My Husband n i got married in 2010, we had been together for 4 years... we were young n broke so we just went to the courthouse... 2015 on Christmas Eve he told me there was a gift for me in the tree under the topper so totally unexpected i get up there n its a ring n i turn around n hes on one knee asking me to renew our vows so that he could give me the wedding of my dreams with the dress he envisions me in... We've been together 11 years now so it just, omg, so amazing! im hoping we can save enough to do this lol it may take 5 years but we will do it right this time!

Amanda Clark How sweet! Love this. Marriage isn't my thing. My man and I have been together forever but I've never wanted to get married... It will be 11 years on April fools but we have known each other for 17 years with is such a crazy thought to me. We met when we were eleven. Anyway... I'm just rambling now... Hahaha. I just wanted to say congratulations and I think that's really special. We don't know many people that have been together as long as we have so I know what it means to be with someone for so long and still love them to pieces and not be able to picture yourself with anyone else. He proposed about 10 years ago and I told him I wouldn't marry him until we had been together at least 10 years... So who knows maybe I will come around eventually hahah!

Tati, I eloped with my husband and to be honest, I had major reasons for it but at times I wish we hadn't. It isn't often, but I do sometimes. I had lost my Dad and was so worried that if I had a big wedding, I would only miss him more. I still really missed him, but with everyone else gone, it wasn't as sharp of an absence. My husband had never met him, but you do what you have to do. My brothers were PISSED at me. I didn't know that my oldest brother was absolutely banking on walking me down the aisle. I am the only girl too, so I was his only shot(plus he'll never have kids). It was a good decision, but man, sometimes I think that maybe I should have done a big wedding(even though it clearly isn't my thing). I did take my Dad's wings from flying and pinned them on my dress. That was the closest I could get to having him there. I did something very similar. There was no formal proposal but we had discussed everything. One day, on a Monday, I told my husband that I was going to look for a dress that day and if I found one that fit, we were getting married that Saturday. Well, that's exactly what happened. Congrats!
Don't ever think you needed to have a big wedding. Those things are bad luck, and you'll never make anyone happy with a big wedding. I've seen other people do a big wedding and it amplified everything, especially the pettiness of some family members. And the debt really messed with their families. Your brothers really shouldn't be putting their feelings on you. It's your day! They aren't marrying your husband. They aren't making the commitment. They aren't gonna pay for the wedding! They can take a few seats and get over it.
I know how it's like to loose your Dad, I've been through it. And trust me, big wedding would have been very sad. I had a very small wedding, just a couple of relatives and friends and it still was a lot of crying.
subatomiclaura ya. They have definitely gotten over it. They love my husband so much anyway, and frankly, they should have known that I don't do ANYTHING like someone else wants. It would have been payed for. I didn't know that my brothers were pooling their money together but they gave it to us as a gift. We have been married now for almost 11 years, and we'll stay that way until I die(I say that, but I have been resuscitated 2 times already). Looking back, I wouldn't change it one bit, but every once in a while, I guess I wish I could have that.....but I didn't have my Pops, so that wouldn't have ever happened anyway.
Lady Lynx I totally agree. I didn't cry about it until I was putting his wings on my dress and my husband had just decided to walk me to the podium instead of waiting there for me.
My boyfriend and I will have been together for 9 years this summer and we're thinking about eloping. My dad passed away 25 years ago and my stepdad (who was really important to me) passed away 1,5 years ago. Plus there are people in both our familys who don't get along very well with people so it just feels like it would be a disaster to have a even a small wedding with just family. It's kind of sad because I used to have dreams about my wedding day and being a bride, but still I tink it will be kind of sweet with just him and me and maybe travel somewere afterwards... I hope it will be good. One of my sisters have told me she will be very pissed if we elope and she doesn't get to be there when we get married, but I feel like that's her problem.

We were together for 8 years and engaged 4 years, almost 5 years, before we finally got married November 2015. The time does go by very fast lol When it's the right time it's the right time, doesn't matter how long it takes to get there. Congrats and many blessings to you both 💖
Btw, we lost my husband's best friend who introduced us in the years before our wedding and about 5 weeks before our wedding we lost my husband's mother. It was a trying time but we made it through together and that's all that counts.

Lauren Carter my husband and I got married two years ago and we lost his mother and my father a couple months before hand. they died a couple weeks apart. then after our wedding his best man ( the man who introduced us & one of our best friends) passed away as well so I know how hard that can be. to everyone out there that had lost someone, especially a father before their wedding I'm sorry for you because it's hard not to have your daddy there on your big day walking you down the isle. losing anyone is hard but that's what makes couples stronger, when you have each others backs through anything and everything.
