  • The violin is by Jules Remy of Paris, 1830. He was the son of another maker, also called Jules Remy, who taught him. The violin must have crossed the Atlantic at some point in the 19th. century because it bears a repair label dated 1904 from Joseph Tarr, formerly of Manchester, who moved to New York and set up business there. His family, his father and brothers, that is, made string instruments, and were best known for their double basses. The damage was significant, but the repair is very good and the instrument plays well.
