Ron clearly came from a good family while James and Dave in particular did not...Lars was driven to be a rockstar (despite being a coddled mommas boy) so in that mix of teenagers no way Ron could hang long term. Those guys had nothing to lose (no real family so the band was their family).

Cliff’s family was very welcoming to the lifestyle and to the career path that Cliff chose, there’s even a video (RIP Ray Burton) where his father talks about letting him to do what he needs to do best and always supporting Cliff.

This was probably before Megadeth was founded. Dave hadn't found his new family in Megadeth so he probably was at the party cause he had nowhere else he belonged. Once he had his own gang in Megadeth and somewhere to feel at home, then he really started talkin shit about Metallica.

They were still teenagers. Ron was in the band in '81-'82. James, Lars, and Ron are all born in '63 so they would have been just 18 and 19 years old at the time. The odd one out among the early members was Dave being 2 years older.

LoL, if you guys think this is bad, Leon Wilkeson, the bass player for Lynyrd Skynyrd, was woken up in his bed on the tour bus by guitarist Ed King who was screaming that his throat had been cut. Wilkeson was bleeding profusely and rushed to the hospital. How his throat was cut remains a mystery to this day, and had King not discovered Wilkeson's condition, he likely would have bled to death in his sleep.
Man that's crazy. How he could've ever been comfortable on that tour bus ever again is beyond me. I've always thought Leon was underrated as a player btw

And - I'm telling you this as a natural fact - he would literally give you the shirt off his back. He gave away lots of Skynyrd stuff at concerts, back stage, at his house, on tour. If someone saw something at his home they liked, he'd literally give it to them. "You like that? You can have it." He was that nice of a person. If Bob Burns and Artimus Pyle were the heart beat of Lynyrd Skynyrd on drums, Leon Wilkeson was the blood flow, and he was very good at it. I've heard it said that Ed King wrote a lot of the early basslines in the studio. Dont know the truth of that, but at any rate Leon was definitely a force, and I dont think he got near enough credit.

I knew Ron and Cliff were on good terms with each other as Ron knew Cliff was the guy for Metallica, but I never knew about this party. I really do wonder particularly what James's relationship with Dave has been like over the years, because Dave has always looked up to James and James just seems to not be interested. But James doesn't always wear his heart on his sleeve.
James and Dave have talked afterwords but they didn't make it public. Mostly because of Cliff you know.. i think they finally really talked during the Justice days. I seen people mention in 89 or so. I think Dave did somthing to James when he was drunk. Maybe a fight went to far. But there not close like they should be.
I've never once had the impression or even heard anyone say that Mustaine looked up to Hetfield.
But, I wasn't around them, so I don't truly know

I am fed up to hear him whining "what? no warning, no second chance?" for the past 40 years, while he did have a second chance but did not give that second chance to his own bandmates in Megadeth. He will go down in history as both a great guitar player / songwriter and as the biggest whiner ever. Extremely talented musician, equally unlikeable person.

Rule number 1 for being in Metallica: You can't be closer to James than Lars.
Look at the 1st line-up, all 3 other members were closer to James than each other Lars wouldn't have it. It was later evident after Jason had left, when Pepper auditioned. James explained that they're too close and it would affect his relationship with Lars. Look at all the other members who have endured the band: Cliff, Jason, Rob, Kirk. They all occupied that middle ground. Basically Kirk was always paired with the bass player. It's just like Spinal Tap, "he's fire, he's ice, and I'm lukewarm water".

Hmm... I can understand why he holds a grudge though. A bit like another man/woman running off with your other half - rarely do you think positively towards that person.
Dave had a "good" reason to have a grudge- against Lars, Cliff and James. After all, they are the ones who kicked him and replaced him with Kirk. And the way they kicked him was... Horrible... But I think Dave just had too much fun, created too many good memories, and overall liked those guys so much that he misdirected his anger and grudge towards Kirk. Dave had good reasons for having a grudge and being bitter and angry, but he directed it towards the wrong person.
Ron said himself he didn't have much ambition. He just wanted to play in a garage band and have fun. I think that was a big part of why the band, in general, and Dave in particular, bullied him.
Keep in mind, they were 19 when they fired Dave. 19 year Olds aren't known for empathy and handling things well. The way that went down, I would have been salty, too, if I were Dave.

Didn't Dave throw Ron's shoes out of their truck on the ride back home from a gig one time? Maybe right after they got Cliff to join? I could've swore I read something about that back in the day. It's a bummer Ron got picked on, but hopefully his time in the band has been lucrative for him later on in life in some way, at least for interviews and stuff. I know Metallica really owe him a lot, from having a place to play to someone who was working hard for them behind the scenes in the early days, or just a bass player who was into the same music, really. Power metal!

I see comments on other videos bitching about how "badly" Metallica treated Jason Newsted, as if they didn't give him the chance of a lifetime, becoming a world renowned rock star and a millionaire many times over, but "oooooh they turned his bass down on 1 album!!"
Meanwhile, Ron Mcgovney gets treated like shit, doesn't get paid for it, and then gets booted from the band before they strike gold, leaving him as merely a footnote on the wikepedia page of one of the largest bands in the world. Ron is OG bassist and i take my hat off to him. cheers, Sir.
Also, Jason angered his former bandmates when he left Flotsam and Jetsam. I like Jason but his former band was having a decent amount of success and I don't blame them for feeling betrayed (plus Newsted was basically the band manager and he left on such short notice that he basically handed a pile of legal and bank documents to the Flots guys and said "you're on your own now".

It's known that James & Lars are very much control freaks.
Sometimes I wonder how things would have been if Dave got along with the dudes in the band and had never been fired.
His crazy ADD style of playing certainly would have made some songs more interesting. With that being said, Metallica as a band wouldn't have reached the level of success they're at right now. But two vocalists? Far out.

I recall there being some Metallica fan website years ago, and in the bio section for past members, Ron’s was this really sour rant that looked like a fanboy wrote it. I wonder what that was all about.
It almost seems like a raw deal for the bassists in this band? Ron was a young kid,,they all were, but had his crap together, & with the other guys all fuckd up with drugs & alcohol, they booted Ron, yet, if that never were to happen, then we never would've gotten Cliff!!? Then along came Jason not shortly thereafter, taking over for a Bass God in Cliff, & from day one, Lars & James' ego never had him on equal footing!!
If i had to guess who stole the bass I'd put my money on Dave 😄

Dave was never the problem. Megadeth proved that he could handle being in a band. The problem has always been that Metallica was just full of assholes
Dave's hardly a saint either lol, there have been literally dozens of people in Megadeth over the years and Mustaine is notoriously hard to work with. It's not really proof that he can handle being in a band when it's his band and he gets to make all the decisions.

James and Lars were the assholes. Dave was just someone who couldn't tolerate assholes for very long before he needed to beat them at their own game.
I used to jam with two pricks like that. Very passive-aggressive, they'd push your buttons any way they could without actually giving you a good reason to beat their asses, and then they'd act like you're the bad guy when you gave them the treatment they earned, but in a direct manner.
All those years of bullshit Jason Newsted had to put up with from James and Lars proved in retrospect that Dave was never really the problem. Dave was just giving James and Lars the treatment they'd earned from him.
