    I thought that the general reason for Tiny 10/11 was to enable things to run more smoothly on lower end systems, especially those with small amounts of RAM. So for me, this gaming test was not really in the right ballpark to begin with.

      Exactly! If you have 8 or even on some games 16Gb of ram, then you will see the difference but especially at the 8Gb mark. Also the cpu matters if you have the low clock speeds under 2.4Ghtz or a lower core count like 4 but with any modern cpu made in the last 5 years this shouldn’t be an issue. Mainly the ram

    The benefit of de-bloating is in reducing memory and disk space. the reduced cache would also mean less swapping/disk usage to load those apps when they wake up And, perhaps more usefully, reduced downloads for updates of now-not-installed apps. The latter is why I am using it to build a system for someone who is on satelite internet.

    With the processing power and speeds we got today, finding any practical differences is probably next to impossible. Turn back the clock to when terminating a bloat process made an immediate noticable difference, debloat made a heck of a difference. These days, I think the shift needs to be more concerned with keeping telemetry and privacy robbing bloat from running in the background.

      Indde. Back in the days I made a tiny ME. It occupied 268 Mb instead of 600 and something. That made a huge difference on lower end PC's, but not so much on higher end. That still is the rule today. If a game is optimized to use 4 GB of RAM, it doesn't matter if you run a comparison on a system with 16 GB e.g. Your OS using 4 or 2 would not make a diffenrence on the high end system but would make a difference if you only have 4 GB to begin with.

Additionally, I am fairly certain that the number of running processes is dramatically lower on Tiny 11 upon initial install.

I replaced the OS on the Celeron with unbloated Win 11 (X-Lite), and it (so far) is running much better. Do you think Windows 11 is a one-size-fits-all-CPUs system?

  • @fxeconomist
    @fxeconomist Před rokem

    I think the catch for Tiny 11 is the lower install size - if you use a 64 GB-ish partition which you are backing up on a flash drive. I have a dual Windows 10 system. The initial idea was to have a Windows Online and a Windows Offline, I ended up using them both online, but the "Offline" has a Steam with a Steam library that has the single player offline games. There is a huge pressure on this partition, because that's where the saves are. And I'm planning to keep this the same way even when I'll upgrade the SSD drive, prior to the release of Starfield.

  • @TempleKa
    @TempleKa Před rokem +12

    I doubt there will ever be much difference between a fresh stock Windows install and a debloated one in games. What I believe would be noticeable is a difference in daily tasks, especially on older hardware with less RAM, or older/cheaper laptops that some just use to browse the web, watch a movie, CZcams and so on. So just opening/loading a browser or an extra tab and watching a YT video would be much better on a debloated system that has like 4GB-8GB of RAM and a slower CPU.

    • @root4-all
      @root4-all Před rokem +1

      Windows efficiently utilizes available RAM based on your system's capacity. It's very good with RAM management, automatically reallocating resources when required by other programs.
      The RAM utilized by Windows is not due to unnecessary overhead or "bloat"; rather, it intelligently caches frequently used programs, ensuring faster access and responsiveness when opening them.

    • @themadmallard
      @themadmallard Před rokem

      @@root4-all except it doesnt as much as you might think. Its just we have SSDs now which hide this thrashing of the system constantly at work compared to mechanical drives you can hear as they work.

    • @root4-all
      @root4-all Před rokem

      @@themadmallard I did not intend to imply that Windows RAM management works wonders. My intention was simply to clarify that the utilization of RAM is a feature of Windows (and a good one) and not a flaw.
      Furthermore, I find your use of the term "thrashing" quite vague and misleading. What constitutes as "trashing?" Even attempting to comprehend the operations of computers in the 90s can be overwhelming. Compatibility aside, imagine trying to run an OS from the 90's on a computer from the 80's and one would be hard pressed to say the computer isn't getting thrashed. You see, it is all relative. Modern computers are significantly more advanced than their predecessors, and they are designed to handle the demands placed upon them by both end users and the Windows operating system. Therefore, while Windows RAM management may not be as sophisticated as some may believe, it ultimately does not matter because it fulfills its purpose effectively.

    I concur with your conclusion. I created a Tiny11 image a few days ago but haven't installed it yet. I plan to put it on my Surface Pro 7 (Core i5 1035G4, 8GB of RAM, 128GB storage). The extra 10GB of storage on the NVMe would be nice. I also frequently fill up the RAM. Between Windows itself, 3ish GB going to the Iris G4 GPU, and memory hogs like Chrome/Edge, it's hard to keep enough RAM open for any real multitasking. I do use some stock Windows features that Tiny11 removes so I'll have to add those back, but I expect to see an improvement regardless. Maybe this week I'll test it - after my important meetings, just in case the install goes pear shaped.

