the one who's actually on time). He actually does a really good job of recreating Colin Kimberly's bass sound on the original Diamond Head version. Used to get all this stuff on bootleg CD's as a 12-year-old in the 90's, meaning I knew almost nothing besides Metallica and that cassette of We Sold Our Souls For Rock N' Roll that my sister's stoner friend kicked down one day, and that I was not very popular, haha. The change in their sound on the Cliff's First Show bootleg (maybe actually his second or third show with them) was profound, and you can really hear their original sound as a band come together on that recording, which actually has somewhat decent audio. I was lucky to find a CD called The Metallic-Era way early on, so I actually heard the original versions of all their NWOBHM covers (and Killing Joke's The Wait and ANL's So What) before I heard Metallica's versions. There was so much mystique about bands like Diamond Head; I tried to find their stuff everywhere. I had no idea you could just ask the record store guy to order it for you, haha. Diamond Head's original of The Prince is awesome, was my favorite song for quite a while; never cared for Metallica's take on that one.