      @ShadeAssault Před rokem

      @@hellaboredfs It worked pretty well! I did have to add the Xbox App back as I use GamePass Ultimate for their cloud gaming when I am out of the house. I have also since gotten a mini PC (Think Intel NUC) for my living room and it came with 8GB of RAM. What I have ultimately decided is 8GB of RAM simply is not enough for W11 (And likely modern PCs). Tiny11 is just a stopgap solution. If you are looking at a Surface, make sure to order one with 16GB+ of RAM, as it's not user upgradable. Also, if you buy an older one, don't get the 7, get the 7+ or higher, they have an M.2 slot that you can add a drive to instead of just microSD (Double check that for the specific model before you buy).
      I love the Surface form factor, but I think I am going to be upgrading to an ASUS ROG Flow Z13 (Specifically the Z13, not the X13, X13 is one of those flippy laptop things. They're often different SKUs on the same product page). Same tablet + detachable keyboard form factor on the Z13 but can get a model with a RTX3050 for light gaming. And it has active cooling. Price is a bit steep though.

    Yeah I agree with you later in the video, you need to do these tests on a lower end or older system. Something that would struggle getting say 60FPS in SoTTR @1080p. Then the extra resources being freed up might actually make a difference. As a bonus SoTTR runs really well in Linux too should you want to compare it to a 'light' distro too.
    I'm Thinking the following or similar:
    i5 3570k Stock
    8GB DDR3
    GTX 1060 3GB / 6GB Stock
    HDD for the game and OS
    If you have 32GB of RAM and you free up a few GB using Tiny11 it wont mean much in day to day usage.
    If you are running an SSD with high bandwidth then eliminating a few background processes that taxes the drive won't make much of a difference either.
    If you are thinking of Tiny 11 for performance purposes as opposed to just getting rid of annoying bloat, then older or lower end systems would be the only ones to benefit.

    If tiny basically frees up memory, wouldn't the biggest gains be on systems either with lower memory (e.g 8 - 16 gb), a cluttered hdd, or both? I feel like windows tiny is more likely to effect how quickly a game/program will load, rather than how fast it will run (since ultimately that would be hard ware dependent). It might also give performance boosts in more loaded scenarios, e.g. alt-tabbing in and out with a bunch of browser windows open.

AtlasOS can be installed on the latest version of Windows 10 so you're not missing out on security updates at this very moment and by the time another is necessary AtlasOS would have already pushed 0.3 which restores Windows Updates among other things. Really the only thing you're missing out on atm is Windows Defender but anyone with half a brain is safe without it.

      @@CyberCPU Even if debloating doesn't make a lot of difference. The main thing is I don't want unnecessary services and processes running in the background. Also don't want Microsoft spyware crap running in the background either. Things like Windows Defender, Windows Store and Cortana are completely removed off my system. Also have annoying user account control disabled as well. Don't like any annoying features by Microsoft on my pc. I will not use Microsoft edge either. Because it's basically a remake of Internet Explorer. I use Brave Nightly 64 bit browser instead. I like to be in full control on what goes on my pc and what doesn't. By the way I don't use regular Windows 10 at all because of the bloat that comes with security updates and feature updates. The only version of Windows I will ever use is Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2019. Plus you get much longer security update support vs the regular version which most of the sheep like masses use. There's an old saying successful people don't do what the masses are doing.

    Debloating significantly helps some old systems 2010-2017 era, and low ram/cpu cores, and especially it helps with HDD.
    I have some old Intel Celeron 2 cores 2GHz, and 8Gigs of ddr3 + HDD as the system drive.
    Without debloating the system is literally not usable even for browsing/text entry. But with debloat it become almost as fast as the 5GHz systems (minus the launch speed obviously because of HDD).

    You have too much ram and too high end of a cpu to see the difference. Drop down to 8Gb and test that on tiny vs regular, then do a test at 16Gb and then finish off with the 32Gb. What you’ll see the difference is mainly in ram amount and speed/cache and not just a “wow tiny 11 is great”.

      Even still, on a modern gaming system, the boat in windows is barely a blip on system utilization. I like to de-bloat on principle, but all the people running latest gen Ryzen or Intel systems on a super fast SSD's are deluding themselves that they're going to get some kind of major performance uplift.

    WOW those are results I would not have expected. This just goes to show that the OS doesn't have the effect you would think. I guess I don't need to see in a cpu bound system. From these results I can't see that it will make any difference in a cpu bound system either.

      This guy is testing games which are story based and on 4k and on high end system which doesn't really affected by debloating.
      When you test on budget systems on 1080p resolution with some serious competitive games like apex, valorant you'll get to know how these debloated system have huge improvement in game stability almost no stuttering good 0.1% fps and what not.

    What if you just bought a used gaming laptop that’s a few years old so you can play with your GF at her house? Would debloating a model that’s a few years old help it? It runs pretty slow and the load times are atrocious. It does play the game I want it to, but starting up, and getting the game to load, or just doing normal things on the laptop is pretty bad.
